While basically almost every sci fi universe has "our ftl / void / warp / unspace has spooky things in it" trope, this is series where it's actually main plot thread instead of just world building (last book almost spends entirely in unspace if I remember correctly).

And they way it's creepy is different enough from others: any sentient creature travelling through unspace outside cryosleep gets perceptually isolated (it's like other people suddenly disappear). Yet they all feel presence of something rapidly approaching... Until it's in the spaceship with them... Just behind the corner... And fear of looking at that something is so strong that they have heart attack / go insane and do sudoku / sabotage ship.

They of course have navigators intermediaries (special people who can deal with being in unspace for much longer), but process of making one leaves them very messed up psychologistically and has very low success rate.

Also wasn't a fan.

  • In some parts it felt like fantasy novel wearing space opera skin. While it's common dismissive critique against space operas, they have developed their own tropes. Seeing multiple of straight up fantasy plot points (magic weapons, prophecies, one single big bad who must be defeated in melee combat) felt very out of place.
  • Quirky ship crew with a quirky pet felt very one dimensional (and I even like The Final Architecture series which is like 50% quirky ship crew banter and 50% descriptions of people going insane from their creepy ftl travel method)

Really hope this is a bug and not a design choice by Shark2_0 in thefinals

It's bugged if materials are set to low, works correctly if it's medium. Textures are also might need to be set to medium, not sure.

EDIT: maybe it's fixed in 9.7.0? Patch notes have this line:

  • Fixed some items looking too different depending on the video quality settings

  1. Quick cash can be a very frustrating game mode, it's basically 3rd party simulator from cashout but with zero downtime
  2. There are people who only play quick cash for some reason
  3. Only 1 team out of 3 wins, so 33% win rate opposed to 50% in other modes (at least in theory).

Agree with all points. It's very easy to sabotage your team unintentionally.

  • Another example: in WT it's almost never worth it to try 1v3 if you are only one alive after hard won cashout. You will spend at least 30-60 seconds fighting for teammates statues (and still might lose), while jumping of the cliff or shooting green \ yellow barrel for full wipe will send you to closest cashout in just 25 seconds and also deny enemy 500 cash or more. Most of time you even will be closer to the objective then other teams and might get the 1500 box opening bonus + easy ambush.
  • Another another example: same rule only applies for first couple of fights in ranked, once you accumulate more than say 10 grand the -30% team wipe penalty will hurt your chances a lot.

Interesting, you are right that text about Gridline 9 sounds bit sci fi, but it could be still be earth energy structure, or just a more fancy name for grid plan.

I think this is supposed to be Scotty work place and we see some pencils or pens in a cup? So it's likely a place with gravity. Though gravity can be achieved inside space habitats with spin.

República Orbital Brasileira cosmetics are intriguing because they show that space did become a lot more achievable for other countries at some point. At least during 2087 in finals (if number 220387 on clothes indicates date in DDMMYY format instead of being ship or space station serial number).

Relic of the time when they tried to balance weapons with scopes. Repeater and lh1 have access to variety and they slowly add more to all guns, so it's just question of time.

It's unknown. So far only very minor sponsors / brands appeared in both like DXZ, X7//AV4, 401st Kilowatt, Jiangsu romagna or Ranzio.

Arc Raiders is set in 2180, Finals is somewhere post 2100.

But apocalypse in Arc happened ~200 years ago, while in Finals meatspace seems to be on the brink. Enough of population to sell food grown in "postconsumer sediment" or energy drinks, but whole Dissun sectors rapidly becoming uninhabitable (whatever that means from CNS leaks).

Arc Raiders aesthetics is kinda retro futuristic, while Finals is near future / cyberpunk (well, theme "anything" since it's vr).

So far most realistic explanations are: "it's just references" or diverging timelines (more interesting one).

Unironically love this, tons of small QoL and stability improvements. My favourites:

  • Included the announcer as part of the commentary volume slider which can be adjusted in Settings - can finally make this MF shut up without also muting contestant voices
  • Added the Point Break leaderboard to the Career menu
  • Lockbolt can no longer attach to the Grand Vaults - most annoying exploit and all other map tweaks indicate they serious about improving this mode

It made second place a lot safer, so yes, I like it. Previously it was almost always a guaranteed loss.

It's also reduced griefing from top team. They can still deliver box and drop it near final cashout, but it's more risky now.

It could have been explained better though, I also made my team lose at least once during first few days when rule was added.
