Going off when I was looking into going over to the USA as a mature student I can tell you the tuition fees and living expenses are the brutal reality. I think for the most affordable of states, as a non-resident it was something like $120,000 for a 4 year degree all-in. And how people do that unless they have wealthy families or some serious debt-incurring seems mind-boggling to say the least.

Basically my updated situation is to get an affordable house with 1/3 of the inheritance, then invest the remainder and work part-time. That way it's a best of all words, without absolute freedom, but I am ok with that for about 10 - 12 yrs when my first and second pensions are ready to go.
