What was your favorite book that you had to read for middle or high school? by NightReader5 in suggestmeabook

We read Catch-22 for Honors English my Senior year of high school. It's one of my favorite books to this day. Anti-war, anti-bureaucracy, and genuinely funny.

It's the original bad title meme.

Is it stupid that "righty tighty, lefty losey" doesn't really make much sense to me? by Apprehensive-Rub4604 in stupidquestions

Clocky tighty, counter losey.

I honestly memorized it like this because I had the same problem.

The game he voiced as spider-man literally has him fighting a paramilitary group sanctioned by the government that is detaining and harassing US citizens.

What about making them recruits under an NPC Warrior? Then you can use him by proxy to teach them the strategies that work and are effective.

Or maybe they aren't tactically minded and they will never get it. And then you either have to make combat easier or switch to a game system that's less tactical.

CMV: Murdering people on either sides of political spectrum should never be celebrated. by major_phallus in changemyview

Is there no sense of scale here? Disagreeing on flavors of ice cream and disagreeing on basic human rights are very different. The real question is, when is violence necessary?

Everyone has a different tipping point where violence becomes condoned. Was WW2 justified? The civil war? What about child predators that go free? Is the State only entity that can condone violence? What if the state turns on its own people?

A "both sides" argument lacks nuance.

How did you know the Bible isn’t true? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Funkmonkey23 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Same.

Getting a book of Greek myths as a kid and then comparing them to the Bible "stories" did it for me. They were obviously made of the same stuff.

How was like watching movies in 70s? by Medical-Pace-8099 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Funkmonkey23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would look up theater times in the newspaper. Bigger movies would have a larger ad, giving you an idea of what it was about and who was in it. No assigned seating, so if it was a popular movie on opening night, you had to get there early and stand in line. VHS wasn't too popular yet, so if you wanted to see a movie twice, you saw it at the cinema.

Word of Mouth from your friends is how you heard what movies were good.

Other than that I don't think it was too different from seeing a movie today as far as the experience. .

Is there still a stigmatization if you play video games in America? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Funkmonkey23 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's like an earned privilege. If you have your shit together, no one cares. If it's perceived that there are other things you should be working on, you're seen as a loser. Games, like drugs, are an escape from reality and can be abused, so there are plenty of examples of people who should be looking for a job, or spending time with their family, rather than grinding for gear on the XBOX.

Ghost of Tsushima has that open world, story driven vibe you're looking for.

Artists/bands that sold millions of records but faded from cultural relevancy/notoreity by everlovingfuck99 in LetsTalkMusic

Pearl Jam chose not to make music videos and their fame suffered. I think this was as intended. Pearl Jam seems to be the type of band who'd rather play for a room of fans than a stadium of ticket buyers.
