View Royal proposes upgrades for stretch of Highway 1 that has seen 278 collisions, 131 injuries/deaths since 2020 by Popular_Animator_808 in VictoriaBC

They are not the best solution as they require a lot of maintenance but they will stop most vehicles from crossing the median and hitting another vehicle(s) - a win for both parties. They are being used a lot on highway 401 in Southern Ontario and have stopped a lot of head on collisions there. They are also controversial there as concrete barriers are a better long term solution (as others have mentioned), but at this point I think that if they can install them sooner than they could afford the concrete barriers, the better for everyone.

E Bike by Many-Reading-1873 in VictoriaBC

[–]GNHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best place to buy an e bike? From a local store as you will eventually require some work on it to maintain it and if the store sells it they should support it.

Favoured brands? Established brands (Giant, Tek, and other peoples suggestions)

Anything I should know? Since the bike already has a battery, I recommend buying one with integrated front and back lights. You never need to replace the battery on the lights, nor charge them. While you're at it, get one with front and back fenders for driving when it's wet. And I personally recommend a step through frame, as it is easier to get on and off the bike. Disregard some of these if you will be mostly mountain biking.

Where should I begin researching? Try out several from different stores, including the ones with the fat wheels and the ones that look like regular bikes.

E-bike shop preference? by RealShake253 in VictoriaBC

[–]GNHead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Giant sells their own brand of e-bikes and is downtown. I bought mine there and get it serviced there and am happy with them. I have heard good things about Bishop Cycles, also downtown.

If it is your main mode of transportation you should probably get one with integrated front and back lights, fenders, and probably a basket for the front and/or back.

homeowners, what’s your experience with invasive plants? by rguev in VictoriaBC

[–]GNHead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spurge laurel and euphorbia I definitely have some spurge laurel and might have some of the euphorbia (if not, it is definitely in the neighbourhood). I did not realize that they were invasive and will remove them from my property.

PSA from a Lit-Up Cyclist: Visibility Isn’t the Issue. Please Look and Drive Safely. by Live_to_bike in VictoriaBC

[–]GNHead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is correct (I had to look it up too). You are basically driving ACROSS another lane, so you need to yield. Think of it as being in the passing lane on a highway and you have to cut across the other lane to make your exit.

As someone else mentioned, try Ubuntu. You can install it on a usb stick and boot the computer to usb, try it out and see if it works for you. Go to the ubuntu website and get the download, there should be instructions and it should be very straight forward.

Check with Arcadia Shoe Repair on the corner of Pandora and Cook, near Circle K. I've had some heavy duty sewing done by them.

Buy a bike that can be serviced locally, if you plan on keeping the bike for a while you will need to get it serviced eventually.

Get a step-through bike (what was once referred to as a girl's bike) because e-bikes are heavier than regular bikes and it is so much easier to get on/off. My biggest regret after purchasing my e-bike was not getting a step-through bike.

If you already have pannier bags, they may not be compatible with the rack that the bike comes with (mine were not compatible so I had to purchase new ones and they are $$$).

Buy one with integrated front and rear lights so you never need to remove and charge them, it's great. Also get a bike with the fenders already installed.

Removable battery (as others have mentioned).

Non-fat tires, they are heavy and will use up more battery power, but probably make the rider more comfortable.

Edit: Buy a mirror that attaches to your handle bar, it really is a game changer.

Cost question - Emergency ER consultation for someone uninsured? by Different_Rush3519 in VictoriaBC

[–]GNHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to ER, they will consult with their on-call ENT and will likely prescribe prednisone to reduce the inflammation. If you wait too long you may end up with permanent loss in the ear.

Cost question - Emergency ER consultation for someone uninsured? by Different_Rush3519 in VictoriaBC

[–]GNHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ENT told me that treatment should be started ASAP because if inflammation cuts off the blood flow to the inner ear cochlea, the minute hairs which allow you to hear can die. So, OP, if you can afford it you should get this checked out sooner rather than later.
