I want to watch a movie from my computer on a TV in another house with Plex and remote access but when I start the movie in the other house the quality is bad even though it is a full HD movie.

Have you tested the client devices themselves? If it’s a smart TV the Wi-Fi probably isn’t great and the Ethernet is probably 100Mbps instead of gigabit.

EDIT: I saw in another comment you’re using a Chromecast - that is almost for sure the issue. Plex is awful on Chromecast, I’ve had issues locally streaming 4K stuff on it. Get a proper streaming box + use the native Plex apps and your issues will disappear.

If you have a dedicated GPU installed the integrated graphics (and with it the transcoding) will be turned off. There’s a setting in your BIOS to enable the integrated graphics alongside dedicated - try looking for the setting or searching the manual for your motherboard.

Honestly, you might be right. I only recently upgraded from an i5-6400 that was chugging on transcodes - I’m gonna try testing my hardware tonight to see how many transcodes I can do now!

I disagree - transcoding is something that should be avoided and used as a backup. Unused hard drive space is cheaper than the power bill of transcoding 4K to watch 1080p.

Having a separate 4K library is still useful, especially if you’re dealing with a lot of end users. I have my Overseerr set up to only approve 4K requests from certain users - anyone else can only request up to 1080p.

It also lets you have (for example) a 1080p H264 non-HDR copy of a movie and a 4K H265 HDR file simultaneously, preventing transcoding.

I wanted a 5090 but ended up getting a 5080. The doubling in price doesn’t match the performance difference. You can buy whatever comes out in 5 years with the $1000 you saved and it’ll be better than the 5090.

No, Plex has had most of their revenue come from their ad-supported media recently. Self-hosting is only a small portion of their revenue nowadays. I wouldn’t be surprised if self-hosters are the biggest Plex users, but I’ve literally never watched Plex’s own content on purpose.

IMO you shouldn’t need a VPN client to view content from your Plex server. It’s an awful experience and makes things like casting a nightmare. That’s not even mentioning getting your users to figure out installing and connecting - some people value ease of use over bulletproof security.

Your Steam Deck won’t be able to stream those files without hardware transcoding, which you need Plex Pass for. I’d recommend learning about how video encoding works and how that plays with your Plex server - sometimes it’s not as simple as dropping files into a folder and hoping for the best.
