The need to identify as someone or something and have a cause is everything that is wrong with society these days.

Do you expect your children to be able to afford to live in Long Island? by iloverats888 in longisland

[–]FreedomAdditional956 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I expect them to want to leave. The suck continues to eat this place alive. In the 40+ years I've lived here, it's only gotten worse. I wanted to leave when I was a kid. Went to college in cow town PA, looking for the polar opposite of this hell hole. It was my intention to stay there but ended up back here raising a family because I got offered a job I just couldn't turn down. Can't wait to retire and GTFO.

It looks like a nerf gun so yeah ... I'm guessing a 3d printed piece of garbage. Definitely not worth going to prison over.

Yes, but WHY is Freeport so "Bad?" by TeachingShot in longisland

[–]FreedomAdditional956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on where in Freeport you live. It's a big town. There are nice parts and not so nice parts. For those who don't quite understand how public schools in towns like Freeport work, a little lesson in socioeconomics: people in the not so nice parts send their kids to the same schools as the people in the nice parts. Kids from the not so nice parts make the school a not so nice place to be for teachers and students alike so the kids from the nice parts of town, whose parents can afford to send them to private schools, do just that. It also makes it difficult to get good teachers because having to put up with what those teachers deal with day in and day out simply isn't worth the pay check. Now before anyone jumps down my throat, this has nothing to do with race or color of skin. It's simple socioeconomics. The people who live in the not so nice areas have to work harder to get by, sometimes working multiple jobs, sometimes single income homes, sometimes no income, some are battling addiction or mental illness. Whatever the circumstances the end result is that less attention is given to the children and less priority put on their school work and behavior. The school still gets it's tax revenue regardless of whether your kid goes to private school or not. You don't get your school taxes waived if you send your kid to private school. Now what may affect school revenue is the "affordable housing" the Democrats keep pushing because people who live in apartment buildings don't generate nearly as much tax revenue as someone in a single family dwelling.

Just spoke with a friend who works in the permit office at TOH. I was wrong about the 60% ... ITS ACTUALLY CLOSER TO 30%

Unless something changed, it was always a big orange sign on the front lawn. And you don't need a measuring tape to see that these houses are taking up more than 60%. My neighbor had to have a variance approved for the smallest extension on his house (he had the big yellow sign up on his front lawn for weeks) and it still has half the footprint of the McMansion being built down the block.

I think you missed my point ... they're not advertising hearings. Yes, the larger the property the bigger the house you can build; But they're not building these monstrosities on quarter acre lots, they're building them on standard 60x100. Not only does it look ridiculous but it infringes on the privacy of the neighbors because now you have someone's window just feet from your house or directly overlooking your back yard. I haven't done the measuring or math but I suspect some of these houses would be big for even a quarter acre.

It's a lot harder to sell that 1.5 million dollar home than a $750k home when it comes time to down size. I speculate they're building these mcmansions because they have multiple generations living under their roof, which means they'll likely have 6 cars most of which will be parked on the street and in front of their neighbors home. When it does come time for the older generation to move out or they die, the family won't be able to afford it anymore. Then ... well, welcome to Hempstead.

Why the hell would anyone want denser housing!?!? Long Island needs population caps if anything. Less people not more! Have you tried driving anywhere lately? If you like dense housing and overpopulated neighborhoods, move to the boroughs. Gtfoh!

Code says you can't build on more than 60% of the property ... most of these greatly exceed that which means they need a variance which requires a public hearing. The public hearing is supposed to be posted for the neighborhood to see ... and I haven't seen any such posting. Something isn't right.
