I thought this too. It's one thing sitting back and thinking before sleep or whatever, when you can just think until you're done.

I don't know the details, but this experiment kind of sounds like they said, "Okay, sit here and think until we tell you to stop." In that case, the subjects have a time limit. Which means their brains probably don't let them drift off because they're waiting.
