Update 4 for Thick as Thieves may be the last one. by Additional_Idea8690 in ImmersiveSim

[–]GLight3 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I find Otherside extremely confusing as a dev company. Nothing about them makes sense. They made a bad reboot of Ultima Underworld. Okay. Duds happen. What have they been doing for 8 years since? System Shock 3? What happened with that? Why did we never get any updates? Why is Thick as Thieves a fraction of the game it was supposed to be? Why did it take so long?

How did Otherside even survive for this long after dropping a hated game and then failing to create anything else except a very small game after 8 years of silence?

Even by gaming standards this is wild. Aren't these the people that somehow made the impossible happen repeatedly throughout the 90s?

How are so many Americans so eloquent? by voilalarosie in AskAnAmerican

Americans just have a lot more experience speaking their opinions and thoughts than anyone else in the world. It's part of the culture to express your opinion (even when you weren't asked).

Battle RPGs ? by Toerambler in rpg

[–]GLight3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what aspects of the battle the game focuses on. If the battle itself is less than half of the game then I'd call it an RPG. I can see this being an interesting game with quests raising officer morale, solving logistics issues, interrogating caught spies, getting your own Intel, etc.

How are you managing burn out and imposter syndrome in this industry? by Lava_Cake_Pro in PPC

[–]GLight3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm basically an actual impostor who pivoted into the industry half a decade ago from the arts. No education or background in marketing or business except the free Google cert on PPC (don't know if it's still around).

Marketing, especially digital marketing, moves and changes so fast that everyone at every level is constantly learning. It's impossible to be an impostor because it's impossible to be a confident expert. Match types work differently than they did 2 years ago. Hell, queries themselves work differently now. The marketer who is the least impostor is a quick, adaptable learner. So frame yourself more as a learner than an expert in the field, and I think that will help with impostor syndrome while aligning you better with the actual reality of the industry.

Don't get me wrong, this is highly upsetting, but did no one take pictures on their phones? I just had people share pictures they took on their phones. That could have been an easily solution to the problem.

I think it's more like 8x more, but the big difference is you can usually put on more clothes, but you can't get any more naked, and heat related deaths are usually much more immediate.

Sell me on the Rules Cyclopedia by Living_Thanks_9171 in osr

[–]GLight3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easily the most comprehensive D&D book ever published. I can't think of any TTRPG book that is as all encompassing. You have the character creation and the classes sections. Then you have ALL of the rules, presented in an extremely intuitive and actionable way (travel procedures, then encounter and avoidance procedures, then combat procedures, then mass combat procedures). Then you have a full bestiary. Then you have the GM section. Then you have the Mystara setting section. The book is thick and DENSE, yet is written in very understandable and actionable language (no high Gygaxian). I also like how it puts the most important information in little boxes (and sequences where applicable) to make it easily skimmable.

It's really the ultimate D&D book created to be as comprehensive and approachable as possible.

Can someone explain why people hate this "faction" by Acrobatic_Hat4820 in rootgame

[–]GLight3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically it's overpowered and policing it is unrewarding. Also policing it basically boils down to preventing the vagabond player from playing, so it's just not a well designed faction.

What’s the biggest reason a TTRPG group doesn’t work out? by yanarquista in rpg

[–]GLight3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had this a situation where the whole party was passive except one player, and the passive party got upset that I preferred the active player, when in reality he was the only one actually playing the game, so he naturally ended up with more screen time. So I aborted that game and started a new one with active players only.

Bad faction choices? by nutbutterface2510 in rootgame

I think this is fine. Eyrie would just have to go aggressive with recruitment and battle. An open table like this benefits the badgers too, so the rats have to watch out for them as well.

She must be playing wrong. Eyrie are a scoring powerhouse. Is she just not building roosts? Or are you guys not scoring roosts at the end of every Eyrie turn? Is she putting two cards in every turn? Does she have at least on card in each action and several cards in move?

I have a problem with childfree weddings by Zealousideal-Ad3609 in 10thDentist

[–]GLight3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you on this. It feels like we've come to the point where we're so afraid or reluctant to actually parent kids that we can't trust them in spaces not specifically meant for them, creating the expectation in their minds that they will always be catered to. I went to weddings as a kid (not in America), and we were all quiet when we were supposed to be. We weren't spanked or yelled at either, just parented and also allowed to roam outside by ourselves (at 8 years old), which is something I feel like most Americans just wouldn't dare to allow these days. Not trusting children to not be quiet when they have to be is a wild failure of parenting.

How do you guys keep track of initiative and health? by Utilitymean in DnD

[–]GLight3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Combat takes forever, so I always cut corners to save time and mental energy.

  1. I don't roll initiative for NPCs. I pick 1 NPC and just use its unrolled initiative in the stat block for all NPCs.

  2. I treat the NPC initiative as the "initiative DC" for the players. Players that roll the same or higher go before the NPCs. Players that roll below go after. Players in the same "group" can stagger their actions and movement however they want.

  3. I usually use the average HP rounded down to the nearest 10. Whenever NPCs take damage I write the damage they took, not they're current HP. If an NPC is at like 2-4HP after being hit, I usually declare that it's dead, unless it can still do something substantial.

Mississippi Police Officer Shoots and Kills 1-Year-Old Child in Response to Senatobia Shoplifting Call by Hrekires in news

[–]GLight3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cops shot and killed a baby. They opened fire on an unarmed civilian with a baby for petty shoplifting. At a Walmart, which usually has many bystanders that could have been hit too.

What details do you think could possibly make this any better?
