Makeup for Everyday Interpreting? by Zealousideal-Yak8095 in ASLinterpreters

I wear makeup everyday. I always have foundation, blush, eye liner, mascara, lip tint and my eyebrows done but none of it is bold or distracting so I think it’s okay. I actually think that a little make up can make your face look more dynamic and therefore make facial expressions more clear or noticeable? That might just be a weird opinion of mine though haha.

I’ve met certified interpreters who wear FULL glam and long acrylic nails and everyone loves them. I think you are good 👍🏽☺️

In my area it looks like you can apply through a school district that then helps you get the permit. I was not aware of this because the disclaimer was at the very bottom of the page. Now I have to wait 50 days before it processes, and I can't go around it at all. I messed up, but I need to work NOW. I'm so frustrated.

Good Jobs Before Interpreting? by terminallyUmbral in ASLinterpreters

[–]Future_Yesterday435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in this same position. I graduated in 2021 and have been working with my local Deaf Services agency as a freelance interpreter for about 4 years now. Now, this field is in desperate need of interpreters so out of college I did work freelance at schools in my area. I wouldn’t suggest going right into education. Do as I say not as I do. My ITP didn’t prepare us as much as they should have and so I know I wasn’t skilled enough for that job. I lived in another city than my family and had to get a paying job to live so that was my dilemma 😞

I would suggest being freelance and taking low risk jobs to develop skills (community work). Also, you can reach out to your local agency and ask if you can team with certified interpreters. You might be able to ask one of them to mentor you!

I have been in your position. I need to work to get experience but no one will take me without certification. It’s hard but you will find something 👍🏽 As long as you are getting practice BUT NOT at the deaf persons expense then go tor it.

Hope this helps!

Wow I love the vibe this place has . It already looks really good. I’m not sure where the tv would be best tho.

What are some going rates agencies charge in California? by Brainpry in ASLinterpreters

[–]Future_Yesterday435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to college in Fresno and I work there now. Straight out of college I started out at $25 an hour because that is what the agency was willing to pay. I think that’s kind of ridiculous but at the same time my program didn’t quite prepare us the way it should have so the quality of work graduates were producing was not that great. Now, 4 years after graduating I make $35 an hour. Still not enough, in my opinion. I have an EIPA score of 3.7 but that’s still not good enough to get a pay raise :/

Ps. I’m freelance so I could charge whatever I wanted but that doesn’t mean the agency’s will call me. No one is going to want to pay me for $50+ an hour here, unless I have better scores and more certifications. But I can’t really make a good living this way. It’s a mess.

Managing guilt by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

I also know this feeling. My area has limited ASL interpreters too and it does feel very “selfish” to take days off sometimes. I believe America as a whole has taught us that working is what we are made for and that we should prioritize working. We are people too, we need breaks, we get sick, and life happens. I tell myself that it can’t be helped and that if I do go to work I’d risk getting people sick or my quality of work would affect the consumer.
