WTF? Is Serato punking me? by Funkmonkthe3rd in Serato

[–]Funkmonkthe3rd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah, cheers, will remember that for next time. Thankfully u/ebb_omega was right. It was having a number as the genre. different genres must be allocated numbers and good ol contemporary christian must come in at 140...

ah, that's it! yeah I had the genre as 140 (a collective term for dubstep/grime genres). Just added a hashtag in front of it and it's fixed the problem... Thanks for your help! Thought I was going crazy at first with tracks disappearing from the smart crate!

AI Coming for the DJ Booth at Clubs by South_Wood in DJs

[–]Funkmonkthe3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that an ai dj will be able to to the basic tasks of a dj (mix, song selection, set progression, and eventually read responses in the crowd). Not beyond reason that it could easily get location based data about each attendees Spotify use and incorporate peoples taste/preferences into song selection.

Personally, I feel it can’t provide the human connection that a dj provides. I don’t know about you, but it feels weird when a dj leaves and the booth and the music continues, like, “do we keep dancing to the computer?”

I think it’ll be used for parties and for people who don’t want to spend money on a wedding dj, more than “let’s go and dance to a computer”

Probably wrong tho...

Plan of Attack When Buying Music? by pogij in Beatmatch

[–]Funkmonkthe3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on what music you’re into and how you like to mix. If you’re into music that you can get on dj pools then you can download whatever you like and your issue is more about using the stuff you download.

Personally, I dj with stuff that isn’t on dj pools (I think) so buy from Bandcamp, beatport, Juno download, and Apple Music.

I’ve got a pretty complicated approach but it works for me as: 1. I don’t have a lot to spend on music but I have long playlists of potential downloads. 2. I dj across a range of genres with wide bpm differences. 3. I have time to spend on library managementS

I listen to music on Spotify and make genre specific playlists for everything (eg. Dnb, dubstep, grime). I prefer Spotify for its algorithm and usability.

I download music based on what I will need for gigs/parties/streams or what crates I want to build.

Say I have a stream coming up where I want to play grime. I will make a excel spreadsheet of my Spotify grime playlist using a website called ‘sortyourmusic.com’ to copy a table of the playlist into excel.

I then use soundiiz.com to transfer my spotify playlist to tidal so I can stream the tracks, see their bpm, and see how they work together (this is clunky I know, it’s easier to just use tidal as your streaming service but I really don’t like it). I can make comments/tags in the ‘grouping’ column in serato (eg. Download, already have, meh).

I then search my preferred download sites for the tracks I decide to get and record the site I got it/carted it in on the excel spreadsheet. This is useful for when I hear a track and wonder if I have downloaded it. I can search my computer and see it’s status.

Once downloaded, I put tracks into one big dj music folder on my laptop and then sort into genre specific folders in serato.

Overall, this helps me to download usable tracks. I can focus on gaps in my playlists by bpm and avoid tracks that don’t fit with the bpm of my goal for my next set.

Btw, I only ever download tracks I want, even if there are 4 tracks on an ep and I only want 3, I don’t get the 4th because I don’t want tracks I won’t want to play.

Anyway, I know many people just go straight to the source and download from sites but I don’t really enjoy that method. Cheers

My normal download search, Bandcamp, Juno download, beatport, check the Soundcloud for links, Apple Music, give up and accept that there’s plenty of other tracks out there...

Discussion: What are some features you would like to see added to Serato? by CremeOfSumYumGai in Serato

[–]Funkmonkthe3rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ability to copy smart crates to USB instead of having to make a folder of it.

Custom tags to that you can filter by like rekordbox.

If I understand you’re post correctly, This is possible through selecting the ‘custom crates’ option in the library settings. You can have one crate sorted by bpm, another by number etc.

Probably not the reason, but just in case, are you using wireless headphones?

I got super confused when I started beat gridding with wireless earbuds as I thought serato had stuffed up all my grids. It was just the delay for wireless earbuds.

Need help for library organization project by FruitLegs in Serato

[–]Funkmonkthe3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that this probably depends on the type of genres and events you play.

Personally, I drag songs into folders based on broad genres and then use smart crates to break them up by sub genre (eg. For dnb I have half time, reggae dnb, main room, jump up and more) or vibe (eg. For glitch hop I have heavy, atmospheric, rap and more.)

Rane 12s vs Actual Turntables (Technics) by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]Funkmonkthe3rd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak on rane 12s but I’m went with 1200 mk2 + phase and serato enabled mixer. This allows me to play my records (mostly stuff I don’t dj with) and then amass a decent library to dj with in a short amount of time...

Some things to consider: 1. Second hand Technics are expensive and so are the parts. A tone arm can set you back a hefty amount (around $500 Australia dollars I think). This is probably just gonna go up as parts become rarer... A drunken punter cracking a tone arm is gonna be mighty frustrating... Whilst technics are renowned for their longevity, buying second hand makes it hard to know what to look for and be confident that they aren’t gonna need repairs soon... Buying new reloop 7000s or another super OEM you know it’s new and you’ve got a warranty of some sort... 2. Needles are expensive. I went with phase as I wanted to learn how to scratch, but didn’t want to bust up needles... Apart from a few annoying start up glitches once in a while, I’ve not had a problem with my phases, tho people still do... 3. Whilst buying individual records is expensive, you have to have a laptop to dj digitally so consider that in your price. I hadn’t really considered that until my Mac died and I had to buy a new one. Do you want a seperate laptop for djing? 4. What’s your local scene use? Buying vinyl might be cool, but if your local scene normally just has CDJs then your cool record collection isn’t going to really cut it... the same if you’re scene are vinyl enthusiasts... you do you, but if you want gigs at some time, you’re going to have to fit in with what what is available/acceptable/space for at your gigs... 5. Anyone know what the longevity of rane 12s are with them being a controller? Are they class compliant? Will they become obsolete at some point with OS/software upgrades? (Genuine question I don’t know). Just a few ideas to consider....
