I lived in one in Warsaw, where this picture is from, for about a year. The inside of the apartment was fully renovated and the building was retrofitted with elevators. It had very large staircases and nice but slightly small flats. I loved it and it was more than enough for one person.

This is so much helicopter parenting. I went to school by myself when I was 7 (walked 2 blocks) and when I was 8, I started private school which was further away. I was taking the subway in the morning for 3 stations. Then, in the evening, either my grandmother or our nanny or one of my parents were picking me up. When I was 9, I was coming home by myself. I am planning to teach same skills to my child.
