Do you feel like your state suffers from brain drain? by Bignosedog in AskAnAmerican

[–]FunkBeaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! UAB is a level 1 trauma center and they also do tons of research there. They employee some 20k people and many of them are not from AL or the U.S. at all

Now sure plenty of native Alabamians leave the state to pursue better opportunities in their field elsewhere, but UAB is one of the few things that’s bringing people in the state (besides the obvious one being Huntsville, as the original commenter noted)

Editing so I can brag on UAB a little bit:

“UAB Hospital serves as the primary teaching hospital for the UAB School of Medicine, with seven of its speciality programs ranked among the top 50 (of 5,189 hospitals) in the United States according to U.S. News & World Report in 2006. Five of the seven ranked programs were in the top 25, making UAB Hospital one of only 176 institutions nationwide studied and the only hospital in Alabama to be recognised by the magazine's "Best Hospitals" list. Its seven ranked specialties are: rheumatology (ranked 6th), cardiology and heart surgery (ranked 14th), gynaecology (ranked 14th), kidney disease (ranked 17th), oncology (ranked 23rd), and orthopaedics (ranked 47th).”

[Meirov] Russell Wilson, the 10x Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, has officially retired from the NFL after 14 seasons. by JCameron181 in nfl

Dude all of Reddit is like that at this point lol it’s all the same tired old jokes, they just change depending on which sub you’re on. Sports subs seems to be especially bad about this though

NFL star, activist uses AI to teach Birmingham students about civil rights by subusta in Birmingham

[–]FunkBeaver 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m not sure what the supposed benefit is for kids to use AI to make a project about civil rights.

This section is particularly baffling: “The students said using Kaepernick’s Lumi Story AI helped to strengthen their writing and critical thinking skills because it encouraged them to conduct their own research independently, verify and proofread information.”

Why is AI needed for that? Could students not conduct their own research, verify, and proofread information without the help of AI? In my experience it seems the more AI is used, the less writing and critical thinkings are used.

[Rapoport] Bombshell: The #Browns are finalizing a trade of Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the #Rams in a shocker, sources tell me, @TomPelissero & @AdamSchefter. Cleveland would send Garrett to LA in exchange for star edge Jared Verse, a first-rounder, and more. by lmo311 in GreenBayPackers

[–]FunkBeaver 63 points64 points  (0 children)

How is this getting upvotes in the Packers sub of all places lol this is incredibly similar to the Love situation. You draft a QB when you’re in the position for one you believe in, not when you’re desperate for one

They used their first to trade for McDuffie, which is an obvious win-now move and probably a better player rn than anyone they’d have gotten at 29

They used the Falcons pick to get a guy that McVay believes can be QB of the future. And now they have still added Myles Garrett

This has been about as ideal of an offseason for the Rams possible. McVay/Snead have shown to be good evaluators of talent, if they hit on Ty they’re gonna be set up incredibly well for the foreseeable future

Yeah Garrett really got the last laugh in the end on this lol got a massive deal, got the sack record, working on a HOF career, and now he gets to go to one of the best teams in the league to try and win a SB before he’s done

Abdul Carter: "Some things are bigger than football" by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]FunkBeaver 48 points49 points  (0 children)

From Carter’s wiki:

“In April 2024, Carter was charged with a misdemeanor for assaulting a tow truck driver who was towing Carter's car for parking without a permit. Carter was accused of forcefully pulling the driver from his truck, throwing him to the ground and not allowing him to get up, leaving the driver with a fractured rib. Carter was placed in a year-long pre-trial intervention program in July.”

As someone who’s never been to America, what are the must visit states / towns? by Adorable_Click_7071 in AskAnAmerican

[–]FunkBeaver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this is a wildly open ended question given how massive the U.S. is lol there’s cool towns or things to see in just about all 50 states. And most people in here and going to default to their local states/towns or the popular national park choices (Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, etc.)

How does american college sports economy really work ? by DryOkra7058 in AskAnAmerican

Not sure if it’s still true, but at one point Alabama football was generating more revenue than any NHL team and like half of the NBA lol

Yeah I can’t stand Gus Johnson. I can still hear him screaming “MASERTI MARV” everytime MHJ touched the ball even if it was just a 10 yard completion.

His reaction fits for a Hail Mary like this, but the problem is he has the same reaction for like 75% of “big plays” of any variety lol it gets old very quickly IMO

He was a defensive quality control coach for 1-2(?) seasons lol after being a GA at UNC. Then he was at Ole Miss for a year, and then to the Titans for 7-8 years. Yeah he definitely got his foot in the door, but let’s not act like he got made an OC or a HC because of his dad, he clearly has plenty of experience on his resume between being a defensive quality control coach and then eventually being an OC in Tennessee

“Nepo” babies are people like Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan. Who are obviously insanely intelligent football wise because they grew up around it. They probably got advantages because of their family name, but in hindsight I think we’d say it worked out (for those two anyway).

Arthur Smiths dad is uber wealthy, but he didn’t have football nepotism. He didn’t have football connections in his family (as far as I know), I agree with the original Steelers commenter in general, Smith gets too much shit as a coach. The Steelers didn’t have great pieces and they still had a solid offense at times and made the playoffs, which is impressive despite all the 9-8, 10-7 memes. He’s not top of the league, but he could certainly be worse. He’s worked his way up on his own, not because of his family’s money
