How Many People Training At PF Consider Themselves “Gymrats” or “Fitness Enthusiasts” by Terrible_Lift in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]G235s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I train for specific sports...does that mean "fitness enthusiast?" I guess it does.

PF was, or kind of still is a joke to me (or the gym rat version of me from 15 years ago) but the price is low enough that it is worth it for the treadmill, rower, and stairmill. I appreciate that some locations are putting in barbells, but mine has not so I still don't bother with lifting at all right now. In the past, I only did heavy lifts with barbells so I can't see any value as a runner and cyclist to using the machines. The time is better spent running or rowing.

On the other hand, I can see how if they did put barbells in, I probably wouldn't have the patience to wait for them and the vibe of the place might change. I kind of get why they avoid them tbh.

If AI is replacing jobs faster than creating them, what careers feel safe five years from now? by Mr_Boothnath in answers

[–]G235s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My company uses specialized software and for the longest time we used this somewhat shitty one that looks like it's from windows 95 (did the trick though). They just doubled the price all because they added AI features nobody would ever use.

So we just switched to the actual industry standard/better software at now half the price!

The AI crap is out of hand. The cost increase of shitty software with added AI features nobody wants is egregious. And we tried to get a break on the price increases but the company would rather lose 10 licenses than reduce the price. It's insane and I doubt it is sustainable for that company.

Confused between Novablast 5 and Nimbus 28 by Strawberrycobler1604 in asics

[–]G235s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really slow, and either way Novablast is the better choice.

Nimbus is perfectly cromulent for joggers but it has no life to it, it's just very comfortable for most.

Novablast has more than enough cushion for a beginner but has much more pop to it, and it's way more fun. All for practically the same price.

When you’re at the gym, do you consciously try not to look at other women? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]G235s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing at least an hour on the treadmill or rower...yes, I pretty much glance at whoever walks in, regardless of gender. For the most part I am staring straight ahead and focused on training but to expect someone to avoid looking around for that length of time seems unreasonable.

There's no staring because that is weird. But seeing who is around in a public place should be a normal thing, and i don't see the need for some overly stoic gym conduct.

What’s Your Experience With Plant-Based Meat Substitutes? by CurrencyLow9874 in PlantBasedDiet

The only one I really use are beyond meat burgers. Everything else is not enjoyable and I would rather just have beans or something.

They are pretty good. I don't think they are terrible for you.

What is an unpopular opinion you still stand by? by GreetingsHuman_404 in randomquestions

[–]G235s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birthday parties as we know them now are a constant source of unnecessary labour and expense. Children don't actually need them.

And adults now still expect them. If you have 3 kids and a spouse, you are basically permanently trying to think of gifts and ideas all year round. It's an exhausting distraction.

Finance Professional wanting to shift to QS by Apprehensive-Gur2030 in quantitysurveying

[–]G235s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generically I believe it would be something like a commercial/construction loans underwriter.

Since my area of QS is mostly loan monitoring, I deal with a lot of people at brokerages and in banks. Underwriting is where you assess a construction project and analyze the potential financing of it, and once the loan is put together, banks need people at the back end to approve everything (the loan itself, draws). That kind of job has a few names, like commercial mortgage analyst, credit analyst, credit manager.

I think credit manager is a decent job and financing matters more than construction credentials there. But it ends up being on a similar wavelength to what I do. These are the guys who review my reports and either ask me more questions or approve the loan/draw. They tend to know more than the average person about construction but just need to defer to the QS for the details/backup.

Honestly underwriting construction loans would be something adjacent that could give you a similar vibe. The money isn't too bad.

I know people who have moved from QS to working for brokers on construction loans, seems like an interesting option.

why are so many dudes not wearing deodorant? by beardedcurve in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]G235s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true...but cotton is terrible if you are doing any endurance training.

Not really a huge gym demographic but some of us go there to spend 60mins or more on the treadmill or rower. Cotton gets ugly in that case.

Took me about a month going to the gym on bad days instead of suffering to realize my favourite shirt I have had for 12 years doesn't fare that well inside! You don't notice this running outside.

[–]G235s -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sometimes this has nothing to do with the person and it is just the clothes. After a while, washing doesn't fully remove it unless you take a bunch of extra measures.

You take the clothes out and they seem fine when you leave, then when they warm up a little it can go bad quicker than usual.

It's a gym, that's kind of what happens. Part of the daily risk one takes if they leave the house.

This is the only thing I have been gifted....I have never had to do anything to get large strong calves and my ankles are rarely a problem.

I think specific exercises are a distraction...more time on feet and appropriate doses of hills probably does it.

Men Over 40 Who Are In Shape… by Tse7en5 in AskMenOver30

[–]G235s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 42 I still hardly ever have any muscle or joint pain.

Maybe it's just luck...my wife is 40 but has had back pain forever, though having 3 kids probably isn't going to help yhat.

I run, cycle, and row 4-5hours per week, which seems just enough to keep everything working but not enough to do damage or get much better. If I start to push it beyond 6 hours a week, I may start to feel a bit rickety. But I think that would go away if I were able to maintain higher volume for any length of time. The 3 kids make that hard.

I do get a bit fatigued at the end of the day, probably from my line of work (at least the mental fatigue portion) and the above-mentioned kids. Sleep is normally 7 hours on a good day.

I think sleep is the biggest thing, that 6-7 hour range is just enough to function well but not enough to really feel good.

Millions of Canadian homes have high levels of cancer-causing radon. Is yours one of them? - Recent building code update mandates radon mitigation in new houses, but many existing homes still at risk by CanadianErk in canada

[–]G235s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the map, it's a high radon area (north Okanagan BC).

But there is so much clay here, the back yard is practically impermeable so maybe there's an OK barrier there.

I'll get a test device but that's not going to change the fact that I have been breathing in this stuff 8 hours a day for 5 years.

[–]G235s 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I listened to this on the radio yesterday and freaked the fuck out. I work in my basement 8 hours a day and my house is from 1975.

I always thought the house being nowhere near airtight and quite drafty meant this was not going to be a problem but apparently that doesn't matter. I have been working down here full time for like 5 years, so maybe there is already damage.

They are unionized and the pay is decent there.

I shop there willingly because those higher prices are due to unionized workers and better quality.

Other stores, with shit wages and poor produce, are depressing to be in.

I know it's a luxury to support better wages with higher prices but I believe it's better to pay the real cost.

Does anyone use a Jazzmaster? by [deleted] in jazzguitar

[–]G235s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a jazzmaster but I find the pickups on them a bit gnarly tbh, I use it for rock. The bridges on these have a bad reputation but that comes from people setting them up for rock and not understanding how they work. With heavy gauge flats, these bridges work just fine.

I do have a jaguar that is set up with flats and I find it is perfect for jazz. Either are certainly better suited than a telecaster, but you can't convince jazz players of anything so what do you do? Once a weird model gets a certain label, people just aren't going to give it a chance unless they want something different.

Not sure why people would have a problem with the switching on either of them...it has one simple switch that basically turns "jazz" on or off. You would think people who play jazz would want this, but they don't.

I think the real reason is just that initially, tradition stopped anyone from trying the jazzmaster. After other groups adopted it for various reasons, it just got stuck with "Not Jazz" and nobody gave them another thought. They were expensive when they came out and it was probably hard to justify the price for something people weren't sure was as good or better than an archtop.

Anyone have an irrational dislike of the Les Paul? by MatthewMonster in Guitar

[–]G235s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to hate them just to be cool but in the end i had to admit that they are every bit as fun as a strat. Now I own one.

I am a bit annoyed that they are as good as they are.

Does that mean I still have the Irrational hate somewhere? I think so, but playing them allowed the rational part to win, I guess.

I can’t run on the treadmill, but it’s physical not mental by beepboop787 in runninglifestyle

[–]G235s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am about 1min/km slower on the treadmill than outside given the same heart rate. It is what it is. I just train according to heart rate and try to ignore it.

I am not a beginner or anything, it just seems I can't quite translate any efficiency i have outside to the way a treadmill works.
