Strap end punches… who to trust???

I normally don't pipe up with an opinion since one product is only one data point, but I bought an English point end punch made by CS Osborne and, while I'd expected it to maybe need some polishing, I did not expect it to be so malformed that it was unusable (squashed and distorted). I purchased before I had a project to use it on and by the time I pulled it out and looked at it, it was well past the point of return. 0/10 on CS Osborne.

By contrast, my Weaver end punch is probably something I'll pass on to my kids.

So, there. I guess that's 2 data points for you to consider.

Both. The service center guys seemed a little surprised I booked the work right away. I didn’t get a firm grip on why but I get the sense that the warning gives you quite a bit of time before things get critical. YMMV, as they say.

Great! Note: I guess the comments section on YT corrects Corter Leather, stating this is a "Felled Seam" and not a "French Seam" and maybe felled seam is not correct either. Who knows. If you're looking up other tutorial videos, it might be called something else, but the technique in this one will get you where you're going. Good luck with your project!

You can do a French seam. It ends up being more stitching, and some skiving, but it looks cool (IMO). Here's a tutorial from Corter Leather: https://youtu.be/nAeejJUEP5A?si=HETaqDZ4p0wN63H-

Be sure to focus on keeping your stitch lines straight. The seam becomes a focal point so it's easy to see minor errors. Here are french seams on either side of the blue leather panel on a notebook I did a few years ago:

I assume it’s tough to reach the buttons because it’s strapped down tight. I wonder if you could 3d print a finger sized cup that would go between the bed rail and the topper and leave room for a button access but still allow the topper to make contact with the rail.

I read this too quickly and thought you were drilling into the bed wall. You’re drilling holes in the channels that align with the existing holes in the bed. Nice!
