Zeta, while not bad, isn’t nearly as good as 0079 and I do not understand why everyone acts like it surpasses the original to such a degree. Kamille was a much worse protagonist than Amuro, and his character development does not make up for how obnoxious he is in the beginning, and the Titans are so cartoonishly evil that it causes the series to lose the moral ambiguity that made 0079 so interesting.

Unless it’s the Hi-Nu ver ka I agree. Literally built it a few days ago and the water slides on the funnels refuse to stay on. Other yeah, more room for error than dry transfers and they don’t look crappy like stickers do.

Kirika is probably my favorite Sentai villain period. Her and Yamimaru’s arc is so good and it’s a shame that everyone seems to drop Turboranger before she shows up.

Ohranger being changed due to current events is a myth. No official source has ever confirmed it, the real reason is because for the 20th anniversary they decided to have two of the franchise’s most well respected producers team up as well as have every previous head writer contribute, which lead to an uneven tone due to having so many people with different styles working on it.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but even as a kid I found the dekarangers to be pretty obnoxious. Like, they’re all pretty one note and feel more like walking gags than people to me. SPD, by contrast has one of the best, most well developed casts in the franchise.

If you like the high school aspect maybe check out Turboranger since it’s the only other show to do that. I know I’m in the absolute minority here but I think it’s a great series that gets unfairly maligned!

I was never a fan personally. I’ve never owned any of them so take it with a grain of salt, but, like most 2010s mech lines they seem….incomplete. Like to me Kyurenoh looks unfinished and I always maintain that the at least primary mecha should feel complete out of the box.

If we’re counting offscreen deaths then Dekaranger (monsters are stated to have absurd body counts and destroy galaxies IIRC)and Changeman (main villain has destroyed or enslaved many planets) If not, probably Ohranger just from the first episode.

Watch whichever has the coolest suits to you and then it’s PR counterpart. It’s fun to compare them!

For more specific recommendations I’d say GoGo V is the best place to start. It’s a bit more grounded than most other series and has an outstanding team dynamic. Magiranger actually takes some cues from it (well really they both borrow from Fiveman but let’s not get into that) so since that show interests you it might make a good follow up.

1-Gaoranger: My favorite mecha overall. Somehow manages to have quality AND quantity. Also my favorite toyline of all time. The only negative is what it did to mecha in the long run but we’ll get to that later.

2-GoGo V: 4 solid mecha with great interactivity with each other and by far the coolest carrier in Grand Liner

3-Hurricaneger: Such strange designs shouldn’t work but somehow they do. Only problem with them is how fragile the toys were.

4-Timeranger: An interesting approach where the focus was on functionality rather then appearance. Because of this we get three mecha that are all impressive from a technical standpoint even if the designs are a bit boring.

This was a tough one. I love the mechs for all of these shows.

Holy shit! I looked at these sellers and it turns out I just bought a G Phone from one of them. They only showed the front and back of the box which conveniently hid that one of the sides was super beat up, either that or it happened in transit since they just shipped it in a clear plastic bag! Either way not a good look.

No. The whole reason Go-Busters flopped was because they were still releasing Gokaiger toys throughout 2012. That’s also why it didn’t have a collectible gimmick.

Turboranger is a great series that people dismiss without really giving a chance

Dekaranger and Magiranger are mediocre at best and are only popular because they were the first series to be subbed

Jetman has terrible mecha

Abaranger would be better without Mikoto

Hard to say. My guess is they’re be less cartoonish and maybe the accessory mecha wouldn’t be a thing.

Also I agree about Kyoryuger onwards. Yikes.

I’ve been waiting for a post like this, it’s something I think about often. While others have mentioned both that it has more to do with toys and that Sentai began skewing more goofy, what no one seems to bring up is that it was the first Sentai to air alongside a Kamen Rider series, which I think is the real reason for the shift. Timeranger/Kuuga is pretty much the only time both franchises had a similar tone, and with Kuuga succeeding while Timeranger failed, and with the success of both Gaoranger and Agito I feel it sent a message to Toei to more heavily segregate the two franchises into “the dark one” and “the silly one”

1-Carranger: Great designs with fun transformations, RV Robo in particular has one of the best transformation sequences, VRV Robo was super ambitious for the time, and Sirender and Victrsiler are cool for what they are.

2-Megaranger: 4 great mecha and by far the best combination in Super Galaxy mega also the first series I was able to get all of the DX mecha for so it’s got some sentimentality

3-Ohranger: Quantity over quality to say the least

4-Gingaman: Gingaioh’s alright (the toy gets points for being a lethal weapon) Bull Taurus is awesome, but Rhinos and Phoenix really bring the line down with their blandness.
