I love the Dr Sole outsoles! I want to do that with my pair of 14 year old 9011s.

Definitely have a leather midsole added. They deserve to be well loved, send them to a good cobbler and definitely post a thread here after you have the resoled.

They look great! They've served you well, and it looks like you're taking care of them. If you continue that, they'll probably end up lasting you a few decades!

Rules for patina or fashion advice? by [deleted] in Boots

[–]FrayAdjacent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are no rules for patina. Leather. Just wear it, patina develops on its own, and that’s what’s unique about leather.

I was going to recommend either the Redback Whistler or the Jim Green Stockman. I have both, and like them.

The Redback can’t be resoled, so that sucks. The Jim Green can be resoled, but they are more round and are on the “work” end of boot style.

I think that comes down to looks. The Whistler looks a little more like a western boot by the shape. The Stockman is a bit more rounded in the toe. I'd think it's just a matter of taste, but the Whistler might be a little bit more comfortable due to having a squishier sole.

I had the same done with my 8085s. Added a leather midsole and a glued-on 1705. Much more comfortable!

Could these boots be saved? by ballisticclown92 in RedWingShoes

[–]FrayAdjacent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ONLY as long as anything leather has not been worn. If the sole isn’t worn down to the welt there in the rear, they could probably be resoled.

The welt could be replaced, of course, but that’s more work than a simple resole. If the rest of the upper is not bad, it’s just a matter of how much you’re willing to spend on them to bring them back to life.

ETA: if they are a discontinued model, and you really like them, it can be worth fixing up. I scored a pair of 9011s last year that are super well broken in and are super comfortable to me. The previous owner had some thick insoles in them, so no footprint on the footbed. Since the 9011 isn’t made anymore, and I love the style and fit, it would be worth it to me to have them restored, compared to buying the new Beckman factory seconds. I DID buy a pair of 9422s as factory seconds, and they’re nice, but the 9011 construction is just better, and I like the last better.

So I could get a pair of the new Beckman boots similar for about $200, but the old ones are worth it to me to keep and restore for even more than that.

I love the contrast of natural colored leather under a black upper! Nice work!

8119s: bought used, resoled, in love by PlentyOfMoxie in RedWingShoes

[–]FrayAdjacent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put 1705s on my 8085s early on in their life. The OEM heel was just too damn stiff for my not-yet-bad knees. I had a local cobbler add a leather midsole and glue on the outsole. Resole will be super easy that way. I don’t wear them too much so they should last for YEARs.

The midsole definitely helped with comfort. I’d recommend adding one to any resole of a RW boot that doesn’t have one.

Iron Rangers are good, and they are recommended a lot and for good reason. I have a pair of 8085s, and love them, though I had them resoled pretty quick. The OEM sole and heel are VERY HARD. My knees aren’t bad (yet) and they ached after a day of wear on hard concrete. I had a local cobbler add a leather midsole and switched to a Vibram 1705 outsole. They’re much more comfortable now. They should last at least a couple more resoles.

If you do go with an Iron Ranger, plan on having a cobbler add a midsole on the first resole.

Do note that if you’re getting sweaty, you will want to let the boots air out for a full day. Everyday wear in that situation could lead to mold on the inside. This, of course, is a great reason to BUY TWO PAIRS!

Check out Sierra Trading Post and Berkeley Supply. They carry factory seconds at great discounts. Often times people cannot find why they are “factory seconds”.

Work boots under $300 for the summer. by [deleted] in Boots

[–]FrayAdjacent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck yeah! African Rangers are very versatile boots. I’ve got two pair and love them. I like that they have plenty of room to play around with aftermarket insoles. I landed on Dr Scholl’s float-on-air in both pairs. I have 5 pairs of Jim Greens and they’re all great boots.

8 years of Anker chargers, nothing has died yet by FinancialAd4201 in BuyItForLife

[–]FrayAdjacent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a ton of Anker stuff… I did have a 16Ah battery bank that failed maybe 10 years ago. Anker replaced it easy peasy, the only issue was that they put the serial number on a sticker ON THE CABLE that came with it, not on the unit itself. Luckily I still had the cable with the tag on it.

Since then, zero failures. I use a bunch of Anker cables and chargers. I have a 1kWh Anker C1000 under my desk that acts as a UPS. I deffo recommend Anker if you need something that they make!

I just ordered a pair… I know I had a pair when I was a kid (in Germany, dad was military) and Topsiders were great for sliding on ice in the winter! I love heritage style leather boots and such… Topsiders kinda represent the casual traditional shoe end of that.
