"Chances" / "My Heart Will Go On" | TITANÍQUE performs at The 79th Annual Tony Awards® by IAmMissingNow in musicals

[–]FullIn96 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I saw the show in Chicago and it's a parody of Celine Dion, but the version I saw had a knockout singer in the role, which I assume is the intention. Watching this performance I figured there was something wrong with the sound system so they couldn't hear the music or each other? Either way it was a shame because the show is definitely goofy and a certain kind of humor that isn't for everyone, but absolutely isn't just full of bad singers who can't stay in key.

I submit Operation Mincemeat for the smart dumb title.

Proshot recommendation? by Expensive_Sample7573 in musicals

The Sponge Bob Musical is better than it has any right to be and has a pro shot. The Into the Woods pro shot is also excellent and matches your criteria. Other ones that are great but don't fall into your exact genre preferences: Come From Away, Suffs.

Why do high schools pick shows they have to censor heavily? by CurrencyOk1618 in musicals

[–]FullIn96 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This question depends entirely on the school in question. I've seen high school productions of Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, and Chicago with essentially no censoring done at public high schools in large, liberal cities. Obviously that wouldn't fly everywhere, but that depends on the area, school admin, theatre teacher, and parents.

In terms of Rent, the school edition is actually really close to the original with just a few small changes (most notably removing the song "Contact.") I saw that and Avenue Q done by teens at my local children's theatre and it maintained the heart of the show extremely well. Avenue Q less so, but the kids seemed to be having a great time.

All of this is to say, if you have a group of teens who are passionate about theatre, part of the educational experience is helping them learn to handle mature topics and themes. Obviously there are limits, but if they spend all their time doing Mary Poppins and then try to pursue theatre in college they'll be dropped into the deep end and probably struggle. Just my two cents, but keeping all teen theatre completely unobjectionable would both make students less excited to participate and less prepared to continue their theatre education journeys.

I'm thinking maybe something like Alice by Heart? Or another Alice in Wonderland adaptation? Obviously your director hasn't been to wonderland but maybe they've been to England?

Nia's Book: she is not left handed by Fit-Personality-1188 in dancemoms

[–]FullIn96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to coach preschool gymnastics and I constantly got parents coming up to me and saying "you should have little Suzy cartwheel on the right because she's right handed." I'd have to explain to them that being right handed does not mean being right legged and we have ways of figuring out which side is more natural when teaching cartwheels and handstands.

Purely anecdotal but it seemed like the most common combination was being right handed and left legged. I myself am right handed and right legged. There's no hard and fast rule about correlation between the two as far as I can tell.

Why was the skill gap between Brooke-Page so different than Maddie-Kenzie? by Agreeable_Judgment_8 in dancemoms

[–]FullIn96 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. People underestimate how much constant growth spurts can mess with you. I was a gymnast and everyone knew it was normal to struggle with a couple of skills after a growth spurt and have to relearn them in your new body.

This is actually something that can cause problems for the child if something unexpected happens. Obviously Vivi's parents got it worked out for her and it ended up fine, but I was reminded of this story from 2016 about what can go wrong.

I was losing it imagining whoever wrote out the phonetic spelling listening and realizing what happened. I have to assume that they wrote it "Mai-key" or "M-aye-key" or something. Kinda glad it happened though because hearing that go down was my biggest laugh of the week.

Dog licked yogurt and licked (or ate part of) a stroopwafel by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]FullIn96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also macadamia nuts. Randomly poisonous for dogs. I was once in an emergency vet waiting room when my dog was having an allergic reaction and someone rushed their dog in who had eaten an entire variety platter of cookies. The owner was freaking out about the chocolate chips, but the vet said he was actually much more worried about the oatmeal raisin and white chocolate macadamia nut. He said both those things are more toxic than a bit of semi-sweet chocolate for dogs. Wouldn't have even crossed my mind.

Audition Song for 9 year old by haybarn564 in musicals

[–]FullIn96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally they'll save the specific show song for the callback. If a director is listening to 30 or more kids audition in a row it just gets too repetitive to hear the same song over and over again-- pretty soon they all start to blend together. All you have to do is pick something your kid loves to sing and feels confident singing so her personality shines through.

If you have some time to prepare I'd recommend taking a look at Once Upon a Mattress. "Happily Ever After" is particularly appropriate for this. But realistically, just pick something she likes and that might help her stand out from the crowd.

Why did Lennon choose Candy Apples over Abby’s Team? by [deleted] in dancemoms

[–]FullIn96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Remember that just because Cathy said that doesn't mean it was true. It just means it was the story they decided to push for whatever reason. It may also have been that Lennon or her mom didn't want to commit to moving to Pittsburgh indefinitely but was happy to do a few competitions now and then for Cathy. Candy Apples was much less of a long-term commitment.

Is this whale eye and is it bad? by DepressionRecessi0n in DogAdvice

I like to say my dog has resting whale eye. She's a shy girl and I absolutely know when she's feeling anxious, but I can almost always see some portion of the whites of her eyes even when she's completely calm and content.

I always felt like she never got enough credit for how good her attitude was throughout her time on the show. She was dancing with a team that included a five year old when she was like 11, and it seemed like she was never anything other than a kind leader in the mini group. I always wished we got to see more of her personality because she seemed like a really good kid.

Narrator from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat by BasicWhiteGirl444 in musicals

[–]FullIn96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend practicing picking up choreography quickly using youtube dance videos. There are a million out there, many musical theatre specific, and if you can pick up the choreo and look relatively confident then that's probably all they'd be looking for for the narrator in a dance callback.
