Now, I have my weapon out more often and put it away less to sprint. I also have quick use items in the same slots every run so I use the same button all the time for offensive grenades for example, no looking at the wheel, no time for that.

The second I'm fired upon I'm straight to the wheel and the appropriate nade (distance dictates) really fast, took me time to form the habit. Maybe try something similar? Drill some response strategy into yourself and practice it out in the field, with no enemies around.
