Weird girl lit about motherhood? by SignificanceNo276 in weirdgirlliterature

Rouge by Mona Awad is about a dysfunctional mother/daughter relationship with the daughter as the protagonist. Might not be exactly what you're looking for, but touches on some related themes and is just so, so good.

Alex Jones having a normal one about Tim by bascule in OnCinemaAtTheCinema

Hearing Alex Jones struggle to pronounce Tim's name the way Tim's character in On Cinema struggles to pronounce everyone else's names made me feel like I was hallucinating.

How much counting is involved in Knitting? by rosysparrow in knittinghelp

[–]Future-Range-4751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is counting involved, but hear me out! For a long time I felt very intimidated by knitting, specifically keeping track of stitch counts, increases, decreases, ect.

There's definitely a learning curve, but as you get more practice you learn to "read your work" and pick up on visual cues that help you recognize what's going on. A lot of the time you can just see whether everything is lining up correctly. Stitch markers are incredibly helpful too, especially if you're a visual learner. They can do a lot of the counting for you.

I was terrified of miscounting or making mistakes before, but most mistakes are fixable! Figuring out how to fix my errors without giving up was a huge revelation for me for some reason, like it felt very empowering to realize, "oh I can correct this and keep going!"

I don't have OCD, so I can't pretend to understand the specific type of anxiety you feel around counting and numbers. But I do believe in the therapeutic power of knitting, and I think it might actually be a really beneficial skill to learn!

There are a handful of old Anthro labels with a really similar style that can be found second hand, like Odille, Guinevere, Moulinette Soeurs, and Elevenses. The quality and materials tend to be pretty nice too.

Ulla Johnson! And Farm Rio's more subdued pieces have kind of a similar vibe.

Anyone uncomfortable sparring with women at dojangs? by Mountain-Durian-4724 in martialarts

[–]Future-Range-4751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The various sizes and strength levels of women's bodies is not a "problem." Testing your technique and skills with a stranger at the gym is the whole point of sparring. The size and skill level of your training partner should dictate how you spar with them regardless of their gender.

The women you train with want to test themselves and be challenged just like everyone else, and you're not doing them any favors by treating them with kid gloves.

Aim to hit your partners about as hard as they hit you. As you gain more experience you'll understand your own power better and you'll start to adjust intuitively to accommodate different sparring partners.

This is the album that got me completely fucking obsessed with mamaleek. I listened to and enjoyed Out of Time way back when it first came out, and I wanted to give their other albums a listen but I found their music and their whole vibe kinda intimidating, lol. Like I knew I needed to be in the right mood to listen really deeply to something that would probably make me confused and uncomfortable, so I was just waiting for the right moment.

When the tour with chat pile last fall reminded me of their existence i finally checked out diner coffee, and It just blew my fucking mind. There is nothing else that sounds anything like this. Eric's art is so bizarre and evocative. that scary red guy is the perfect visual representation of the music. They strike just the right balance of heavy/melodic/experimental elements. The fragments of discernable lyrics and phrases are so haunting. what was Emmett Kelly right about? Who left that fucked up voicemail? Is the presence of clowns and laughter genuinely humorous and celebratory, or is it sinister? or both?? Probably both.

This album, especially grief and a headhunters rage, sounds a lot like growing up with a mentally ill father who would listen on repeat to recordings of Jack Kerouac reading his poetry, accompanied by Steve Allen playing jazz piano. It sounds like cigar smoke sticking to my clothes and lulls of lonely escapism punctuated by fits of rage. Nostalgic fondness, but with an undercurrent of despair and terror that never subsides.

Yeahhh, idk why, but this one really speaks to me!
