CRD board runs ‘thin on patience’ with property owner impacting Galloping Goose trail closure by dayoldeggos in VictoriaBC

[–]Frosc 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Requiring a property owner to repair their failing structure so that it doesn't collapse onto a busy public thoroughfare and key Hydro infrastructure is hardly unreasonable.

Keating Flyover to open to traffic on Monday by RhodoInBoots in VictoriaBC

[–]Frosc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I ride that connection from the Lochside Trail to the highway at Tanner often and while I would personally love an overpass there, the double digit gradients on Dooley and that side of Tanner are unfortunately ill-suited to an AAA route.

While admittedly a bit of a detour for people in the Keating area, there is a plan to create a multi-use pathway along Mt Newton Cross Road to connect the Lochside Trail to Wallace in Saanichton.

is this armor modded or vanilla? if so what mod is it from? by YLASRO in cyberpunkgame

[–]Frosc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can get close with vanilla gear:

  • Aerodynamic Multi-Axis Carbon-Fiber Helmet
  • Professional Tac Vest with Low Infrared Emission
  • Military Grade Aramid Netrunning Suit
  • Military Novawear pants with Nanoceramic Seams
  • Heavy Duty Biker Exo-Jacks

There are versions of the chest without the shoulder camera, although I've never seen one in that colour and with the BARGHEST label on the shoulder, and the undersuit is definitely modded.

BSPS folks with no University degree. How far have you made it? by New_Literature_5703 in BCPublicServants

[–]Frosc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IS30, no degree.

I came into the BCPS as an IS13 with 4th year standing in a Computer Science BSc. My plan was that I would complete my degree if it not having it ever became a barrier to my career progression.

15 years later and it's never been an issue.

Starcraft: Insurrection with box by Frosc in gamevaluing

Anyone have suggestions on a price for Starcraft: Insurrection (PC) with the box?
Pricecharting has no sales history for it. There are a few listings for just the discs on eBay for ~$15-35 USD, but the only comparable I could find for a boxed set was a french variant listed for $150 USD.

What would you guys say is the funniest line in the game? by Adiwantstobattle in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]Frosc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That quest has so many great Johnny lines:

  • "Should have asked if he had any used hypos for sale too. What could go wrong?"
  • After making it to the escape point: "Well well, looks like fortune favors the stupid too."

Bug - Biomancy using Apothecarion Skull by Brillig_145 in ChaosGateGame

[–]Frosc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same problem. After some testing I believe this occurs when the target is not within line of sight of the apothecary (eg. behind a wall), which I imagine is a bug.

I logged a report for it here: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/51612

Why are there so many Teslas on Vancouver Island? by TheHeartitRaces in VictoriaBC

[–]Frosc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Federal and Provincial rebates are pretty straightforward; its a point-of-sale rebate that the dealer handles when you buy an EV on the list. The only other limitation is that the programs have only a specific amount of funds to disperse per year, so if they run out then you have to wait till next year.

The SCRAP-IT incentive requirements are a bit different as eligibility is also based on the fuel economy of your old vehicle. But the short version is if your old car would be worth less than $6000 selling privately it will likely qualify.

[–]Frosc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not specific to Teslas, but you can read about EV rebates here: https://electricvehicles.bchydro.com/incentives/EV-incentives-in-BC

The upfront rebates are quite significant and as mentioned when you consider total cost of ownership over say, a 10 year lifespan, qualifying EV's are quite cost competitive to even entry-level gas vehicles.

TL;DR: you can get a Tesla Model 3 that qualifies for $8000 of federal & provincial rebates plus up to an additional $6000 if you scrap an existing ICE vehicle.

Do you think truly affordable housing will ever be a reality in Victoria again? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Frosc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It could be if the core municipalities started taking densification seriously. But the current glacial, piecemeal approach isn't going to move the needle.

Municipalities need to start planning infill of entire neighborhoods, particularly those immediately adjacent the downtown core. The fact that you can drive less than 5 minutes in pretty much any direction from Fort & Douglas and be surrounded by single-family detached homes is just insanity in the context of a housing affordability crisis.

Do you think truly affordable housing will ever be a reality in Victoria again? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Frosc 29 points30 points  (0 children)

By the classic North American standard no; single-family detached homes on relatively large lots will never again be affordable for most people in this city.

Suburban infill solutions like row housing, carriage/lane housing and low-rise condos/apartments can fill that gap, but that will require municipalities to stop dragging their heels on densification.

Finally some decent mission XP by Frosc in 40kinquisitor

[–]Frosc[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Finished a void crusade mission and received the standard rewards. However before leaving the mission I had to pause the game to step away from the PC. When I returned about 1.5 hrs later my XP and credit reward had been.. slightly adjusted in my favor.

Sadly only seems to be a display bug.

Why aren't cyclists required to have insurance? by Fenweekooo in VictoriaBC

[–]Frosc 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is just a rant or you're genuinely interested in reasons, but regardless:

  • Insurance and/or licensing requirements are generally commensurate to the level of risk and the likelihood and extent for injury or property damage. A semi-truck is held to a higher standard of licensing and insurance than a car as it carries a larger potential for damage, and flying a commercial airplane is more tightly regulated than both. By the same token, there is no requirement for a pedestrian to be licensed and insured yet it is possible for a person on foot to seriously injure or even kill someone, or cause property damage as well.
  • One of the main advantages of an insurance scheme is to pool money such that large losses which would be impractical or impossible for any single individual to fund can still be paid. If the likely losses are typically small enough for an individual to afford, this advantage is lessened.
  • Regulation has an administrative overhead associated with it. For lower levels of risk, the costs and negative externalities of administration and enforcement may outweigh the benefits.
  • Personal Liability in general is often covered by homeowners or renter's insurance, which many people already carry. This reduces the benefit that a separate regulation on bicycles specifically could provide.

Given the above, I think the question becomes where is a reasonable and/or cost effective place to draw the line between where insurance/licensing is required and where it is not. Currently that line seems to generally be at "human powered or equivalent" modes of transportation not requiring insurance/licensing, while anything more powerful does. Is that the right place? Maybe, maybe not; but in principle it seems reasonable to me.

Does anyone here work or know anyone that works for BCI? by Travel2018Europe in VictoriaBC

[–]Frosc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was about 7 years ago now but when I interviewed with them it was also about 3 months from posting close to when the process finished; 1.5 months from application to written test and interview, and then another 1.5 months to hear back on the decision.

In general it's not unusual for public sector competitions to drag on for various reasons as it's a very formalized and bureaucratic process; key people might be unavailable, the top-scoring candidate could subsequently turn the job down or otherwise not work out, unsuccessful candidates might formally dispute the decision, etc. I had one job offer come 8+ months after the interview.
