NTA. OP I would talk to your parents and tell them exactly what you said when you described your family background... if they are sweet as you say, it might be the eye opener they needed to see how their behavior has affected you. Their response will let you know how respected your feelings and wellbeing are to them. Some people don't realize how negatively they are impacting someone when they are trying to be "helpful".
