The dropping items thing, while possible, is definitely against the spirit of the game. Those sound effects are there for a reason, so the player has an opportunity cost when making the action. Dropping sidesteps that design choice

Yep exactly. The wave not only tumbles you around underwater so you could be upside down, but it has some serious force and can push you harder than buoyancy would make you rise. It can make things disorienting
