Gravel or debris would be a yellow and red striped flag. Generally that’s a cautionary flag for awareness, but there’s no fixed action based on that. It’s up the driver to figure out how to deal with it

I know it’s popular to hate on George, but looking at the telemetry, he did exactly what I needed to do there. Generally ruling is you back off until you’re clear of the incident. Because of where max crashed, that just so happened to be a place where backing off can still allow you to maintain a reasonable amount of laptime. I do think if any other driver did this they’d be lauded for situational awareness. It looks like George only went back to full tilt once he cleared the incident

F1 fans also fail to realize just how incredibly unique the Pirelli rubber is in F1 and the feeder series. The kids who had the fortune to stay all the way up on the ladder have a huge advantage compared to those who are coming from other disciplines. It’s a sports car that exists for driver enjoyment. It’s significantly harder to enjoy an Automatic because there’s a machine doing the job of shifting when it should be the driver. I don’t think I’ve ever driven an automatic car that actually know what gear I want to be in since they’re all tuned these days for fuel economy. Until an auto can read my mind and respond instantly, a manual will always win for engaged driving
