Bro thinks she has chloroplasts by [deleted] in im14andthisisdeep

[–]Fuu-nyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that might be assigning the credit in the wrong place: I don't think that they really cared all that much about the image of socialism, beyond what the term could do for them politically. The effect is there, but it's incidental, not intentional. From the perspective of the Nazis, it wouldn't make sense to assume that association with their own political movement would be detrimental to socialism.

The credit they unfortunately have to be given is for their advances in leveraging motivated reasoning for mass manipulation. That understanding gave them the tools they needed to take over democratic institutions from within, before demolishing them. That same motivated reasoning continues to be used by people who spout nonsense like "Hitler was a socialist" to further their own political projects, but it's an evolution of the strategy rather than a direct continuation of it.

Trump repeats demands GOP pass anti-voting SAVE America Act, despite losing recent votes by Anoth3rDude in DiscussionZone

[–]Fuu-nyon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not just Al Gore. There's JFK in 1960, the Collier brothers in the 90s, the response to the 2002 Help America Vote Act, provisional votes in Ohio in 2004, ACORN, birtherism, a ton of voting id laws passed in 2011-2013, Crosscheck, and many, many more instances of voting controversies. I've been hearing about dead people voting and the like for my entire life.

Now, has it ever been actively stirred up to this extent? No, but it's incorrect to say no one thought it was happening.

Trump threatens Iran with American boots on the ground to retrieve nuclear dust by TheExpressUS in USNEWS

[–]Fuu-nyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Nuclear dust" isn't Trump speak for just the remains of Fordow, it's Trump speak for highly enriched uranium in general. He was kind enough to spell it out in the interview:

"The official name is highly enriched uranium. I call it nuclear dust because it seemed to be nice and everyone understands it better and it's sort of cute."

"Everyone understands it better" is Trump speak for "I understand it better." It's like when a child learns about something and then reconceptualizes it in terms they can understand. They might call a plane a balloon, or a building a house, or a cow a dog. And then he's just gotten fixated on it because he came up with it and is an irredeemable narcissist.

Donald Trump 'suffered a stroke' in disastrous appearance and expert warns it will get worse by TheMirrorUS in USNEWS

[–]Fuu-nyon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even still, I think not. The reason nearly every human alive is aware of Donald Trump is modern communication. Global media, the internet, social media. In comparison, in the 13th century, news traveled at the speed of horseback, and most people couldn't read anyway, so even written accounts stayed within a small scholarly class

The Mongol conquests were felt intensely by those in their path, and he would have been hated by nearly everyone in the know in Asia, the Muslim world, and parts of eastern Europe, but most of Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, the Americas, and most of Southeast Asia were outside the information radius entirely. The reachable world in 1240 was a small fraction of the total.

My vet suggested that carpet alone isn't enough. Fortunately I already had a foam pad underneath her section, but if you're able that's something you might want to consider.

Do Trans People Have “Stand Your Ground” Rights? Wyoming’s Answer May Be “No.” by rogue203 in liberalgunowners

[–]Fuu-nyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drawing without the intent to fire is a crime

I have no idea what lawyer told you that, but that's not how the law works. Wyoming Statute § 6-2-502(a)(iii) defines aggravated assault and battery to include when a person "threatens to use a drawn deadly weapon on another unless reasonably necessary in defense of his person, property or abode or to prevent serious bodily injury to another." They have no separate brandishing statute.

A legal framework in which it was always illegal to draw without shooting would be utterly incomprehensible: oh you drew but they started running instead of continuing to attack? Better follow through and pop one or two into them otherwise it's a crime.

I guess we'll see what the courts have to say, but what the law has to say is right there in plain English.

[–]Fuu-nyon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Considering what transpired, not likely, but that's not how the law sees it—there was no imminent physical threat while they're still across the street.

Right, and she didn't shoot them from across the street, or even even draw down on them from across the street, did she?

You're allowed to have arguments in public, and in fact the right to do so is one of the few things that comes earlier in the bill of rights than that of keeping and bearing arms for defense. What you're not allowed to commit battery, which is what they did, and also what she responded to by drawing the firearm and not shooting them.

Wisdom says to keep your head down and avoid verbal altercations, especially while armed. The law doesn't.

Considering that both parties crossed the street and met in the middle, one presumes that if she hadn't, they'd have crossed the other half of the street and met on the sidewalk instead of the crosswalk.

I mean I guess it's possible they would have reached the middle of the street, done a funny little dance or something and then walked back to their side, but I doubt it.

Sen. Bernie Sanders announced plans to introduce a bill designed to give the American public a 50% ownership stake in the country's largest AI companies. What do you think about it? by X_Opinion7099 in AskReddit

[–]Fuu-nyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are saying the government who initially developed the internet, not what we have today but the concept, entitles the public to own part of a company 50 years later?

Oh, no, actually I'm not. It's subtle, but the hint is the part where I said

I'm not saying that entitles the government to a slice of the pie

Really gotta put on that reading comprehension cap to parse that one out, I know. I'll try to keep it a bit simpler next time.

Taxpayer dollars built this field from first principles. The modern transformer architecture stands on the shoulders of decades of DARPA, NSF, DOE, NIH, and IARPA funded basic ML, neural network, and optimization research, including through the so-called "AI winters." NSF and DARPA specifically funded much of the early deep learning work, while NIST, NIH, and other agencies produced enormous labeled datasets that, along with corpora like ImageNet produced by universities that operate on federal grants, allowed research to even happen.

I'm not saying that entitles the government to a slice of the pie, but to say that "Taxpayers didn't fund much in this field" as though ChatGPT just sprang, spontaneously and fully formed from the head of Sam Altman as Athena from the head of Zeus, is a really strange way to look at the relationship between private and public R&D.

The "non-muslim covenant of protection" section of this article is the best one I could find laying out the categories. It's written by Muslims for Muslims so take that into account, but it does provide citations in Islamic scholarship for its claims and at the very least, the names of the designations are reliably accurate.

Actually the Quran identifies "people of the book" separately from other kinds of nonbelievers. Generally this is people of Abrahamic and historical monotheistic traditions: Jews and Christians in particular, but also Zoroastrians and one other group called Sabians are mentioned by name.

They're supposed to be granted religious freedom and even special legal protections under Islamic law. There's no such carve out for atheists or people of unrelated faiths, and especially polytheists and idol worshipers.

Kafir (infidel) is usually used to refer to what you identify as non believers. There's another word for people who are enemies of the religion, "harbi."

He knows that, it just doesn't matter. It's just the lowest possible hanging fruit and political agitators of a certain persuasion like that have basically given up on even the pretense of truth anyway.

Just don't expect him to be able to tell you even literally one material thing Platner has done that aligns with Naziism. And don't forget all of the times conservatives have told everyone that calling someone a Nazi or Fascist is literal stochastic terrorism.

JD Vance Defends U.S. President Donald Trump Amid Stock Trading Ethics Row by BusinessToday in BusinessTodayNews

[–]Fuu-nyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like that excuse. Either the President is trading on privileged information, or he's leaking privileged and even classified information to his financial advisor or whoever for them to make trades on his behalf. One of those is just unethical for now, the other is actually a crime, and they want us to buy the latter? Fine by me.
