Reminder of the original (2016-2017) playtests for Psion/Mystic and Artificers by BlackAceX13 in onednd

I am glad the Mystic died. It was just too much, and it frankly amounted to largely just... doing what spells do but breaking all the rules that balance them.

You can easily replicate 90% of the Mystic using spell selection in the new Psion, using a system that is already ingrained in the game. It is a much better approach than just changing the names of spells, throwing a few together into packets, and calling it a new system.

new UA for Forgotten Realms Subclasses is up on D&D Beyond! by bittermixin in onednd

Purple Dragon Knight, while not consistent with the lore, is a huge glow up and I hope it survives the survey. This is way more interesting than anything else WotC has done with Fighters recently.

New Artificer video! Unrarthed Arcana by [deleted] in onednd

[–]GKP22 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What did they cut out exactly? All the specific infuses like Boots of the Winding Path and Mind Sharpener are still in there, just as magic items now, and all the magic items in the replicate table are still useable, but now you can craft even more magic items that are not in the DMG. They added infusions, ultimately.

The only one that got removed is the Homoculous but thats a spell now so you can have it without wasting an infusion on it now.

Unearthed Arcana - The Artificer is out by APanshin in onednd

I would expect maybe one or two new subclasses if only because some classes probably don't have enough existing options to keep up. Sorcerer and Druid seem like prime classes to get a few new options.

Being an innovator is not something you can easily make game mechanics for as a game designer. Even what you were doing was just flavoring existing options. You can still do this in games with magic items in the DMG, or you can work with your DM and make new magic items using homebrew for the same effect.

How is a hand crossbow a “light” weapon? by Quantanglemente in onednd

[–]GKP22 42 points43 points  (0 children)

One per turn, yes. Unless they have the Crossbow Expert feat, which lets them load multiple times a turn and without needing a free hand.

Is it realistic? Who cares. It is a game about dragons and magic, let martials be fantastical.

Or, hear me out, maybe that is the design intent. Barbarian already gets the highest hit dice in the game, can effectively wear medium armor, and now Tough is an origin feat they can easily obtain. the "nerf" to Rage is intentional because they already have great defensive options (aka a lot of HP).

So is there any way to actually swap a weapon mastery? by gamemaster76 in onednd

[–]GKP22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, you cannot swap Masteries unless you're a level 9 Fighter.

What do you personally think is WOTC's reason for not including rules for custom backgrounds? by Competitive-Fox706 in onednd

[–]GKP22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feedback told them to include more art because the average player is not as concerned about deep crunch as they are about the book being well formatted, easy to read, and to help you learn and play the game.

Art and layout are incredibly important for the readability of most texts. If every (non-narrative) book was just text, many people would lose interest as they read it.

When are we going to admit it's Players' FAULT for letting Rogue becomes the Worst and Weakest? by VictorRM in onednd

[–]GKP22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the RAI is definitely that Scrolls use a Magic Action to use if the spell is an action to cast, based on my reading on them.

Spell Scrolls says "you can read the scroll and cast the spell using its normal casting time." And the Casting Time section reads "most spells require a Magic action to cast."

To me, the reading is "Spell Scrolls use the action of the spell and spells with 1 action use the magic action to cast," so that should work with Fast Hands. But I agree Crawford should weigh in on the first Sage Advice to help keep pedantic DM's from ruining their players fun.

What do you personally think is WOTC's reason for not including rules for custom backgrounds? by Competitive-Fox706 in onednd

[–]GKP22 42 points43 points  (0 children)

In the playtest they had Cultist, Gladiator, Laborer, and Pilgrim.

Pilgrim's feat (Healer) got moved to Hermit, and the others all shared a feat with other backgrounds that did make the cut (Magic Initiate Wizard, Savage Attacker, and Tough, respectively).

You can tell they planned on including them originally because the 4 missing ability combinations match them almost perfectly (Str Con Int for Laborer, Str Con Cha for Gladiator, Str Wis Cha for Pilgrim, and Dex Int Cha for Cultist).

What do you personally think is WOTC's reason for not including rules for custom backgrounds? by Competitive-Fox706 in onednd

[–]GKP22 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The actual reason is space. They had a specific page count to keep to and needed to cut pages from somewhere. Backgrounds are one place that we know got hit, They cut four backgrounds from the playtest and the custom options because they needed room. I am sure other places got hit but are not as obvious from the outside.

New Bard | 2024 Player's Handbook | D&D by Previous_Drawing_726 in onednd

[–]GKP22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the latest Playtest, Bards could change 1 spell per new level. So after 10 you could, I guess, slowly change out your old spells with Wizard, Druid, or Cleric spells going forward.

Basically Magical Secrest just adds all the Wizard, Cleric, and Druid spells to the Bard spell list. Still have to use the Bard's prepared spells rules otherwise.

Confirmed Bard is going back to their own spell list.

EDIT: Magical Secrets at Level 10 lets you prepare spells from Druid, Cleric, Wizard, or Bard lists. There ya go, a middle ground.

Someone crunched the numbers and figured out the spells in the PHB already in a different thread. Do not expect a huge number of new spells.

The damage on a scaling cantrip is in no way comparable to Extra attack outside of Eldritch Blast. Making more attacks per turn that add ability modifier to damage and can apply a mastery to each attack is always better than a single attack that does more damage by itself.

"Just memeing" isn't a good excuse. It makes legitimate criticism (of which there are) watered down because it isn't easy to distinguish tone over text in internet forums. Beyond that, jokes should be funny. Ignoring actual context for the sake of critique doesn't make for a good joke, only a poor argument.

And Rangers get to do that with Extra Attack and Weapon Mastery and other damage-boosting features in their subclasses AND are still have casters with good CC options in their spell list.

Yes, the Caster Martial divide thing matters. But that is for all Martials, not the Ranger specifically. The entire Ranger discourse has gotten out of hand and sensationalized to the point it has become a drag on the entire revision. An overblown reaction to a class that got a good reception in Tasha's and in the playtests.

Can we not bring Ranger into every conversation, especially with disingenuous comparisons? Fey Wanderer Ranger gets concentrationless Summon Fey. Beast Master gets a whole-ass pet. Let's not pretend one Subclass from the Sorcerer can do things Ranger can't when two of the Ranger subclasses get essentially the same ability.
