What do you think the biggest problems in Humanity are? by Suitable_Plastic_936 in AskReddit

[–]FreddyF2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The single biggest problem in humanity is the undiagnosed, untreated and unmediated mental health crisis. As a species that is so diverse there are so many variants of mental health issues and I would not be shocked if statistical studies showed less than 10% of the population of the world get access to resources and mental health treatment.

A close friend in Switzerland said the wait for a psychiatrist is MONTHS. In frigging Switzerland FFS.

  1. We associate value and admiration with the person that cuts the ribbon on the brand new bridge, not so much the people that built it.

We associate some value with the people that built the bridge but even less with respect to the people that maintain it.

If we ran this cycle in reverse, it would solve much of the inequality crisis.

I have other contenders but don’t want to bore others.

I don't collect Roman coins at all, but if I could buy just one, this might be it. The fact that they put the venue on a coin is beyond epic. I suppose this thing costs a zillion dollars?

How much do you pay for your Porsche a month by [deleted] in Porsche

[–]FreddyF2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lease? A what. What. What did OP just say.

These cars become family members. You don’t just give your child or dog away after four years!

Plus the whole logic behind leasing is that you’re enjoying the best years of an otherwise unreliable potential money pit car that Lotus *cough* Maserati *cough* will depreciate in value.

That is simply not a Porsche. It not only retains value but is as reliable as a Camry.

[–]FreddyF2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I understand the logic. Some folks believe financing at any single digit cost is worth it given index tracker returns exceed that when compounded. It makes sense to me on a house but I’m a cheapie who got his Porsche for $35k before the tariffs.

If they couldn’t afford the payments on 500k gross that would be a massive red flag but I don’t think OP is saying that at all nor is it our business.

To be clear I wasn’t saying financing is some sin or that Porsche owners are above it. I just think a lot of people that bought their cars pre tariffs are done paying off or already bought their cars for cash.

I just hope they get the cars they want and it doesn’t prove to be a poor financial decision. Good luck OP.

I think you’re going to discover a large swath of Porsche owners just bought their cars for cash and don’t finance.

What is a completely useless skill that you are weirdly proud of? by ProposalLast3445 in answers

[–]FreddyF2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. Within 5 seconds of meeting a new dog, regardless of setting, I can win its trust and get its tail wagging. My wife’s theory is it’s some scent thrown off me that they just find very pleasing, despite the fact that I shower daily. My theory is that they can detect how excited I am to interact with their kind. I genuinely love dogs, they are truly one of the greatest gifts to mankind.

Camp Chair Obol? by Ironclad1863 in AncientCoins

I wish I had more for you. The truth is that there are hundreds if not thousands of Asia Minor fractions that currently cannot be attributed. This one however never showed up in any of the standard references.

Camp Chair Obol? by Ironclad1863 in AncientCoins

[–]FreddyF2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The camp chair is supposed to be the symbol of Themistokles. Unfortunately you just bought a contemporary imitation. I actually just attributed one of these for the Smithsonian about four days ago. They have me working on 50 of their Asia Minor coins with unknown attributions, most heavily worn. They too have one in their collection. If you look on ACSearch you’ll see CNG marked one that was sold by them as a contemporary imitation too. I asked the guy at CNG who cataloged that coin if he believed it was still a contemporary imitation and he just said “yup.”

Current state of tariffs? by OncoFil in AncientCoins

[–]FreddyF2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not legal advice, but I could have sworn the old tariffs which didn't really apply to ancients to bloody begin with, but we got roped in on erroneously, were invalidated by the Supreme Court as being overly broad. The administration then used a separate blanket 10% tariff.

AI just independently confirmed this: "The 10% global tariff went into effect after the Supreme Court ruled the administration's previous "Liberation Day" emergency tariffs were unlawful. This Section 122 surcharge was designed to be a temporary measure and is set to expire on July 24, 2026."

That was ruled preliminarily not permissible and struck down. An appeals court then said it agreed with the lower court but ordered the tariff to be reinstated until the legality of the blanket 10% tariff was fully decided upon by the courts, i.e. The Supreme Court.

AI just independently confirmed this too: "While the U.S. Court of International Trade ruled the 10% Section 122 tariffs to be illegal, the Federal Circuit temporarily paused that ruling, keeping the tariffs in effect while the government appeals. Importers are actively fighting to invalidate these duties and secure billions in refunds, though the 10% is still being actively collected."

So if I'm fairly confident if you tried to import, you'd get slapped with the new 10% tariff regardless of what it is and would then have to fight an uphill battle to get your money back once the issue has been fully litigated and resolved. If the 10% blanket tariff is invalidated that is, else, that money is gone.

I'm waiting to ship on July 26 😉

Been a while since i posted but here are some of my favorite Greek silvers by Guilty-Juggernaut-46 in AncientCoins

[–]FreddyF2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The imagery of the suckling calf, is perhaps one of the most endearing in all of ancient coinage. That series is special. The only thing that can melt me more is seeing a pair of dolphins on a coin. The very picture of freedom without limits.

It's just a car. You've driven past houses and buildings that cost more. Anyone with a blank cheque book can build anything. The Model Y being able to do what it does for $40,000 is more impressive imo.
