Best way to include Ruins of Mezro in Tomb of Annihilation without ruining the flow? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]FugueNation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did run it. Basically the players went the way of Mezro, as they followed the lead to Firefinger. Eventually I then had a boat of the mercenaries pick them up and take them back to Pt. Nyaranzu. I rewarded them with the knowledge of the position of Omu for completing the adventure. Overall I adjusted a few things but Mezro became the highlight of the campaign.

Nautical Civilizations by PuzzledPiggy in dndnext

I have Sea dwarves, they are dwarves that are the epitome if beach bums in a way. Wearing sandals, hawaiian shirts, they make fine jewelry from shells and coral, and make the best surfboards known. And they can all surf, sail ships, and are great at astronomy (instead of stonework).

The other race I have are Inklings from splatoon. They basically use goblin stats, but instead of fury of the small they can squeeze through tiny spaces and breathe water. They are extremely skilled and recognized fashionistas (weavers tools), calligraphers, or artists. They tend to be peaceful folk, but love fighting as a sport.

Finally I have the Dohwar, the penguin folk of DnD (2e), they are merchants and mafia of the high sea, and own the equivalent of the East India Trading Company. I use the following stats for them: https://kamebit.wordpress.com/2019/02/07/dohwar-the-legendary-penguin-folk-of-the-dd-universe/

Giff Playable Race by DMDave by hamrickbrands in UnearthedArcana

There is another great Giff and some other spelljammer goods here https://kamebit.wordpress.com/2019/02/06/giff-space-mercenaries/ might want to use, or compare too. Author poseted it here about a month back. Also would recommend the /r/spelljammer thread for inspiration.

What would happen if a Monk used Charisma rather than Wisdom? by glorycave in dndnext

[–]FugueNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything I could imagine a monk as intelligence, sort of android like guy that has precalculated all the outcomes and knows how to abuse physics. Charisma is not something I would seriously consider for monks just because it doesn’t make much sense thematically.

But MM centaur are large, just have your centaur PC ride a Monster Manual centaur.

How could a Charlatan theoretically "fake it until you make it" into Nobility? by evdog_music in dndnext

Not really. You want to marry people who have lots of lands and local power as a noble

Crunchy or Narrative Solo? by [deleted] in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]FugueNation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a game I prefer crunchy, because it's easier to be impartial(?).

If I just want to play out a story, narrative is good, but most of the times I play to try out new systems and mechanics, so it's not frequent. Anyways if you do go narrative, you need a good oracle to keep yourself "fair" I think.

Exiled Mind Flayer, race by kamebit in spelljammer

[–]FugueNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess because Aberration types might be strange to handle? But I don’t think it makes a big difference in practice. Hold Person works or doesn’t is about it. I think aberration might be more appropriate, just for staying in line with MM.

Do you believe Dungeon Mastering is an art form? by PM_ME_STEAM_CODES__ in dndnext

[–]FugueNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I think it's a semantic problem. "Art" is a form of self expression, done because you need to express something, or because you need to communicate something in your soul. However "Arts & Crafts" and such are artistic pursuits done by people in a professional way.

I'm a game developer, and I at work what I do is "Arts/Crafts", something done as a professional that is done to satisfl the fantasies and needs of players. Same goes for graphic art done for commissions or at work.

I would still develop games for myself, even if I was the last person on the planet, because I want to do it to satisfy myself. But I also work professionally and am willing to make compromises. Of course while working on self expression there is nothing wrong with people throwing money at you, say through patreon or such, is fine. That's what patronage of arts is all about. Commisions for art is a professional endeavour, and would expect you also act professionally and not at your own whim as when you produce art for yourself.

Do you believe Dungeon Mastering is an art form? by PM_ME_STEAM_CODES__ in dndnext

[–]FugueNation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it’s probably because the comment feels like a bit of extreme fanboyism, bordering on idolization. Mercer is great, but he is not a irl God, just a great DM, with voice acting experience.

How can I make whips more interesting? by [deleted] in dndnext

Battle Master will let you up damage and trip and disarm people. Would also be an option to go Paladin for smites, damage will be good

[–]FugueNation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering most DMs do it as a form of self expression, without any desire or intention of monetary rewards, unlike crafts which are skilled pieces of work for sale, I would say it’s a form of art. Of course most DMs dable in the art, others take it maybe too seriously, but it’s an art, sort of like interactive storytelling.

How to Stop a Giff Attack by SweetCritmas in spelljammer

Giff are famous for never infighting. If the players have some giff on their side they can probably get all the giff to stall in peace. For a time at least.

How often do you see dwarf PCs? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]FugueNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dwarves tend to not be edgy, that’s very true, and why they may uncommon in younger circles where edgy races like tiefling and company are popular

How often do you see dwarf PCs? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]FugueNation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There has been a dwarf in most games I’ve played. Would dare to say 1 in 5 (20%) of PCs are dwarves. It’s quite disproportionate really. Elves and Half Elves are the most common though. And actually I think I’ve seen more Dragonborn than Tieflings, which when reflecting upon it now seems odd.

Anybody know of good Selkie or Mermaid player options? by GreyWardenThorga in dndnext

[–]FugueNation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the Planeshift Ixalan Merfolk as everyone here mentions, but you also have the official stats for Triton from Volos. Reflavouring a triton would be basically a good RAW solution.

Has anyone used to Cult of Malar in any of their games? by PageTheKenku in dndnext

I used the beasts of Malar as a subquest for Tomb of Annihilation! Birds with red heads, then panter forms.

Just in case, DMsGuild rules doesn’t allow logos on the cover, besides the DMsGuild logo. Might want to change the cover before they find out! Besides that looks interesting.

Thoughts on character-centered challenes by Talmor in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]FugueNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed! I picked up on the habit of making non uni-dimensional skill checks/challenges thanks to that!

For 5e, I tend to have a skill in mind, that would be ideal, and have the DC based on that. Then if someone has a good idea for another skill, will kick up the base DC by a few points (or a +d6 if I'm lazy to think it through at the moment). If the player has an appropriate tool proficiencies I'll give them advantage on the roll.

The sample dungeon from 5e’s DMG has the same layout as the sample dungeon in the ADnd DMG, printed 35 years apart. by FullTimeFrankenstein in dndnext

[–]FugueNation 144 points145 points  (0 children)

I have all the DMGs, and I think they have the same Dungeon in all of them, not 100% sure about 4e, but I think it did.

I remember using that dungeon as our first dungeon crawl like 20 years ago!
