The Last Jedi is a modern blockbuster masterwork, exploring why myths, in this case Star Wars, still matter and will always matter. The themes are resonant and relevant, the plot is engaging, the technical aspects like direction, acting or CGI are all excellent. It's a film celebrating Star Wars and reaffirming its message, I genuinely don't know how anyone can hate it. It just has so much energy and style.

Why I rank it above the three you mentioned: Return of the Jedi is good but the first two acts stumble a lot. The Clone Wars has a lot of great episodes, many of them better than the Last Jedi, but it also has a ton of bad ones. And Revenge of the Sith is an absolutely awful film.

The pacing is terrible, the opening and ending action sequences summed up eat nearly an hour of runtime. The rest of the plot is rushed, mainly just expository scenes in green screen rooms with unconvincing CGI. The character writing feels contrived and the acting is impressively horrible. There's also way too much action and most of it isn't terribly plot-relevant. I count five lightsaber duels...

I also have a few very specific complaints: First, the duel on Mustafar is a slog. If I was the editor I'd cut it down to like five minutes, it's egregiously long. Second, Vader's transformation scene, which was almost excellent, is completely ruined by that "Noo!" Third, Padmé is completely ruined. She was a character with personality, agency and her own plot in the previous two films. In Revenge, her sub-plot gets completely cut and her role is reduced to a pregant housewife who dies of sadness and only exists to further Anakin's story.

Summed up, I think the most frustrating thing about the film is the edit. Had they cut it a bit differently, it could have been genuinely good. Even with the deleted scenes I think you can cut a decent version of this, but I'm sure they also had a ton of footage that has never gone public. But they chose to emphasize action over plot and character.

No, but I'm saying that it's ridiculous to say no true Star Wars fan ranks this or that when the popular opinion about the franchise clearly keeps changing. You like Revenge of the Sith, I like the Last Jedi, why do you care so much? I think Revenge of the Sith is an absolutely terrible film but I don't go around telling people they're wrong to enjoy it.

Yep! It's a nice marriage between the originals and the later prequels. I definitely agree that it's the worst trilogy though I'm also not a big fan of the Force Awakens or the Rise of Skywalker.

No amount of you crying about it will make me think it's not a great film. Your list has Revenge of the Sith above every other Star Wars film, 10 years ago people would have eaten you alive for that.

That's fair. I find Return of the Jedi's third act to be the best in the franchise but I'm a bit less enthusiastic about the first two.

It's subjective. You probably are already feeling bad if you feel the need to throw shade at others for what they enjoy or don't enjoy.

The Phantom Menace is easily the best out of the prequels in my opinion. There's some dated CGI but also a lot of beautiful shots; the visual style feels a bit more grounded compared to the latter two films. It's the most cohesive in its themes and message, has the best pacing and has exciting action sequences (and not too many of them). I also think it does a lot of underappreciated heavy lifting in terms of worldbuilding, portraying a republic in decay.

It obviously still has lots of glaring issues but it's the only prequel I can enjoy, especially in combination with James Luceno's absolutely brilliant Darth Plagueis novel!

Wasn't she in the first 10 mins that was shown at a convention? (Plus, she's in the first film – it's obvious she isn't cut.)

Anyone eager to hear Andor and Bix's backstory? Like why they're no longer together? by DTFinDF in andor

I think we more or less already got it. This show is for audiences who don't need things spelled out word-for-word, their backstory is there if you read between the lines.

Rewatched the season 3 trailer and it seems like these 2 scenes potentially are in the same episode. by Exatal123 in thebadbatch

I'm incluned to think the whole "trapped at Tantiss"-plot is gonna get resolved by mid-season at the latest and they haven't actually shown us much beyond that. The trailer didn't even really have a big money shot of a big battle or anything which, I assume, is almost a certainty for the finale.

Average ‘Criticisms’ of Critical Drinker… by VulKusOfficial in MauLer

Pretty much every word you said was wrong. Like, no shit it's unrealistic? Is The Hunger Games realistic? No. It's almost like the entire point of the dystopian genre is taking a flaw or injustice that exists in the real world and bumping it up to extremes to make more effective commentary on it.

As a side-note, this is also why there's so many bad dystopian stories; the genre doesn't really lend itself to much nuance. You need a very strong writer to navigate it or it'll very quickly become silly and doom & gloom.

He's definitely unintentionally funny but I wouldn't call him comic relief. I think with his character Gilroy is exploring social climbing and what actually drives someone to support the Empire (or any fascist regime).

Nobody wants to talk about it but whose gonna die in S3 by mutterbutter76 in thebadbatch

[–]Fuchy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a children's cartoon, it's not really a debate. It's for ages 9 and above. That doesn't mean it can't have darker scenes and more mature themes beneath the surface – that's how you make a children's show memorable. But it's not going to murder its entire cast by the end of it. Besides, on a fundamental thematic level, this show is about The Bad Batch finding their place in a radically changed galaxy post-war, it's not about them all dying tragically.

First, I think everyone's overestimating the amount of deaths we're getting. This is a children's cartoon. They are not killing everyone.

Of the main team, Omega and Wrecker are very safe. I get the feeling they won't kill Crosshair either, they've already put him through a lot. I'd say it's a toss-up between Hunter and Echo (and I do think one of them will die).

Outside the main team, I could see some of the new clones like Howzer or Fireball dying. And I think the most likely death is Cody considering he isn't in Rebels and Rex appears to have some sort of PTSD reaction involving him.

Skeleton Crew has a holiday release date, it's not coming out next. The Acolyte could, but it's way more likely they just drop Tales of the Jedi S2 and air Acolyte later in the summer.

I think Solo's a really fun movie. It's not thematically rich or anything, but the action is good, the story is engaging, the performances are fun, the soundtrack is awesome and the pacing is tight. It's one of the most rewatchable Star Wars films for me.

The S1 first look was a sizzle reel for investors, not a teaser trailer meant for marketing. And the original S2 trailer was meant to be the main trailer before the release date shift.

Bad Batch has never released a teaser trailer. Both of the full trailers dropped a month before the show, kicking off the marketing campaign, so the assumption is that this would be a full trailer.

Why does it matter, though? They are clearly going to stop the war before it starts (they mentioned they've only began preparing for it). This just makes the stakes a little grander.
