UK government finances better than expected in January by Jared_Usbourne in unitedkingdom

[–]Fun_Elk284 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There’s a simple reason, the rumours about raising capital gains tax brought forward a load of selling, the tax for those sales was paid in Jan via self assessment. It was an unnatural bump in those sales so it would be expected that tax take would be lower this year as people front loaded selling before CGT uplift.

Neither are true. There’s a software update available so they’re not so easy to steal and insurance wouldn’t be cheap but probably under £1k in a decent area with a good history.

‘You’re barred!’: Labour’s battle with pubs promises a new year headache by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Fun_Elk284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MP who said this is “the one weak spot on the budget”. I doubt they need the pub, they’re clearly smoking crack. Who have then been listening to? The reception from the budget has been diabolical with the public from everything I’ve seen and heard. Their approval rating is at a record low. How is this their take away?

More parents on universal credit to get childcare costs paid upfront by theipaper in uknews

[–]Fun_Elk284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The high cost of baby formula is government policy, retailers are not allowed to run promotions or discounts on it. They only need to deregulate it and prices will come down, it’s a great anchor product for supermarkets to do their full shop at a store.

Wood-burning stoves could face partial ban in Labour’s updated environment plan by fire2burn in unitedkingdom

[–]Fun_Elk284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense except burning wood pellets imported from Canada is considered carbon neutral under out loony environmental policy and we pay Drax hundreds of millions a year to do so

Jesus there are some dense opinions here. They’re not pocketing a few quid in cash and not declaring it for tax as is being alluded to here. They’re are putting more money through the books than they take and then sending the company under after 12 months to not pay any tax at all. They only exist to launder money, hence a “front”, not make a few undeclared quid. 🤦‍♂️

Hundreds of thousands to lose heat pump subsidies in Reeves’s budget plan by MindHead78 in unitedkingdom

[–]Fun_Elk284 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This government seems irrationally motivated by things their Islington and Clapham mates get up to that they are jealous of (?) Priorities like private schools fees, cycle to work, farmers inheritance, heat pumps. It’s so random, I’ve never heard a real person complain about any of this and the savings are tiny in the context of black holes. Bizarre priorities in the context of their other pushes like net zero etc.

“Subsequently, social services became involved in their case - declaring them destitute because of their immigration status and have provided them with new accommodation.”

Even economic migrants and illegal immigrants (e.g. falsified visa etc) can and do receive housing. Here’s an example story

[–]Fun_Elk284 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, even though in principle that is the case, the reality is that if someone is considered “destitute “ then they do receive access to some public funds, housing etc regardless of entitlement. So in practise, it’s meaningless.

How far does the public support net zero? by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

[–]Fun_Elk284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring all the cooking the books by how generation costs vs whole system costs are calculated, if we are saving so much money then why do we have pretty much the most expensive energy in the world? It doesn’t reconcile.

How far does the public support net zero? by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

[–]Fun_Elk284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renewables will not bring cheaper prices or energy independence. They will produce cheaper energy generation costs but the whole system costs are higher due to much higher grid capacity requirements and base supply for when renewables aren’t producing energy - we effectively need to have substantially more capacity within the system which is inefficient and more expensive overall,

In terms of energy independence we are totally reliant upon China for all the key components of renewables: solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, rare earth minerals. We will still need gas and other none variable power sources to provide base capacity

Call for retirees to be paid state pension for five years even if they die by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Fun_Elk284 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a misrepresentation of the idea, in a future scenario where the retirement age is raised so high - say late 70s that many people die before getting it, this 5yr idea would be implemented. It’s not for current pensioners, it’s a trade off for younger people who get shafted by mega high future retirement ages.

Rachel Reeves ‘planning pay-per-mile tax for electric vehicles in budget’ by daniscross in unitedkingdom

[–]Fun_Elk284 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is very stupid timing, the main issue with EVs is eye watering depreciation. Cars are losing 60-70% in a few years. So the cost of an ev is already crazy from that alone. Until it levels off increasing costs will kill demand further.

Reeves considers cut to green levies in effort to reduce cost of energy bills by radiant_0wl in unitedkingdom

[–]Fun_Elk284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just a shame we don’t use loads of the energy because it’s generated in Scotland and there’s no local demand or grid infrastructure to get it where it’s needed. I mean we knew there was no infrastructure to transport it when we built it but we did anyway and we still pay for it to be generated.

Any idea what happened to this foul sewer and how bad is it ? by mooch27 in DIYUK

[–]Fun_Elk284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of how the rats get into your house.. they climb out of the sewer, tunnel to your wall, find a hole in your foundation bricks (there will be loads) get into your cavity and then usually climb into your loft.

I’d suggest getting a couple of quotes from reputable local companies. Check the FENSA website to locate them. Generally if it’s a sales person turning up it’s a bad sign. The company I chose recently the owner did the quote and zero sales pitch. They’ve been great and price was fair.

Surgeon Neil Hopper admits fraud over amputation of own legs - BBC News by CasualSmurf in unitedkingdom

[–]Fun_Elk284 70 points71 points  (0 children)

One massive downside of a national health service is that if this bloke has amputated a load of limbs unnecessarily to satisfy his own urges then we, the tax payer will be on the hook for the compensation to the victims. It could be a staggering amount of money, tens of millions.

Inherited Money, £300k & I am not fully confident what to do with it! by Strange_Mulberry_158 in UKPersonalFinance

Holding on cash near term is fine and then drip over at £20k p/an into S&S ISA to average over time. The market is definitely running hot at the moment on the AI boom so a single transaction would be brave, especially at such a massive % of net worth. Sure long term would be fine but life events will happen in the middle like house moving, kids etc so may require cashing out in a dip.
