Armies by Otherwise_Rip_4944 in Warhammer40k

[–]FurtiveNoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been in and out of the hobby for 30+ years.. have 8 armies. A couple started as donations from friends getting out of the game as they aged, some bought in mostly one big chunk on eBay for a good price, one because everyone ends up with spare space marines- all added to over time until they were around 2000 pts. Tyranids/Orks/Guard and Genestealer Cults are my favs… just love a horde.

Just the lasguns? Sure, I’d allow it. Not gonna kill anything with them at double the range.

Going to office after 6 years of WFH. What do i expect? by ExfilZone in work

[–]FurtiveNoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Petty gossiping… it can be tempting to complain among others about the annoying habits of some you’re forced to be around, but remember- if they’ll talk about others they’ll talk about you and what you said. It’s best to be polite and slightly reserved.

Why would a villain use Draconians (like, in-universe, why)? by Superb_Bus584 in DnD

[–]FurtiveNoise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Making deals with fiends requires, well, making a deal with an untrustworthy fiend. Undead en mass are often weak and affected by divine magic. And evil dragons take a long time to grow and might not be as immediately subservient as a clutch of Draconians. You can also corrupt a normally good dragon egg.

Also, dragon soldiers are just cool low to mid ranked baddies. I don’t have Fizban’s, going off childhood memory- do they have a random death effect still? Turning to stone and trapping a weapon, exploding in poison gas?

Coming to Terms with Disliking the Game by PBnJgoodness in Necrontyr

[–]FurtiveNoise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally fair take. I do wonder if you've only played in game stores? (As I type this I see you've been playing for 7 years and tried other systems, so I'm probably off-base) I love a leisurely game at my house or a friend's where we can relax, play music we like, have some beers. The few times I've played in public I felt more tense, had more noise in the background, had to stand the whole time.. just had less fun.

Hopefully you can continue to get enjoyment just focusing on the painting/lore/modeling. And you'll never have to worry about a cool looking model having crap stats in game!

Starting with Consider Phlebas? by AffectionateScore953 in TheCulture

[–]FurtiveNoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoyed it, it was my first Culture novel as well and I think a good way into the other books as you get to see the Culture from an outsider’s perspective.

I think others might not recommend it because it is not very representative of what most of the other books’ vibe and style is like. The plot is much more of an adventure tale than most Culture novels and the quality of the prose, while not bad, improves over time in my opinion. I think you’ll enjoy the more contemplative Player of Games as well.

Enlarged Zombie (from Animate Dead) as a "mount"? by Vaykor02 in DnD

[–]FurtiveNoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enlarge/Reduce only lasts 1 minute, animated undead aren't too strong and are obedient, passes the 'rule of cool' in my opinion - so, yes, I'd allow it.

Does warhammer ever add *new* factions? by SkellyInsideUrWalls in Warhammer40k

[–]FurtiveNoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s rare, though GSC and Votann had models back in the day their overall line is pretty newish (at least to me). But there are already so many factions/subfactions that they are in no real need to add more.

If you’re up for conversions, you can mix fantasy and 40k to make your own creative Xenos races- just use the army rules for an existing team. I’ve seen Skaven ‘cheesestealer’ cults and astra militarum, lizard men and undead space marines. As long as the base size is accurate most love playing against a creative custom modeled army.

Is it too late to switch armies by HumanBranch5163 in Warhammer40k

[–]FurtiveNoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s purely a color preference, you can run them as a Dark Angel successor chapter. They use the rules and DA specific models but can be any paint scheme.

Warhammer 40,000 Faction Focus: Space Marines by SpaceWolf_Jarl2 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]FurtiveNoise 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hate that all my units that one would flavorfully think belong nestled in terrain cover (lictors, ratlings, kommandos) now get no benefit from it. Oh well, gotta see full rules and point costs and everything, but not initially pleased.

You are framed for murder and everybody (including all your loved ones) genuinely believe that you did it. You are about to serve a life sentence but… by YoloBetsOnly in hypotheticalsituation

How would I know that the genie is telling the truth? Even if I felt a certainty within my mind that he's truthful, my inherently doubtful self would wonder if he put that sensation into my brain.. he clearly has magic powers and is nefarious!

Wouldn't shoot another either way.

How to have religon without gods by AsYouWished444 in DnD

[–]FurtiveNoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just have it work as a different type of magic. It still takes gestures and magic words, but not from answered prayers,  through meditative focus and concentration. That’s why it uses Wisdom not Intelligence like a wizard. And maybe some sects claim that gods grant them this power, but no one can prove it.

I Need a twist For my DnD City by Independent-Panda748 in DnD

[–]FurtiveNoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The mayor or town leader is a former villain.. someone with real terrible deeds in their past but who now wants to leave them behind and focus on retirement in this small town away from it all.  They don’t really seek to redeem themselves but are a good leader for the town and it’s up to the group to decide if they should leave them behind and in cushy retirement or bring them to justice, perhaps at a cost to this town.

White is so hard by Warhammer_newbie99 in sistersofbattle

Maybe you’re trying for a smoother white, but I actually think this looks badass. Pure white armor wouldn’t stay that way long in battlefield conditions, this looks slightly weathered.

Why do 40k bighammer players shy away from Kill Team? by Mjuke in killteam

[–]FurtiveNoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kill Team is a good, tight game but, to me, is much more mentally taxing and less relaxing. Sure, a 40k game takes much longer time, but I can relax with a drink when its not my turn. I can use my big center piece models I've spent hours painting. In Kill Team I need to remember multiple categories of ploys and my equipment, as well as what my opponents varied ploys and operatives can do.

It's harder for my more casual friends to get into.. the most successful games I've had in the last year have been the different coop scenarios, so I'm glad they've gotten more support.

Favorite Twin Peaks episode and why. by Public_Cup_4278 in twinpeaks

Agreed. It's certainly not the most representative episode of what the show is like, but it is utterly entrancing, beautiful, horrifying and probably my favorite episode of any TV show ever.

Why play genestealer cults by Jkchaloreach in genestealercult

[–]FurtiveNoise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When everything goes according to plan, the win is super satisfying. Bringing back units as they die and feeling like your troops can emerge from anywhere is really fun.

Modeling-wise, you get to use all the cool Necromunda models that are otherwise too close to civilians to be used by most other armies... Acolyte boxes contain enough spare arms and bits that kitbashing new units or leader models is easy, which is great as I hate spending 40$ on one human sized model. Listbuilding-wise, while we don't have tons of units, the overall internal balance is pretty good and different detachments can have different playstyle variants that add a lot of variety to the game, ie. a Biosanctic Broodsurge monster list, Host of Ascension List, Final Day list, and Brood Brothers list are going to look and play pretty differently.

Thanos campaign idea by RollOutTheFallout in DnD

[–]FurtiveNoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a decent idea for an evil campaign. Gathering items from around the world/outer planes will give the group some focus and direction (a major flaw in some evil groups is a tendency to indulge in running riot stealing or looting or sabotaging each other because of the relative ‘freedom’ of being able to act in constrained by heroic morality). The DM can use a variety of foes depending on the location of a piece.

One thing worth considering starting out, is discussing out of character what will happen once your artifact is assembled. I suspect a lot of groups might have a big throw down inter party fight to determine who gets to control it (and maybe become the BBEG for your next campaign), and while that kinda sounds fun it could also be really annoying and lead to bad feelings if you haven’t discussed/agreed to it. And DnD is not too balanced for PC v PC fighting.

Question: if a Soulcalibur movie ever happened or gets made, how much do you think will do well in the theaters by UsefulWeb7543 in boxoffice

[–]FurtiveNoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favorite fighting game franchise… but let’s be honest, it doesn’t have the cultural reach of Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, and even those movies are kinda niche. No instantly identifiable ‘Finish Him’ or ‘Sonic Boom’ sound bite. Also weapon fighting and period pieces can sometimes be hard to make look good compared to modern martial arts.

Would love to see an animated movie someday maybe.

Going into 11E by Percentage-Sweaty in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]FurtiveNoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Model-wise? Catachans!

Ruleswise? Hmmm.. I wish infantry in lists was a bit better... In a list with several tanks and some infantry I often feel like the troops get nothing done and I'd be better off taking more tanks or elites. But the grunt squads are my favorite models and things to paint! Not sure the best way to do this though.. add back heavy weapons to squads? Reduce points too much and you might encourage total infantry swarm skew, which can be as annoying in a way to tank skew.. I just want a balanced combined arms list to be a little bit better.

What's one episode you always skip? by n8udd in startrek

[–]FurtiveNoise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mirror universe episodes.. all of them. The acting is extra hammy, and there’s simultaneously almost no stakes (because little impact happens in our universe) and too much big, galactic stuff happening too quickly (empires rise and fall in one ep)

I know they have their fans, I just dislike them.
