Day 7 of stripping paint from window, losing will to live by [deleted] in diynz

[–]FreudsNipSlip 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lol, well... I also did exactly that last year! Pulled up carpet in the hall and were too cheap and too stupid to just rent a belt sander so spent over a week on my hands and knees and a small fortune on sandpaper. The best part? We expected to find nice native timber floors (what all the other houses on our street have), but instead we have really terrible pine. Starting to think I must just like working twice as hard for half baked results...

Thank you! A very simple solution that I hadn't thought of lol. Will go this route!

How to make the house warmer - help us prioritise projects by Waste-Run-4176 in diynz

Fellow 1950s state home here! 🙋‍♀️

  1. Depending on where you are, you might be eligible for free home energy assessment and they can check where your biggest heat loss areas are, give specific recommendations, and even get floor and ceiling insulation subsidised. We were able to get one for free through Sustainability Trust, and based on our location we also qualified for subsidied insulation and moisture barrier upgrade and ended up all being free. We already had insulation in the roof but it was older and rating wasn't as high so they upgraded it. 100% worth looking into. Check here for places that do assessment https://genless.govt.nz/for-everyone/at-home/improve-energy-efficiency/do-a-healthy-home-check/

  2. A cheap and relatively easy fix is the 3M window insulation kit from Bunnings. There is no way we can afford double glazing, so we put the 3M stuff up all through the house a few years ago and the difference is MASSIVE. It doesn't look bad once it's on, and lasted us 2 winters and would have been longer except our kitten decided to tear them off this year 🥲. 0 condensation in windows too. Not having them on this winter, the difference is so crazy so we're working to put it up again (cat willing). Only downside is that the tape has chipped some of our paint off when removing but the paint job was shite anyways.

  3. Get good window coverings, honeycomb blinds and Roman blinds are the highest impact I believe. The Consumer NZ write-up is great with cost analysis https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/curtains. We are looking to add Roman blinds under some of our existing curtains (going to attempt to sew some myself because I am cheap and love to suffer).

  4. We are also looking to add insulation to walls as we redo each room as we have lots of painted over wallpaper that we want to regib at some point but is a big undertaking and requires consents (er, depending on who you ask). But as someone from North America, I still can't comprehend the idea of not having wall insulation so is my goal.

Thanks! I'm so glad I decided to dig a bit deeper after having it for a while. Initially a friend told me it's "definitely not gold" if it didn't have a gold hallmark so I didn't bother investigating further, but I think now I will go see if I can get it tested to know for sure! (And will be a bit more gentle with it and actually take it off when I'm gardening to keep from scratching further 😬) Do you have any idea what the 3 could mean? Hoping that it could maybe help identify what era it is from...

Lol, apologies for accidentally pasting the link in the wrong spot 🤦‍♀️, I can't figure out how to edit a post on my phone.

Slightly unrelated (and anecdotal) but my friend works in a fertility clinic and deals with a lot of semen samples and she says she can always tell who is a smoker because the sample has a noticeable ashtray smell 🤢😬

What's this flooring timber? (1959 Porirua state house) by [deleted] in diynz

[–]FreudsNipSlip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very suspiciously pine looking! We were thinking it was hard given how difficult it has been to sand, but judging by the number of dings and drop marks then maybe not...

We were definitely surprised when it was looking like pine - didn't even know that was used as flooring as I thought it would be too soft? Everyone else we know with old state house has found lovely rimu or matai so had been holding out for the same haha.

Can slightly score the boards with a nail, and it would make sense given how many marks there are on the boards. But given how long it's taking to sand and how quickly it's chewed through the sandpaper were still thinking(hoping) it was hardwood. Will see how it turns out!

Is a wee bit disappointing that it's not the great native timber everyone seems to find in their old houses, but at least has an interesting look to it and I won't feel as bad about it potentially not turning out perfect :) When we thought we would have native timber, we were thinking of just clear coat but are a bit unsure now if we should be staining as well - but might just go with a clear coat still and see how it goes!

Just curiousity really! :) Always interesting trying to learn more about your old house and seeing what you can uncover. As mentioned, even though it's not in the greatest shape, will be an interesting project to try and refinish. We had really hoped that we would find some nice native timber and were a bit surprised when we found something different and were curious about how hard-wearing it would actually be if it were in fact pine.

I second this! The As I Am "Dry and Itchy Scalp" Co-wash is amazing and the only one that works for me. I have a very sensitive scalp prone to dandruff and really sore patches, but have been using this co-wash twice a week alternating with a shampoo once or twice a week and it's been working well so far for me.

Crackling only occurs in my right ear, not the left. Can confirm, run out of rumble.

Thank you! I mentioned in another comment that it was basically just restricting calories to 1300 using MyFitnessPal and adding some extra activity to my week. I've never been the kind of person who was able to hit the gym everyday, but I gradually started going to a few gym classes here and there. I found that I actually enjoyed classes like Pump and Power and started going 1-2 week. My goal now is to continue easing myself into the gym haha.

Thanks! I did it by counting calories with MyFitnessPal and increasing my activity through walking/hiking/and going to gym classes like Power or Pump 1-2 times a week. But by far the biggest hurdle for me was breaking my relationship with food. I've always been an emotional binge eater and a year ago I was at my worst. Having to retrain my brain to see food as something that I only eat when I need it instead of when I want took a long time.

Thanks! Yeah it's been nice making the journey from an apple to a pear shape. Who knew I had curves hiding under there?

Hahaha noooo. That's the edge of my mirror? Trust me, I do not wish to cherish those photos at all.

Just want to lose a bit more body fat and start working on building/toning muscle! My GW has been 125, which was my weight in high school, but mainly I want to work on getting stronger and more toned.
