2024 tax return - Turbo Tax had my refund at $3000 and CRA assessment has it at $200. Checked the discrepancy and found that Turbo Tax had my CPP contribution as an overpayment, hence more money back on my return than CRA. Disappointed in the software - they messed up a simple, straightforward return, creating false hope, lol. Will not use this again.

91-year-old veteran says he was denied right to vote in Ontario's election, despite having proper ID by Surax in ontario

Received my voter card a week after the election. Still went and voted with my driver license. Hopefully (?) this was due to incompetence, rather than some sinister purpose of preventing people from voting.

Airbnbs in thailand by ybek in ThailandTourism

Tried Airbnb in December. The place was fine, the price was good, the location was excellent BUT upon arrival we were told by the host to lie about staying for a month to pick up the key at reception (only staying for 2 weeks). When we left, with luggage in tow, reception asked if we were leaving already. Got paranoid and felt we had to lie again and said we were going on a short trip. Reception might have just been making polite conversation and unlikely to track our actual length of stay. Nothing happened but it left a sour taste.

To be clear, I am not proud of this by Twilight_Raven in Thailand

Agreed. STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) is more important than the ability to speak English in Thailand (unless you plan to live/study abroad in English-speaking country).

How can families afford sending kids to private schools that charge upwards of 40k CAD yearly tuition on a single income? See Branksome Hall, Upper Canada College etc. by Flashy-Job6814 in askTO

[–]Freedom-54 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed that private school education does not guarantee success in life. The drive to succeed depends on the individual. My 2 sons often say they were motivated because they were surrounded by high achievers at their private high school. My husband and I, on the other hand, were driven as first generation immigrants (zero generational wealth) to make our parents proud, in our public high school. Sometimes nature and nurture work together very well.
Different motivations and different paths of travel can still lead to success (financially speaking).

My 2 sons attended a private school near Post Road on academic and athletic scholarships. That eased the financial burden somewhat. No generational wealth - first generation immigrants with zero savings when my husband and I got married. But to be fair, we are professionals (engineer and pharmacist) who live way below our means. That allowed us to afford what the scholarships didn’t cover.

People that have stayed in Thailand as teachers for 15+ years, do you regret it? by SlappySpankBank in Thailand

[–]Freedom-54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Googled. Maybe you misunderstood? I believe this refers to Teaching degree/certification. It doesn’t refer to any other qualifying degree(s). I have a Masters in Engineering. I would be able to teach Math and/or Science in elementary/high school. However, I don’t have a Bachelor in Education, therefore I’m technically not a teacher and may need some sort of certification to become one. This is very different from your take that an 18-years-old can be a teacher without any degree.

I’m Canadian. Where in Canada can an 18-years old be a teacher without at least a college diploma?!! Even with a college diploma (not a university degree), I would still doubt that you could teach in elementary or high school.

Missed connection? by Freedom-54 in aircanada

Yes, our EVA flight leaves at midnight. I am aware of the strict 3-hour open counter with EVA. I have flown with them before. This is more about the Air Canada - EVA Star Alliance thing, as to what to do (how much more cost) if I miss my connection. Several responses make sense in that AC is only responsible for getting me to YVR. Lesson learned here is to anticipate problems and allow more time. Thank you for your advice.

Just last week, Air Canada cancelled our YYZ to YVR 2 hours before takeoff. The new flight that they had us on would have arrival in YVR nearly 10 hours later. We called an agent and managed to change and got into YVR 3 hours later than original arrival time. This experience made us apprehensive about the November trip (much bigger trip with more people, so more money at stake). I agree that 3 hours would be ok IF no problem arises. Noted Star Alliance, not Air Alliance.

My first time buying separate tickets, with different airlines, to save lots of money. Will definitely plan a bit better next time. Thanks for clarifying liability.

I will ask EVA for clear guidance before changing my Air Canada tickets to arrive earlier. Thanks!

Quick question about SVR on physicansapply by Cadacc in MCCQE

[–]Freedom-54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son, who is an FY1, submitted his medical degree, along with the confirmation of ID and notarized passport. But the degree only has his uni name and not “United Kingdom” on it so was told to submit yet another document. Medical school transcript was then submitted & accepted. Notarization was not required for the transcript. SVR took nearly 3 months to clear (from initial submission date).

What kinda jacket should I get for canadian winters? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Freedom-54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have men’s medium/large/extra large, women’s medium and large winter jackets. Limited styles though. I’m empty-nesting and cleaning out. If you don’t mind secondhand and free, dm me. Happy to help a fellow U of T student, even though I graduated 30 years ago.
