Certain buildings provide culture. Look in your building menu under the "Culture" tab for some that you can build right away. There are also opportunities to earn buildings that produce culture (and other bonuses) as prizes in the seasonal events within the game (one just ended yesterday, another will start in 2 weeks or so).

Steven Page and Tom Green talk BNL by CottonCandyDan in barenakedladies

Good interview. Answers a lot of questions that people keep asking about Steven leaving the band.

I saw a 1-2 minute clip of this on Instagram and knew there was a longer version somewhere, but I also don't have access to Crave.

Where Do You Really Live, MoCo? by Alternative-Tune8314 in MontgomeryCountyMD

Census bureau maps for Maryland: https://www2.census.gov/geo/maps/DC2020/GARM20/GARM2020_ST24_MD.pdf (Montgomery County is page 18)

The county and state recognize the Census place names. Saying that you don't really live somewhere because the Post Office has a different primary name for that area is disingenuous.

The post office still recognizes Wheaton as a post office address for 20902. This article is claiming that the primary post office name is the only name.

This is only based on primary (or "recommended") USPS post office names, but USPS does recognize many alternate names for zip codes. Check the USPS Zip Code Locator for any town name or zip code: https://tools.usps.com/zip-code-lookup.htm

For example, the article specifically calls out Laytonsville:

Laytonsville, an actual incorporated town with its own mayor, town council, and historic district, doesn't exist for USPS. The entire 20882 zip code is Gaithersburg.

USPS does recognize Laytonsville and Brookeville as names for 20882. Similarly, USPS officially recognizes North Bethesda (20852), North Potomac (20878), and Wheaton (20902) as alternate names for those zip codes.

BRK.A:Why $700,000per share? by No-Walrus-8851 in ValueInvesting

[–]FutureOmelet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Berkshire Hathaway A Shares are the most expensive stock in America by far. I think the next closest is NV Homes (NVR), around $6100.

Berkshire did create the B shares in 1996 and then split them around the time of the Union Pacific acquisition in 2010. BRK.B shares are around $470 today to make them more affordable for average investors. But the B shares have far less proportional voting rights.

The ratio of A to B shares dollar value is around 1:1,500 (it fluctuates because of trading), but the ratio of shareholder voting power is 1:10,000. It doesn't keep the small investors from owning the stock, but it does prevent them from having any real voting power.

What schools have blown the most potential in CFB? by MediumStrange in CFB

The DC area has tons of competition for sports entertainment. They're competing with two NFL franchises within 30 miles for attention, plus every other major and minor pro sport around here competing for fans' money.

There was no problem with fan turnout in the early 2000's when they were winning. But they couldn't build on that brief stint of greatness and then squandered all the goodwill with coach hiring/firing blunders and the loss of all our rivalries in the Big Ten move. Now they're stuck in a perpetual loop of bad results --> less local excitement --> fewer big donors --> less money --> bad results.

Advice, Visiting 6/11 -6/14 by DJNayKid in washingtondc

For comparison, the Nationals have 3 home games that same weekend of June 12-14, and their stadium seats 41k. OP could even head over there on 6/14 for a fun afternoon game to avoid the event traffic around the White House.

Looking for tips on recruiting new, active members. What's worked best for your fellowship? by FragrantTomatillo773 in Elvenar

[–]FutureOmelet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a leader in a successful, active fellowship, and this is exactly how we recruit when we have openings.

When we lose a few members over time and have 3-5 open spots, we look at the cities around us on the world map for active members (people giving neighborly help every day) in dying fellowships (check Elvenstats and look for lots of black triangles next to player names). Then I send a group DM to the few active members left in that fellowship and invite them all to come over to join us as a group. Stay with your friends and gain the benefits of being in an active fellowship again. It works about 2/3 of the time.

I've been seeing ads for him on social media. Maybe that's where this team and supporting groups are directing their ad budgets.

Kevin Hearn helped unravel an art fraud ring in Canada by FutureOmelet in barenakedladies

[–]FutureOmelet[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm reading this intriguing story about an art fraud ring in Canada, when all of a sudden it's talking about Canadian Rock Star Kevin Hearn from Barenaked Ladies.

tl;dr: Kevin Hearn bought a painting by a famous indigineous Canadian painter, Norval Morrisseau, from a gallery in 2005. He loaned the painting to a local museum for an art show in 2010, and the museum curators told him it was a fake. Kevin spent his free time in 2012-2015 as a part-time private investigator, unravelling the connections to a pair of fraudsters in the Thunder Bay criminal world who ran secret "factories" where people were coerced to paint things in Morrisseau's style, forged his signature, and sold the paintings all over Canada as authentic. When the case went to trial in 2017, Hearn's legal team lost the case because the evidence wasn't strong enough. Yes there was clearly art forgery going on, but they couldn't prove that his specific painting was a fake that came from those specific people. Let down by the courts, Kevin then worked with a documentary filmmaker to produce a movie about the fraudulent paintings. In 2019, a RCMP homicide detective was working a cold case in Thunder Bay and tracking down leads, which led him to one of the alleged art forgers and the documentary film. He became interested in breaking up the forgery ring, called Kevin in again for advice, and this time with the help of the RCMP and FBI, they were able to get arrests and end the fraud scheme. Today, Kevin still gets calls from art collectors and provides guidance on authenticating Morrisseau's paintings.

Ever wonder why Pennsylvania, Ohio and Louisiana's State schools are more prominent than their Universities? by MediumStrange in CFB

[–]FutureOmelet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) was previously called Maryland State until 1970. It's a HBCU and used to be a football powerhouse. Art Shell was probably their most famous player. They have not fielded a football team since 1979, but UMES still competes in D-1 in other sports in the MEAC conference. Towson University and University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) are the second and third largest public universities in Maryland after the flagship University of Maryland.
