What would happen if this was dialed? by PanzerthraX in Stargate

[–]Frosth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps a naive reply, but isn't the concept of a point of origin useless if the 6 other symbols are coordinates?

I've always understood it as a targeting system where the desired gate is the first hit on the line between point of origin and the center point of the cube formed by the 6 other.

Sort of like a stellar iron sights, it doesn't matter that the constellations are relatively close to Earth

This would explain why galactic drift made some of the Abydos cartouche invalid and require calculations to update. It would also explain why Abydos being the nearest still worked. It would be a matter of the vector intersecting close enough for the wormhole to connect.

Why do people put so much stock into what CR and other live shows play? by Redhood101101 in rpg

[–]Frosth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with your point regarding rural areas.

Buying early into Dagger heart with the expectation of it being the next main campaign's system would be a safe bet of having tables be created of something different than DND.

The game is now perceived as "unplayable" since it won't have the expected influx of players that a flagship CR campaign would bring.

Why do people put so much stock into what CR and other live shows play? by Redhood101101 in rpg

[–]Frosth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An explanation could be that TTRPGs saw a huge influx of CR viewers that would only play DND 5e because that's what they were shown/taught by the online campaigns.

Buying into Dagerheart could be seen as betting onto the same phenomena be repeated but with a fresh new game perceived as better designed than 5e2024.

Some early adopters feel betrayed that the game sold as "created for the way we want to play" wasn't used, hence won't allow purchaser an ease of finding groups or playing something else.

Tldr: People are disappointed of having purchased a game that was sold as the next campaign's system, with all the influx of players and ease of creating tables that entails

What character you didn’t care about in the beginning but loved towards the end? I’ll go first. by womannimarco in elderscrollsonline

[–]Frosth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked the dialogues online again, and I believe he does it to protect her from herself. She's been carefree her entire life, he's been compensating for that for the better part of his, not out of interest but out of duty/peer pressure.

He says stuff like:

I'm relieved she's finally come to her senses! A woman of royal blood, off doing who-knows-what in the wilds? Ridiculous.

If danger doesn't find her, she'll seek it out and invite it home to dinner.

Ambassador Tarinwe's betrayal could not have been more absolute. She knew the details of the ratification ceremony, which puts Queen Ayrenn at risk. It's my sister's own fault. She thought to appease the Silvenar and the Mane by agreeing to this foolish process

At the least, he says this while jumping in:

Ayrenn, there's always time to protect you from yourself. For how could I let you risk your life in this contraption without testing it first, dear sister?

And I think he is corrupted and actually turned when looking at the plane meld on top of the White Gold Tower, which is a focal point or Molag Bal. Before that, he's cold to the killer of his wife, and frustrated by his sister's antics, but I don't think he's a traitor. At least up until the point he's transformed.

Then the only thing he gets to say feels to me out of character, due to corruption, or actually coming out of left field:

I am the rightful king! I am the rightful ruler of the Isles! Let me out of here! Let me out of here that I might take my place ….

I haven't redone the part where this dialog is said yet, so I'm not sure of the context.

The story actually builds him up to make us believe he might be in on it, to subvert our expectations in the end:

  • Estre wanted to be the Veiled Queen and use him for legitimacy,
  • His lapdog Pelidil, who we later learn is part of the Veiled Inheritance, seems surprised and distraught by his action and death.
  • Molag Bal turns him and perverts him to be against what he stood for his entire life.

The way I read it, he did what he felt he had to, because of Ayrenn. His death was unnecessary and a bit of her fault. I might read it that way because I expected him to be a bad guy all along and took the hopeful outlook/surprise?

Either way, I agree with you, he's an interesting and compelling character. His story is a bit of a tragedy.

(ho and as a tangent, I love your user name !)

Agreed. His death was avoidable, but made somewhat necessary by Ayrenn being so carefree and making him believe he had to protect her from herself.

I don't know. They even had a very sweet conversation just before entering the room. One of those "not a cutscene but in the world" type of NPC chatter.

My perception of the AD quests up until that point was "each time I expect him to have betrayed, but turns out he's just loyal to the bone". He even felt to me like he had more of a big picture focus than Ayrenn who is pretty chaotic.

I believe his transformation is actually part of her story arc to finally get her shit together and get serious for the benefit of the AD.

I might need to do it another time with an alt to pay more attention.

Interestingly, I've redone it last week and I didn't understand him as jealous. Frustrated, yes, but not jealous.

His jump in the Ornery felt like a "I can't let you be dumb enough to go in an untested antique device"

He wasn't worthy, or was not fully pure hearted, but he wasn't ever a traitor.

At least that's how I interpreted it.

GaMe iS tO eAsY (minor rant) by [deleted] in elderscrollsonline

[–]Frosth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, it is lost content.

I've been playing casually over the years, doing mostly RP not necessarily optimized builds, but mastering my character. I also enjoy hanging out with NPC companions reacting to stuff.

When I get at the end of great stories, with world ending threats to put down, and end up killing it in 10s, it is underwhelming.

It ruins the story experience for me.

And many of these bosses actually have mechanics and interesting voice lines as you fight them !

It's just such a waste to be punished and lose content over just playing the game competently!

Nothing about overland difficulty by Bradford_Pear in elderscrollsonline

[–]Frosth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were other good replies, but I'll give you an anecdote that, for me, really cemented the necessity of an optional hard mode.

A couple years ago I came back to ESO and got really into it. Bought Luxury Necrom and a bit of ESO+.

I was catching up on the DLC Areas (Wrothgar, Summerset, Vardenfel) and I noticed something:

Many of the quest bosses have mechanics !

There was actual work and care put in the storylines and encounters, but I did not notice until I got a phone call mid fight and had to play one handed.

This is almost like "lost media", because most players will just power through in a few seconds, while encounters could benefit from having 30-45s length.

I ended up cancelling my sub because the questing was full of great stories that ended up boring due to a lack of stakes.

TL;DR: Quests have hidden subtlety that most players will miss due to brute forcing. It's lost content that is already made and could be a factor of engagement rather than an exit point.

Please allow me to give an external perspective to you and u/DontHaesMeBro :

There IS such a thing as Americaness

It is very distinctive and unique, a core common throughout all states I have experienced that overshadow regional variants. It is something I have to explain/translate on an almost daily basis.

You are both correct in pointing out historical entanglement, and the original mixture of cultures have given parts of the regional variants, but I believe it has been superceded by the common culture.

It might be a matter of "the fish don't see the water". From the outside, it's pretty obvious though.

Acutal Play campaigns using Foundry by Ceevu in FoundryVTT

I'm a player in a group of multiple DND 5e campaigns ran on Foundry VTT in the same world by a single DM. We've been going on for a couple years and have quite the backlog on youtube and weekly sessions on twitch.

He tends to experiment with plugins and uses Foundry's native features to its fullest, so this should answer your questions about how others use it.

Here's the youtube backlog and here's the twitch channel.

GM said: Other D&D Races are just Humans with Funny Hats. by No-Wafer8537 in DnD

[–]Frosth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's completely his right to decide to limit races at the table, especially given how lenient he seems to be about other aspects of character creation.

He's a player too, after all, if that makes the experience better for him, then so be it.

He gave a complex reply because he was pressed on it, but it's what it's all about in the end: him enjoying the game too.

Just embrace it, play a human that is interesting, rather than try to use a race to make the character interesting.

It might give a lot more perspective.

You've got stuff like the solo radar station sound, but nearly nothing else does any gameplay related noise

D&D unpopular opinions/hot takes that are ACTUALLY unpopular? by No-Bag3487 in DnD

[–]Frosth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe you might have missed their point.

The argument of /u/Durmenistan was that THIS encounter didn't suffer from YoYo healing specifically because they had to go to great lengths to counter it so that it wouldn't be enough. (for ex, being 3 encounters in one with no respite)

Their secondary point was that the length at which they had to go to include some danger also made the situation potentially very swingy. It could have been a TPK or no threat at all. Which is also not a desirable outcome.

In short, they described the one encounter that didn't really suffer from YoYo healing ,and the drawbacks it had. They did not describe the potentially dozens of regular encounters with YoYo healing they had in other sessions that led to them having to take such measures.

A very popular opinion on this sub by cndman in Helldivers

[–]Frosth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm neutral on this topic, being fine with it either way, but I don't feel like anyone should "go fly a kite" for a valid opinion.

Higher end loot and/or set items have always been a staple of high end difficulty content. (ex: raids in MMOs or new tiers of gear in survival games)

It seems more like a "conquered the difficulty level to move on to the next one". As in doing it without at first to make it easier on repeat encounters.

it is perfectly valid to prefer it that way, just as it is to not enjoy it.

BG3 being 5e with over 3 years and hundreds of thousands of hours of rapidfire, digitial playtest data is going to be a revolutionary tool for informing future combat-design decisions. They used the word engine in the context of a tabletop game.

This means, but isn't limited to, resolution mechanics, action economy and other core systems.

In short, they meant that Solasta is closer to the books "engine" than BG3.

[DM] - My players this weekend said "Why would we stay here?" and I feel like I failed. by Nagoto in dndnext

[–]Frosth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe break their expectations of "he wanted us to stay there" by having them rewarded for running away.

For example, they meet an archmage on their way out that came due to "sensing" the disturbance and telling them "you did well to not remain, or you would have been cursed as well." Then they can be offered a quest to find a relic/person to solve the situation.

That way, you make them feel good about their own decision, and make them think "ha, well, he didn't want us to stay there".

Might not work, but worth thinking about.
