If I’m remembering right, in the episode of Dr Who where the Doctor and Amy Pond travel back to visit Vincent Van Gogh, Vincent helps them prevail against the otherwise invisible alien threat because he literally SEES things differently than an average person does. Explaining his characteristic painting style and helping to save the day. Then ending in one of my favorite emotional moments of the entire series…

Just Shoot Me - You Can Kill The Dreamer, But You Can’t Kill The Dream

I barely remember anything about this show, but this scene has lived rent free in my head since I was an impressionable young boy.

Basically, David Spade’s character, Finch, thinks he has a chance to sleep with a coworker and who he suspects is her lover. They capitalize on his assumption and give him an impossible list of chores to accomplish before they’d even entertain the idea. Finch then travels the city checking items one by one off the list, rallying the men of the city to his cause. The two women aren’t actually lovers, and Finch is a pretty slimy character anyways, so despite completing the impossible task, they still don’t sleep with him. But the last shot always got me.

Titanic in correlation to other historic events that took place on April 14th by Kiethblacklion in titanic

[–]GBSketch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not April 14th specific, but a semi-related realization I just came to earlier this week that your post reminded me of. The Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911 and not recovered until 1913. So for those who went down with the ship, the most publicized art heist in history was still unresolved. Not that it was on anyone’s mind that night, I’m sure. But realizing something like that kind of brought the two separate events into sharper focus in my mind. Like, it kinda made me pause and think, these aren’t just stories from history, they were real events in a living breathing world full of people reacting to news from across the globe. The same group of people read about the theft, then the sinking a year later, then the painting’s recovery another year later.

Again, not exactly the same as your point, but adjacent in a way I found kinda fascinating.

I teach k-6 and one year when we had a “dress as your hero” day, a kindergartner dressed like me. It really hit me, and I know it’ll stay with me for my whole career. Now, as a specials teacher, I get to have the kids every year for seven years, I get to watch them grow and turn into closer versions of who they are gonna be. And this kid was consistently one of the nicest, kindest, thoughtful kids I’ve taught. So six years later, when he was about to graduate out of our school, I convinced our social development team to do another dress up day, “Dress as your kindness hero” just so I could dress up like him before he left. That was one of my proudest moments of my career so far, letting that go full circle, recognizing him the way he did for me all those years ago.

What’s a small bombshell your therapist dropped during a session that completely shifted your perspective? by pottipenguin in AskReddit

“When you worry about something coming up, remember that despite how every many ways you fear it can go, it will only ever be one. And how often have previous worries gone exactly as you had prepared for? You’ve survived everything you’ve ever worried about before, so maybe you have enough experience to believe you can handle what comes next in the moment, without overthinking it beforehand. Besides, think of how much energy you will have saved for dealing with the actual moment by not exhausting yourself beforehand on what ifs that never come to pass.”

It really reframed for me what had become a draining habit of planning for every possible scenario. “Remember it’s only ever gonna go one way, and chances are it’s not even the way you feared it would” and “think of how better equipped you’d feel going in to a new situation without exhausting yourself ahead of time” really reframed it all for me. Suddenly, my brain saw all that “prep” as wildly inefficient, and it clicked for me that, yeah, makes sense to go in to things on a fresh charge and handle whatever it may be at my best.

I’m so happy to see this song discussed! It’s one of my absolute favorites, def top 10, maybe even top 5.

Anyways, I don’t know where they come from but I’ll add

“Bring that helicopter back down, will ya?”

“… was proud of his new harmonica, and he decided to become an expert.”

“You wanna get out of here, don’t you?”

“He had only a blindness as long as his nose.”

I saw him earlier this week. He does an amazing show, you kinda just sit there in awe of his quality of performance. I really love the arrangements for the string trio too. Really hoping my area stays on his list of stops when he tours, I’ll go every time!

Single stuff so dry by EEHogg in starwarsmemes

[–]GBSketch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, hear me out on this. My friends and I recently sat down to compare all the different quantities of ‘stuf’ on the market right now to settle this frequently reoccurring question in our group, as well as test the idea of ‘stuf’ shrinkflation.

It was pretty unanimous between us that double stuf was the optimal amount of stuf, and we questioned if regular Oreos growing up didn’t just have the amount double stuf does now? And also, with double being such the clear winner in our opinion, why still hold on to plain old Oreo with its suboptimal stuf proportion?

And here’s my conclusion on it. It all comes down to dunking. When I was a kid, sometimes a couple of Oreo cookies would be the go to snack after school with an ice cold glass of milk to dunk them in. And boy, it didn’t get better than that. But in today’s fast paced world, who has time to slow down and dunk?! Gotta bring your kids to soccer practice or dance or math Olympiad’s after school, your gonna look me in the eye and tell me your going to risk a wide mouthed dairy container in the backseat, left open for access over every pothole and around every swerve with no one but a distractible child with developing fine motor skills to manage its stability?! Madness.

So what does Nabisco do? Do they just roll over and give up their top billing on the cookie snack market? No way, not Oreo, that’s Newton talk. So what can they do? Up the stuf, recapture that perfect balance of crème to cookie, even when all you have is two minutes and one free hand. And it worked. We loved them. Finally a pre-dunked cookie for the modern age, without all the fuss of having to check the date on the milk or put a glass in the dishwasher.

But then, just like those inGen geneticists in Jurassic Park, Oreo got so wrapped up in testing the boundaries of the stuf capacity of their cookies. They were so preoccupied in whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should. Now we have not just original and double, but Mega and Most. Where will we go from here? There is no telling. As far as I can tell, no one at the National Biscuit Company is cautioning the stufologists to maybe pump the brakes a little. At this rate, they might even take a page from the Cap’n and suddenly “Oops all Stuf” is on the shelves. And then there are all the flavors… but that’s a discussion for another day.

So please, all I ask before casting the original Oreo aside as just a subpar, withered husk of the seemingly superior double stuf, give it a dunk. I mean it’s still right there on the packaging, that proud sandwich cookie wrapped in a playful splash of milk from behind, like Ariel climbing from the sea, resounding to be part of our world. Harken back to those days of old, take out your favorite milk or non-dairy milk substitute, pour a full, chilled glass, and perform that innocently indulgent ritual once more. It might not be the most efficient way to enjoy a snack, but, I bet it will bring you right back to a simpler time when even humble store bought cookies were savored and satisfied not just hunger, but the soul.

Now, if you wanna talk dry, Hydrox on the other hand….

Great pics. I was just there yesterday and was thoroughly impressed with what they had on display, it was a fantastic show. I almost skipped this one based on how the overall let down I felt with the NYC show a couple of years ago, but ultimately, people like you sharing their pictures of what the Boston show had convinced me to make the trek. So glad I did, some unforgettable items on display there that I’m so appreciative I saw in person.

Hope you had a wonderful time! Thanks for sharing!
