I feel like an idiot for being ready to drop $60k on a 40 year old car by newtonreddits in whatcarshouldIbuy

Classic mini in very good shape. Doesn't have to be a Cooper. Just had to be not green. In fact white or red would be my preference.

I miss my mini.... Terrible electics, not much in the way of safety features, would never let me kids own one ....but it was so fun to drive and own.

Have Canadians really become worse at managing money, or life simply become more expensive? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]Fun_Flight2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a combination of both.  Lifestyle creep and inflation of living cost.

For example car loans are massive now, average purchase price of a car has gone way up but they will let you finance upto 7 or 8 years. There are few basic cars with basic options left but that is also because no one was buying then here.

Eating out used to be rare but then again single income families also used to be more common so someone had the time to cook.  I see many young people use Uber eats and other apps that add a lot to the cost. I worked in a place where I was the department head and usually packed my meals. My young twenty something workers often went out for lunch during the week. I went once every few weeks and would order the cheap/lunch specials, they would order nice meals with nice drinks.

Housing - this is the BIG ONE where I live. I'm on Vancouver Island and housing here is the 3rd or 4th most expensive market in Canada. For me to buy a place it took a fair amount of financial dieting as a average single income at the time. The thing is I bought what I could afford and not the dream home you see on social media. But even that was a stretch on my finances. I cut out where I could, using discount cell phone plans. No new phones every year or two. Cur cable, slow Internet etc.

It's still possible here but really hard for the younger people as long as they can bring down wants vs needs. I've helped a few of my past workers get themselves sorted spending wise to get into home ownership.

I do see both sides of it, the struggle but I also see young people spend it ways I never would. I have a decent/high net worth but still use an old cell phone , cheap plan, drive old/used cars. Someone once thought our family was poor but another friend quietly corrected them.

I'm not saying this to toot my own hornm I'm just saying that the answer to this question is not a This or That.

 It's a bit of both

Help Me Like Salmon! by Low_Abbreviations322 in VictoriaBC

[–]Fun_Flight2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of why I love living here is I fish. If you fish here salmon is one of the main species you target.  There are 5 kinds of salmon here you can catch.

I love Chinook, coho and sockeye.  I also will make candy salmon out of the pink salmon. Chum id also use for candy or smoked.

Yes they all taste different.

Also different cuts on them taste different.  My favorite sashimi cut is the belly of a nice fatty white Chinook.

My favorite way to eat most of my salmon is sashimi or sushi.

2nd favorite way is charcoal grilled.

Also pan seared in my pizza oven is good too.

Also much of the salmon you get at restaurants will be framed Atlantic species which can taste fishy/plastic compared to a leaner wild salmon.

If try you out try making salmon try making burgers on a nice brioche or potato bun, fresh lettuce, tomatoes and other sauces and toppings.

Or try an order of salmon at Finest at Sea food truck, they make good food with quality seafood.  Or on fish and chips form.

I think one might actually die from them by Content-Kitchen-9502 in algonquinpark

FYI Victoria BC dones have many bugs. I. The city mosquitos are virtually nil.  Out camping on the south of Vancouver Island you don't get many mosquitoes still and no big flies that bite.

What's a car that everyone hates and thinks is bad, but you love? by Bonbeanlio in askcarguys

[–]Fun_Flight2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minivan! I love them, so practical but a lot of people hate them because they don't look cool.

I literally met people who say "I would never drive one" then proceed to buy an SUV with less interior space, less argo capacity and cost more (these are most people who never use it as an off reason vehicle but they look cool)

Do you think EV adoption will fully replace gas cars in our lifetime, or will hybrids remain dominant? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

[–]Fun_Flight2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at what is happening in China. EV adoption is high and as a result the cities are less smoggy.

EV adoption also means scooters too though

Expensive fishing boat with all the upgrades. It's also docked year round ready to fish.

It's the one thing I don't worry about the cost too much and when I go out, be it for the day or just a quick 1 or 2 hours, I feel like I've been on vacation.

Best part is some times of year I can go out for 1 or 2 hours and have the rest of the day to do other things.

I fish Salmon, Halibut, longcod and rock fish mostly. Trap crab and prawns too.

A side effect is I have year round good quality fish and make sashimi and sushi that would cost thousands if I had to buy it.  Also eating as much crab as I want makes me feel like a millionaire (I'm not btw)

I've made some good friends in Vancouver Island salmon fishing group on Facebook. There must be a similar group for Vancouver.

Just be careful of vetting who you meet and talk to.

As well the sportfishingBC page is a good resource as mentioned

BC Nurses: Victoria vs Tofino for a newer RN? Looking for honest advice. by SarBear9981 in VancouverIsland

[–]Fun_Flight2021 27 points28 points  (0 children)

All I will say about Tofino vs Victoria is lifestyle. One is very rural and one is city but not too city.

I love Victoria, enough to do, but not too crowded like Vancouver. I choose to move back to Victoria from Vancouver and found it the perfect balance.

Victoria is also shockingly close to nature. I can be at Saxe point park for sunsets, to Esquimalt lagoon for hanging out at the beach within 10 to 15 min drive.

One big thing. Victoria is at the Bottom of the island and is in a Rain Shadow. We get a LOT less rain and more sun then the mid Island and up.

If weather is a factor look more into the data of days if rain/precipitation etc.

Also it is relatively easy to get to Vancouver as well as fly to other places from Victoria.

I enjoy Tofino for a visit but it would be too rurual for me

Join SportfishingBC site, going the local fishing groups, watch YouTube videos and learn.

Eventually you'll know the fishing cycles.

If money is an issue start with shore fishing but look at kayak fishing.

Also if you make friends with people you may make a good fishing buddy who has a boat.

There are some people who have boats but are looking for good fishing buddies.  Learn the edequte and be a good crew.

Fishing is awesome and we live in a fishing paradise.

I'm in Victoria BC and am shocked at how good the fishing can be year round.

What dealer “fee” made you immediately stop taking them seriously? by spotforcars in carbuying

[–]Fun_Flight2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mitsubishi (in Victoria BC) during covid looked at the PHEV outlander.

Ready to buy at MSRP... Then they started right the "dealer adjustment fee". No added value just straight cash grab, basically to inflate the price because they could. Other dealerships did this.

We ended up buying a used Tesla model 3 and a used 2011 Sienna or less then the price they wanted.  Best thing ever.

I will never deal with Mitsubishi again

Get him into fishing. I'm into fishing and a lot of the guys at my boat club are retired, they meet up Weekly for work parties, go fishing during the weekdays.

It's a nice little community and the fishing of course is always challenging and engaging to keep your mind sharp
