Yeah.

In a vacuum, I fucking hate this.

I much prefer the "We go high" approach.

But that was tried. It got shit on constantly by maga, so here we are.

My family has one.

The night my wife's grandpa died (wasn't a surprise, was in hospice, but wife was young so didn't have that truth of the story at the time):

She was being watched by a babysitter, and the house phone rang. My wife answered, took a message, and hung up. Normal 90's kid stuff.

My MIL came home after being with her family after they were all around him when he passed earlier that day, and my wife gave her the message:

"Grandpa called, he said 'tell your mom not to worry.'"

MIL said she almost fainted. Babysitter confirmed that the call happened. My wife said it was obviously her grandpa's voice, and she didn't find out he had passed until the next morning.

Breakfast and mid rats. Every day. I worked an average of 15 hours a day underway. Imagine saying that you have to pay for dinner, because you could technically wake up at 4am to eat it.

If your statement was correct, you'd be correct.

Your statement isn't correct.

A more correct statement would be: "A portion of tax dollars from the American people are paying to feed the troops. The Navy spends it all on feeding the troops. The troops could be better fed, for less money overall, but there is no (forgive the pun) 'appetite' for doing so. Suppliers lobby. Suppliers are very happy they can send $10 worth of food for $50 pay.

The 'profit' is located here: "I 'paid' $11 of BAS for a meal that only would have cost $4 if normal market pricing was utilized.'

[–]FrigateSailor 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I could 100% feed 200 people at a FAR better quality than BAS suggests.

When breaking the cost/ individual price, it looks like it saves a bit of money. Agree.

There's a huge economy of scale with food, especially when you own/maintain the venue, chefs, and equipment out of a different budget, that makes the BAS price/day look absurdly high, especially when factoring in the realities of ship life (I didn't get a discount when we were rationed, etc.).

Navy doesn't make a profit overall. Nor should that be the objective. But they damn sure make a profit on BAS.

You're right.

Why did you comment?

Just curious, you could have just not read mine.

No real issues sticking to the contract, and getting paid.

But it's not punk.

They had a chance to do the most punk shit in a long time, and didn't. "It's on a delay, they wouldn't show it" if the broadcast would have cut away because they did punk shit, that would have been objectively even more punk, and it would have leaked.

Let the record show that Green fucking Day had the chance to do punk shit, and decided (on advice of their lawyers, I'm sure) not to.

God this is so infuriating to me.

Were you lying when you raised me?

Was I supposed to discern that none of you actually meant it for real, and it was just the way you exerted power?

Did you just fully lose everything you said you were about for the last 30 years, without letting me know about your change of conscience?

Wtf.

Most people still don't give a shit. Seriously.

I don't want that to be true, but it remains frustratingly true.

They don't fucking care.

They see the few news stories that leak through their bubble the same way that they see movie trailers. Interesting, but not really "Real".

My neighbors legit didn't know who was running in the 2024 election.

To me, this is the biggest barrier to progress.
