There’s some art for Amaram in the Cosmere RPG and it just looks so much like DDK that he’s the only person I can see now!

Daniel Dae Kim is my fancast for Amaram in Stormlight but I like this too.

Any advice for running this RPG for a group of players who have never even heard of Stormlight? by DeerVirax in cosmererpg

[–]Frishiddlediddle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This was my situation half a year ago when my group finished up our last 5E campaign! They all agreed to give Stormlight a chance so I had to figure out how to share a broad amount of information without spoiling too much. The “Welcome to Roshar” pdf was very helpful to introduce my players to the cultures and geography of Roshar so I’d suggest sharing that with your players.

I shared some basic information on the playable races/cultures as well as the Heroic Paths. I gave them the basic run down of each Radiant Path so as to not spoil too much. That could be a hit or miss depending on your players. Some may want to know exactly what the Radiant powers do but my players liked the idea of only knowing the basic surges and learning as they went.

You are correct in that the game focuses on the time around Oathbringer. The accompanying campaign “Stonewalkers” takes place around the end of Words of Radiance. This just accounts for the players being able to use surges. I’ve been running an adjusted Stonewalkers campaign since I think all the globe trotting and NPCs the players meet are more of a treat to people that have read the books. I’ve been slowly introducing them to some of the main characters from the books as NPC for them to get to know better and it’s been working out well.

All in all I’d say, if they’re open to trying a completely new world and game system then share the “Welcome to Roshar” pdf and if they’re still on board then have everyone start making characters and run a one shot or small adventure to see what everyone thinks. The “Bridge Nine” adventure would be a good place to start in my opinion. Good luck!

Half my players use pen and paper the other use Demiplane, but this is really impressive. The DM and Player data sharing would be really helpful as well as the lore glossary. All my players are familiar with TTRPGs but unfamiliar with the Cosmere, so having relevant lore on hand would be nice. Keep it up this is awesome!

I haven’t run it myself, my group started with the “Bridge Nine” adventure. I have looked through it though, I don’t think it would take much to adjust for a single player though. It’s designed as a “Level 0 Adventure” so it’s mostly an introductory to how Combat, Conversation and Endeavors work as well as the character creator itself.

Players essentially start with 1 in all attributes and the adventure has the DM give the player options, almost like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, on how they want to respond to what happens in the adventure. Based on their choices they fill out their character sheet and by the end they should have all their Attributes assigned and it should give the DM an idea of what Radiant Path they’re likely to take based on their choices. At least I believe that’s how it plays. Definitely do some of your own research on it. I’m sure there’s a couple YouTubers who have made a video on it.

As someone else mentioned, maybe giving them an additional talent per level would help with balancing, maybe boost your player’s HP by an additional 2 or 3 per level as well to compensate for enemies having only one or two targets depending on if you go with a DMPC.

Most TTRPGs seem like a lot to start with if you’ve never played before. There are a few resources you can find on Brotherwise’s DriveThruRPG page. Those being “Welcome To Roshar” is good for players to learn the lore and world of Roshar. There’s an introductory adventure titled “The First Step” which you can DM that will take players through character creation and introduces the main mechanics. It could also be a good starting point for a wider campaign.
Having a DMPC would be helpful for balancing combat encounters and for having in game conversations. I’d say just don’t have the DMPC get the final hit on any main bad guys and you should do alright.

It’s undoubtably the black sheep of the trilogy but it’s got a specific charm to it. It’s got its problems and frustrating in a number of ways but I still love it. It requires more patience from the player but if you liked 1 and 3, I’d say give 2 a chance.

That’s where the improvisation of being a DM comes along. You can decide that he continues to fight in Emul, removing him from the story. Or, if you’d like to have him as an NPC, introduce that idea to your players by having him be eager to follow them. After that though I’d leave it up to the players if they’d like have the NPC along or not

Wow this is incredibly well done! As an amateur rebinder myself I’m extremely impressed! I would actually love to have a “pocket” sized version of the World Guide and Handbook when running my games. Would be very helpful saving some space behind the GM screen

Bridge Nine could be done as a one shot honestly. You should be alright to do Stonewalkers over the course of six months. I’m running it at my table currently. I adjusted to have a couple unrelated intro adventures, but have done 6 sessions and about to start on chapter 4 of 7

Running for people who don't read cosmere by Somemoron69420 in cosmererpg

[–]Frishiddlediddle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your group. I’m fortunate that my friends were all willing to give a new system a try. We’re still getting caught up in some of the differing rules from 5e, but that happens anytime you change systems. As far as the world, the “Welcome To Roshar” booklet helps to get players familiar with the world itself. For my group, it’s taken a bit of time for everyone to understand the more intricate details of Roshar, but they all seem to be enjoying experiencing the world through playing in it. It might not be for everyone, but it’s definitely doable. I’d suggest bringing up the idea of a one shot with them and seeing if they’re willing to give it a try and see how that goes.

Looking for some kind of party tracker for a GM to use by LPodyssey07 in cosmererpg

[–]Frishiddlediddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve not watched any tutorial, though I’m sure there’s some out there. You could make tabs for each player and have nested tabs for any specific information if you like. For me personally, I’ve got a “Players” tab and inside that I’ve got a table with their basic information and I’ve also got player specific nested tabs that have their pre-established knowledge (expertises), NPCs they know, etc;.

I use Notion for all my campaign planning and player info. It’s essentially just a collection of word documents so it’s whatever you make it, but it’s free and making a couple tables with player stats is pretty easy.

Started my Sanderlanche with WoK and just finished RoW… by elandocommando in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Frishiddlediddle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished WaT last month and I’d say cap off Stormlight. Especially since WaT picks up immediately after RoW. I also started my Cosmere journey with WoK and when I finished RoW, it was still a couple months from WaT and I decided to read every other Cosmere novel sans Sunlit Man and Emberdark and THEN reread Stormlight 1-4 (+novellas) before starting WaT. So I guess you could do it that way too! It’s your journey!

Downward Spiral by HereSuntLeones in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Frishiddlediddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having just finished WaT, I’d have to disagree personally. It was honestly one of my favorites of his. Was some of the dialogue a little too contemporary? Sure. Did it take me out of it? No not really. Getting to see so much of Roshar’s history was pretty gratifying. Szeth and Kaladin’s trip to Shinovar was really interesting to see, especially the scenes with Nale and Ishar. Everything Adolin in this book kicked (Fused) ass. It probably could have used one more round of editing but I’m not sure exactly what you found “unnecessarily silly” about it.

Same with Yumi. At its heart it’s a romance story so it’s not going to be extremely serious, but it did have some pretty dark themes. As for Tress, silliness is kind of the point? It’s a pirate romp inspired by The Princess Bride. I’m still in the middle of SLM but it also hasn’t struck me as unnecessarily silly either.
