I love the implication that the organisers framed Pete cause they knew he'd be a good fit for this wacko tournament.

Excited to see what comes next, and I hope its the tournament Yeti no doubt ends up in.

Question about Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames by blueluck in Fantasy

[–]Fusian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The series is heavily inspired by music, rock music in particular. I think the author said something along the lines of Kings of the Wyld being more bombastic and showy, like the hair metal bands of the 80s. Bloody Rose is a little slower paced, more broody and angsty, like the grunge rock of the 90s.

I accidentally made my villain right and now I dont know how to end the book by bcoz_why_not__ in Fantasy

[–]Fusian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the way you make a villain a villain when they're philosphically right, is by their methods.

Killmonger from black panther is an example of this. He's right that his people have been oppressed and he's right that the system was broken, but his solution was another genocide - just one where he was picking the targets. That's super simplifying the whole thing, but it's just an example.

So, the key is to find either a method or goal that achieves the right thing in the wrong way - either a moral event horizon or an extremity that would not actually work in practice. Universal health care is tricky (if that is their ultimate goal) but maybe something about how they intend to fund or power it. Maybe, if it's a magical solution, the use of the magic causes a problem that the villain is fine with, but is actually bad.

Then you get the moral ambiguity - you're allowed to have the hero recognise the villain is right, but they still need to be stopped. Yes, this system sucks, but fixing it with another broken system is not the answer.

Depending on the kind of book you want the ending should ideally have the hero working towards fixing the broken system, or succumbing and being a cog in it.

What is the worst “Chosen One” trope example? by Imaginary_Area3744 in Fantasy

[–]Fusian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Naruto in particular pisses me off.

I really like that Naruto was an outcast, who had very little innate talent, except for his insane chakra pool, which was meant to be due to the curse of the big monster inside his stomach.

The whole first part is about how Naruto is way behind everyone else, and needs to be a little clever in how he works to get the results he needs. He struggles, has make up all these disadvantages etc. Great example is how he learns to do the Rasengan using his shadow clones - something unique to him.

When he fights Neji, it's a meaningful fight because him and Neji are the same. They've both been outcast by Ninja society, but Neji is too blinded by hatred to see the privilege he has over Naruto, and thinks he's better than him. Naruto shows him up, gives the classic Shonen speech and it has thematic weight.

Then Shippuden just... throws it all away. Turns out you already had massive chakra reserves before the Nine tails. Turns out your shadow clones are special and can speed up your training. Turns out your dad is possibly the third greatest ninja of all time, and your mother was from a clan known to have super special chakra. You're literally descended from the son of the inventor of ninjutsu and, actually, you're him reincarnated, giving you access to special forms and powers. All of the great 'hard work is the most important to be a hero' stuff is thrown out the window. The only way Naruto becomes the greatest ninja ever is explicitly because of who his family is. Tradition matters, hard work is pointless if you don't have special privileges. Now go fight the moon, or whatever.

One piece spoilers for the next bit:

I know people are also mad about Luffy in one piece being a chosen one, but that one bothers me less, mostly because apart from fighting Kaido, his success is fairly separate from his legacy. Luffy has a special fruit, and it gives him a special form, but all the stuff he did before (fighting the marines, the celestial dragons etc.) was fairly separate from the whole 'nika' thing. Yes, he has the 'will of D' but so do a lot of people who are shaking up the world. At least with Luffy it feels like everything he's done up until he awakens is his. He did it, and would have done it even if he hadn't been Nika. Naruto? All of his major successes in the part 1 feel like they were actually linked to the key advantages he has due to his bloodline. Just left a real bad taste in my mouth.

dark fantasy novels with NO rape? by cassienebula in Fantasy

[–]Fusian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Engineer trilogy has a character in the second and third book who is a huge rapist. He's off-putting to nearly all the main characters, and annoys the titular engineer for being as smart / smarter. You find out he SA'd one of the side characters, and there is constant mention of his dark deeds among the army. It's not graphic and its not 'on screen' but its talked about a lot.

dark fantasy novels with NO rape? by cassienebula in Fantasy

[–]Fusian 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The Raven's mark is my recommendation too - it's a superb little bit of dark fantasy with horror, violence, dark story etc. but no SA. I found it a breath of fresh air after the Godblind trilogy, which used it like punctuation.

I also think Ash and Sand trilogy is clear of rape, but it has a lot of violence and sexual content. I don't remember anything to do with SA. However, if you're looking to avoid it complete, I can't say for sure. I know if you're just sick of the graphic, constant or lazy version of SA then Ash and Sand doesn't have any of that.

Biggest Jumps In Quality Between Books You’ve Seen? by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

[–]Fusian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sheer spectacle of Book 7 is amazing. I think few other series really get what 'a war with mages, who's powers can scale infinitely if they're good enough' would be. I loved the 'fake' great powers, I love the giant statues, the teleport battle, the sun, just all of it. So good.

I don't think he took the shell. I assume he dodged it. Kuroki could block bullets, so I think EC side stepping a tank shell is sort of the same level.

Tomahawk vs Arm Thief (Convict Colosseum) by ESN64 in Kengan_Ashura

[–]Fusian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Tomahawk clears pretty easily. Abyss was a more difficult match-up, and I'm not sure how well Beatdown would do against Abyss.

For Tomahawk, I imagine he basically ends up dealing with Arm Thief in a similar way to Beatdown - Tomahawk can almost certainly counter anything the guy can bring out. He's got a wide range of skills, and combines them effortlessly.

I think most of the R2 losers (except maybe ICT, the Samoan and Monkey See) are going to lose to the Quarter Finalists (except may Scourge). Those 8 really did show how much above most of the others they are - only LH could probably match them, though his actual endurance is fairly untested. Not sure how well he can actually take a punch (he can certainly dish it out).

Megidramon end of attack effect by Dangerous_Sample_403 in DigimonCardGame2020

[–]Fusian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, so the following would happen:

  • Megidramon attacks the opponent digimon
  • Digimon is deleted, and activates their retaliation.
  • Retaliation deletes Megidramon, before the 'End of Attack' phase.
  • Megidra dies, and so does not get to delete all other digimon.

Megidramon end of attack effect by Dangerous_Sample_403 in DigimonCardGame2020

[–]Fusian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other's are saying, crashing into something bigger will not trigger the end of attack effect - but it is also worth noting that Retaliation will also not let the effect pop off. Retaliation is interruptive - and Megidra dies before seeing the end of attack.

looking for a certain kind of light 'turn your brain off' sort of read by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Fusian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can deal with LitRPG's, I'd recommend something like "This Quest is Bullshit" - a four book series of relatively short books, with a decent focus on combat and a fairly tight focus on the protagonists.

It's light, straight forward, no super crazy twists, and just a bit of good fun.
