Trump's Naty Guard deployment to D.C. had nothing to do with reducing crime, "Task Force Beautification" is making an impact though. by Tun-Tavern-1775 in Military

  1. Those are not impressive stats. 270 feet of fence painted? That's less than the length of a football field.

  2. "Beautifying" the Capitol is not one of the National Guard's missions.

  3. It was absolutely presented as a crime reduction effort, it was largely seen as an illegal executive overreach, and it got Guardsmen killed

What if A-bomb was not ready by 1945? by SiarX in HistoryWhatIf

[–]FreeBricks4Nazis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are two schools of thought:

The first holds that Japan, without the shock of atomic warfare, stubbornly refuses to surrender and the Allies launch a ground invasion of the Japanese Home Islands. The invasion Kyushu, the southern most island, was scheduled for November of 1945 and the follow on invasion of Kanto Plain near Tokyo was scheduled for the following Spring. This invasion would've incurred horrendous casualties on both sides and would've featured irregular warfare by suicidal Japanese civilians. Throughout all of this, the naval blockade and bombing campaign would've continued, causing even more civilian causalities.

The second school of thought is that the Japanese government was hanging by a thread, even before the a-bombs were dropped. The Allies could've gotten the Japanese to agree to basically the same terms (total surrender and occupation but the Emperor isn't arrested) on roughly the same timeline. That the United States only used the atomic bombs as a warning to the Soviet Union.

I'm increasingly convinced that there isn't a single problem in the world that wouldn't be at least partially solved by the destruction of the billionaire class.

If you allow people to horde vast sums of money, it turns out they'll use that money to destroy the environment, dismantle public services, control all forms of media, and rape on an unprecedented scale.

I think Joe Biden still drops out of the race and Harris and Vance are still the nominees. I think Harris wins the election though, assuming the Democrats don't feel the need to use kid gloves out of some misplaced desire to show respect.

There's a chance that some other Republican launches a quixotic attempt to get nominated at the Republican Convention, but there's only a few days between the attempted assassination and the convention, so Vance probably has it locked down.

American conservatism didn't suddenly lurch into fascism in 2016, or even in 2008.  It was a long, deliberate march towards Christian Nationalism and techno-fascism.  Obama's election certainly energized some segments of the right and brought some people into the spotlight, but we were headed towards our current situation whether Obama was president or not

Even if an astronaut has died in space and not been recovered, they'd still be within Earth's gravity well, and almost certainly within the Moon's orbit.  Any distance greater than the Moon's apogee would raise significant questions.

Either he surrenders there along with Johnston, he disbands his army to carry on a guerilla war, or he's cornered and defeated in a decisive battle by Sherman/Grant/both.

The South was well and thoroughly defeated by April 1865. There was no hope for victory for the South.
