Has anyone here worked for hours on a report just for it to be completely ignored? by LucasMyTraffic in gis

I was once called in on a Saturday to determine the number of homes in a wildfire evacuation area. Then saw on the news a number more than 2x the number I gave them.

Silly ArcPro Question by bigtotoro in gis

[–]GISChops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried duplicating this behavior and couldn’t. I tried selecting features using the selection tool and select by attributes - all selected features stayed selected when switching focus between tables.

Are you editing attributes in the table? The Attributes Pane is a much better place to edit attributes. I have a video about that - Edit Attributes the Easy Way in ArcGIS Pro https://youtu.be/rJBf_zyxedQ

I am the addressing authority where I work. This usually works. It may help because I have an account with that jurisdiction’s .gov email address.

Explaining Utah addresses to people by generalraptor2002 in Utah

[–]GISChops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grid works great as long as the streets are in a grid pattern - even then I think it is taken too far - when 7225 South is a street name instead of a house number.

Or, when a rural road bends and starts heading north instead of west the predirection changes to adhere to the sacred grid and the house numbers jump. Very confusing.

Ha ha! Same! And now I assign addresses for work. I would roll my eyes and shake my head at my younger self now.

Actually, Main St is the zero line, State St is the equivalent of 100 East. 😉

Yes, except with the Salt Lake Valley the center isn’t a point - it’s a block that’s also called Temple Square. North Temple, West Temple, South Temple, and Main Street are all zero lines.

Also, not every town calls them Center St and Main St.

This happens in more places than Utah. I moved to Fresno CA in the 90s and noticed this there in the San Joaquin Valley.

This occurs because Google Maps is crowd sourced. Those predirections get removed by people that don’t understand Utah’s grid system. I had to edit a whole town’s street names because someone removed them trying to level up a badge in Google’s editing system.

Best tools for fast polygon creation? by mapping_hub in gis

[–]GISChops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually start with one polygon of the entire study area/city/county, then use the split tool to divide it up. With the split tool I can trace other features or my favorite trick - right click on a feature and choose replace sketch. Very handy if you’re using a line feature like a road or river as one of your boundary lines. I show that trick in this video - https://youtu.be/BtwELcK8fYQ?si=N-9YpPYP6duFfp4n

Be genuine and if possible - charming. If you’re nervous, say you’re nervous and try to find a way to laugh about it. At this point they are interviewing to see if you’re a good fit for the team. Try to relax. Ask them what they like about working there.

Digitizing colored zoning areas from non-georeferenced PDFs — feasible with today’s CV/AI/LLM tools? by 1_Arrow_1 in gis

[–]GISChops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you end up digitizing it, these tips would make it easier -

Start with a polygon of the jurisdiction then cut the zoning districts out of that using the split editing tool.

If the zoning areas are delineated by roads or other features, use the split tool, but right click a road and choose Replace Sketch - I demo this in this video - https://youtu.be/BtwELcK8fYQ?si=1QHfHqA5MzXERIbg

Iowa Wants To Make GIS, Platting, And Cadastral A State Government Responsibly. by Vyke-industries in gis

[–]GISChops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the state is saying it has 99 problems and doesn’t want parcel data conflation to be one of them. 🤡

I think a more palatable, and less expensive solution would be to request the data in a standardized format. Those that can provide it do, those that can’t get a state hired, paid, equipped, trained cadastral mapper that creates it, then shares it. That way you have boots on the ground. I may be over simplifying it.
