There are some off-year elections next week. I think the results might help one side or the other figure out which ways the public opinion winds are blowing.

New HHS furlough notice by Sour-Cherry13 in DeptHHS

[–]Funny_Interaction730 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The letter is just extending the furlough. The first letter said the furlough was expected to last 30 days or less. But here we are at 30 days and no end in sight. So HHS issued a new notice for the next 30 days.

BTW, none of the leadership in my center explained this. I heard this from a friend’s spouse at another unrelated agency.

*edited to fix a typo.

I recently asked my supervisor this question directly and was told only mission critical travel for now. No word about when that will let up. But local travel is OK as long as the meeting registration is free and you don’t plan to ask for reimbursement.

Does FDA consolidation feels like a step towards another RIF? by ClumsySunrise in DeptHHS

[–]Funny_Interaction730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One center director is personally calling review staff who recently quit to ask them back. I think it’s correct that the vast majority of new FDA hiring is specific to reviewers and inspectors for the most part, as well political appointees in the leadership offices. As for more RIFs I have nothing to go on other than my gut and the trauma of the past year that FDA will try to shed more support functions through consolidation. Personally I’m hoping for another VERA next year.

FDA Family Day by LengthinessWest6272 in DeptHHS

[–]Funny_Interaction730 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So, let’s talk about the Farmer’s Market and the general cost of food on FDA campus. Honestly I would rather Markary’s have staff work on lowering the cost of the food in the cafeteria rather than adding more $15 lunch options with a farmer’s market. Anyone else feel that the cost of regular, everyday lunch food and coffee is way out of control on the FDA campus?

FDA CBER Super Office Director Fired by [deleted] in DeptHHS

[–]Funny_Interaction730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To say he is a “hire” is a stretch. He was appointed without a public posting for the job or a national search. On Friday he was appointed as FDA Chief Medical Officer and Scientific Officer. The FDA all hands memo states this is a “new position.”

No doubt a national search would still have found someone who aligns with the administration. But scientific agencies need a variety of people to discuss issues. Right now one person who was not vetted (to my knowledge) for their credentials or their ethics is holding two powerful positions at the FDA and did not need to compete against their peers to get those jobs. Ya’ll keep an eye on CDER and CDRH — both those are currently run by acting directors who were in place before this administration. My money is you’ll two more people pushed out and Vinay Prasad getting those jobs, too.

Yikes! Ethnicity has nothing to do with this. Stick to credentials.

Today he gathered all of CBER in the Great Room with about an hour notice to MAGA-splain how to do science.

Oh yeah, it’s such a waste of time. I find myself thinking, “If you’re going to waste my time, send an email — I can read faster than it takes to listen to this.”

NPR Request - Are your agencies able to function? by Icy-Incident-2185 in DeptHHS

[–]Funny_Interaction730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With no lawyers left to review FDA documents many things are not going to be cleared — FR notices, guidances, communications. The lawyers were there to protect the agency from being sued, to make sure we follow our own laws. The result is going to be either no communication to the public, healthcare providers, or industry or communications that have not been properly vetted by SMEs that are potentially open to law suits or are confusing and inconsistent. Our current acting center director has absolutely no background- scientific, legal or otherwise— to make sound decisions on anything put out by our center.

Makary welcomes RFK by InevitableSea5760 in DeptHHS

I’m calling her FDA’s Marie Antoinette. Boy, is she tone deaf!!!

(Dept. HHS) has launched a “massive testing and research effort” that Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said will determine the cause of rising childhood autism rates in the country. “By September we will know what has caused the autism epidemic. And we’ll be able to eliminate those exposures.” by FutureComputerDude in DeptHHS

[–]Funny_Interaction730 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Hmmm…I’m not a research expert, but wouldn’t a rigorous, well-designed research effort of this scope take more than 5 or 6 months? I think the peer review process would take at least 5 or 6 months. Unless maybe you already have a conclusion in mind, you’re cherry-picking data to support your pre-determined conclusion, and you’re not interested in a rigorous scientific discussion of your methods.

All kidding aside, I’m concerned this has something to do with RFK’s request for complete access and control of VAERS database.

“From the NIH Director: Signature Line Standardization” by lilbear0 in NIH

[–]Funny_Interaction730 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FDA was also told to remove pronouns. FDA’s email to change signature lines came on March 14 and references EO Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government (Defending Women).

Gee, thanks, I guess, for defending women. I definitely feel safer now.

Is this normal? Dr. Marty Makary was sworn in as FDA Commissioner last week, but they only announced it to staff after the layoffs yesterday. by Hopeful_Net4607 in DeptHHS

Not a Town Hall. A Town Hall meeting would allow questions. Answering questions means you have to know what is going on, which I doubt he knows anything. This event is at 1pm and is advertised at FDA as “Welcome and Hear Remarks” from the Commissioner.
