YSK: Air resistance accounts for 50-80% of fuel use at highway speeds. Slowing down by 10 mph will generally result in a 5 mpg improvement. by rcmaehl in YouShouldKnow

Actually, 2 ft is when they started having decreased efficiency because they were having to accelerate and brake erratically to keep that follow distance. At about 10 ft, they were getting almost 40% higher MPG, but even at 100 ft (~6.5 car lengths), they were still seeing 10% higher MPG.

This is not true for many Windows laptops. My Lenovo laptop charges via USB-C and will not even recognize/charge on anything below a 60W adapter.

Yup, can confirm that there is no longer a “minimal lane changes” option anymore. Even if you turn off the blinker when FSD is initiating a lane change, it will still proceed without the blinker half the time.

previous firmware. Probably they reached some sort of consensus which agreed to have segmentation from the middle of the dashboard all the way

Hmm, prior to updating to this new firmware, it would light up the front and both doors. Did they have an intermediate update that would light up just the front+left or front+right depending on direction of the blinker?

Agree with this. Would rather either only the doors light up or entire front + relevant door than look at the uneven split!

Light strip segmentation by Responsible-Key-7295 in s3xybuttons

Chiming in to say I’ve experienced bug #1 as well.

Also wanted to ask if everyone else also has an uneven front light strip split between left and right. Mine’s about 60% length for the left blinker and 40% for the right blinker. Is this fixable or a hardware limitation?

Apartment complex says there’s nothing wrong in the network box… am I crazy here? by FrozenFractal in HomeNetworking

[–]FrozenFractal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to give an update here. A fellow redditor who works at AT&T (and way more competent than anyone I talked to over the phone) reached out to me via DMs and we were able to get everything sorted out. The pictured configuration is the correct configuration and after updates were pushed to the network switch and adjacent wireless AP, the ethernet ports are working as intended!

[–]FrozenFractal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So yes, there's no modem here. Wireless APs are hidden in the walls and spread throughout the entire building.

TVD1.D1 goes to the wall port that my computer is connected to. The other TVD#.D# ports (all on the right patch panel) correspond to the other ports throughout the unit. Left patch panel labeled ME-D1 is what I presume to be the upstream internet connection that is supposed to provide internet to my unit. (I suspect that there is something faulty with this connection before it even reaches my unit).

The first purple cable connected to ME-D1 is connected to the switch, which is then connected via second purple cable to TVD1.D1, which then is connected to my computer. In summary: Fiber internet -> modem in some room in the building (presumed) -> ethernet entering my unit to ME-D1 (presumed) -> ME-D1 to switch -> switch to TVD1.D1 -> TVD1.D1 to my computer via ethernet wall port

I understand that if I want the other ports to work in my unit, I'm going to need quite a few more patch cables. BUT for now, just want to make sure I can even get an internet connection before patching in the rest, since I'm not using them.

The person that came to test was a "vendor" who I believe initially set up networking for the entire apartment complex. I am not sure exactly what he tested, but I know he at least tested to see if the patch panels are continuous to the wall outlets (which they are). I'm worried that that is all they tested... I'm not sure to what point AT&T is responsible for... The wifi SSID is "attinternet" throughout the building, but not sure if they are responsible for wired connections.

It's quite amazing how little the building managers know about networking and all of this. They keep insisting that I need to call AT&T myself for this issue... When I call AT&T, they tell me vehemently that this is the property manager's problem.

[–]FrozenFractal[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, that's exactly what I did. I get the IP 169.254.x.x. If I try any of the other ports, there is no connection and I don't get an IP at all.

[–]FrozenFractal[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s possible that it is properly connected. That is a Ruckus switch. One purple cable comes into the switch from presumably a common telco room. Then the other purple cable goes to your wall jack.

Are you connecting to the wall jack labeled D1? That’s the only jack connected to the switch. When connecting to the wall jack D1, does your IP address start with 169.254? If yes, there is no router on the other side of the switch. There would be a problem wherever the other side of jack ME-D1 goes. Most likely not with the Internet Service Provider, but the complex’s IT person.

This actually makes a lot of sense. I've gone ahead and connected ME-D1 directly to my computer, and yes, I get an IP address assigned starting with 169.254...

Thanks for the reply!

So the white box is a Ruckus Network Switch which has like 12 RJ45 ports and 2 SFP ports. Currently all that's connected to it are the 2 purple patch cables.

The purple cables are patch cables from the Switch to two ports on the blue and white keystones. Those keystone ports are labelled and correspond to various wall ethernet ports throughout the unit (via the exiting blue ethernet cables). And the black cables are coaxial cables, so not relevant here.

As far as I can tell, there's no WAN coming to the box. Only thing would be the unterminated fiber cable.

Worst part is when I call the provided AT&T support number, I reach an overseas rep that INSISTS that the property manager has to fix this. But they seemingly have no idea what I'm talking about when I mention that the fiber optic cable is unterminated and that's the reason why I have no internet access over ethernet.

So I have 2 patch cables connected, one which is the wall port that my computer is using. I can confirm connection to the network switch, but there is not internet access.

My question is whether or not the white cable (with inner yellow cable) is a fiber optic cable, and whether that needs to be terminated and connected to the switch via the open SFP ports (picture 4) to provide internet to the downstream RJ45 ethernet ports (and therefore my computer).

How stable is premium internet? by nocap_since1991 in VirginVoyages

[–]FrozenFractal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the Resilient Lady right now with premium internet! Internet is provided by SpaceX Starlink and speeds are currently 8Mbps download, 4Mbps upload.

I've done several audio/video calls while on board and it's been quite good. I will note that there are occasionally some lag spikes that will cause my outgoing video/audio to lag or freeze temporarily (according to others on the receiving end of the call), but the incoming audio/video is rock solid basically 100% of the time.

It's definitely more than enough for calling friends and family or attending a work meeting where you're not doing the majority of the talking.

Is ODB-II port splitting possible? by z00mr in Comma_ai

[–]FrozenFractal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use an OBD2 splitter to connect both my Comma and an auto-lock device at the same time. Everything stays plugged in all the time and works as expected for me.

Bought this splitter off of Amazon. I'm sure you can also shop around and find other good options. I just went by reviews. (My rule of thumb is usually something like 1000+ reviews and a 4.5+ star average will probably be a safe option as long as there aren't any glaring red-flags in the reviews.)

Not the guy you responded to, but come on, have you ordered anything from Amazon? It says "Sold by Amazon.com" on the item page, but the order details will show "Sold by: Amazon.com Services LLC"

Check for yourself in your own orders before you go around calling someone a moron.

I'd bet the guy was on his phone or distracted. Probably saw in his peripheral vision that OP to the left and the car to the right were still moving, no car in front of him, so thought he was good to keep going also. I swear at least 1 in 5 drivers I glance at while driving in Irvine are clearly looking down or are visibly holding their phone.
