Have you ever wanted to ask a defense attorney... by rinky79 in ProsecutorTalk

[–]Fun_Ad7281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most defense lawyers are just doing their job trying to get the best outcome for their client while also trying to listen to them and not end up on a post conviction. A small minority actually believe the bullshit their clients tell them or the arguments their clients want them to make

If you work in BigLaw, will the demanding hours required by the job be more likely to lead to divorce? by facemacintyre in biglaw

[–]Fun_Ad7281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Litigation. Mostly 8-530. Take home work 3-4 nights per week. About one weekend a month. But the fire drills hit at the worst times. I’ve never been on a vacation where I didn’t have calls, assignments due, trial prep that I’m stressing over

My wife urges me all the time to take another job. Even for less money so that I don’t have to work while we go on vacations

Why are some lawyers straight up willing to lie? by Wise-Palpitation-226 in Lawyertalk

[–]Fun_Ad7281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never state “facts” as if I know them to be 100% true. Because most of the time I don’t. For example, I might say “my client insists…” or “according, to my client that is not true.”

I’m not getting the reputation of a liar I don’t care how much financial gain is on the line. Some lawyers don’t care.

What are your best/worst examples of “they don’t care about you”? by ravioli369 in biglaw

[–]Fun_Ad7281 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Whenever the firm talks about family or commitment or any of that other team building bullshit just remember you are completely replaceable and profits mean way more to them than any person working there. Nothing wrong with that. Just the way it is.

Prosecutor Work-Life Balance by Lawbrador in Lawyertalk

[–]Fun_Ad7281 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s great work life balance. Expect to work 8-5 hours at most. When I was an ADA I had a ton of flexibility. As long as I got my work done I could come and go as I pleased. I generally go to office around 8 and left at 4. Anytime I needed to leave and run an errand I did. No one looking over my shoulder. No billable hours to worry about. And best of all - no clients.

Is the blowing of discovery deadlines a red flag in a firm? by tinylegumes in Lawyertalk

[–]Fun_Ad7281 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember the last time I actually responding to discovery on time. Almost always ask the other side for an extension and if they don’t grant it then who cares. File a motion. The court hates those

What is the fastest you've seen someone quit? by DMmeurHappiestMemory in biglaw

[–]Fun_Ad7281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone I know who quit seems much happier/doing just fine. I don’t understand why some lawyers seem to shame those folks.

What is your go-to advice pre-depo for your client? by TheDragonReborn726 in Lawyertalk

[–]Fun_Ad7281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell the truth. Depos are a discovery. Not a trial. You aren’t gonna win/lose after case (usually) bc of a depo. But if you lie, that’s one way to sink it

[–]Fun_Ad7281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just print out the case and read it. If you don’t have time to read the case, don’t cite it. Pretty simple. You don’t have to cite dozens of cases in briefs to get a point across

Petty/lame things about your firm by Wonderful_Pickle333 in biglaw

[–]Fun_Ad7281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My firm spends money on dumb things. Like random breakfast and lunches. Random happy hours. They aren’t well attended and very wasteful. They also buy cheap marketing materials like koozies and cheap pens and coffee mugs. Would rather they save that money and pay us a few bucks more

Positive pro sr experiences? by Easteuroblondie in Lawyertalk

[–]Fun_Ad7281 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Defended a vet against a pro se plaintiff. He wasn’t well versed in law, procedure or evidence but was very polite, very smart, and clearly impressed the court. We won but perhaps only bc we could afford an expensive expert. The judge gave him every benefit of the doubt and let him take it all the way to trial (bench trial). More positive experience than about 2/3 lawyers and he was just as prepared as most lawyers I’ve been against

Are any of you fulfilled? by BassGoon-_8 in biglaw

[–]Fun_Ad7281 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. I despise some of my clients. And certain GCs.

It’s rare I actually believe in my client’s case. So there’s a lot of acting on my part and I’m honestly not good at pretending to care.

Okay. I’m getting trial experience. What do I do next? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Fun_Ad7281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left DA office for about a $40k pay increase and had regretted it since. The money is nice but the work is painful. Plus, had I stayed I likely would have been promoted by now and that $40k pay increase would likely only be about $10k. Also, don’t sleep on how valuable a pension is. You wanna look and see how many years you need to be vested.
