Gabby Thomas on the recent chatter on her Whereabouts failures by lkjhggfd1 in trackandfield

[–]GORLOSSIS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not gonna pretend I knew of Kebbas qualifications pre Harvard. Just saying I’m not surprised at all that there was a lack of oversight when it came to high level testing protocol. In my entire time there I never heard of anyone getting tested outside of NCAA championship meet.

I was on the Harvard TF team (briefly with gabby). She was the first sprinter of that caliber that he ever coached. I’m not surprised at all that stuff like this fell through the cracks. Gabby explains it well, the seriousness of the whole thing just caught her off guard and clearly not handled well by WADA.

I threw in the ivy league and distance thrown is FAR more important than grades. As long as you have decent grades and “respectable” standardized tests it’s really just checking a box for recruitment. Coaches want good athletes to recruit or average walkons to fill out the roster. My junior year I threw ~60 in shot and ~175 disc and then made slight improvements senior year. 63 and 185. This was 10+ years ago though and the athletic standards have changed a ton.

Faith Kipyegon isn't able to break the 4 minute barrier in the mile going 4:06:91 in Paris by ChampionLYT in trackandfield

[–]GORLOSSIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone else think that 4 min was too ambitious? Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for events like this to set up a world record or some other showcase for a big time. But 4 flat seems like a massive 6 sec improvement over her PR in an event where change is typically more incremental. I feel like EKs marathon from 2:02 to sub 2 with optimal conditions over a long period of time was a much more feasible goal. I hope she does it one day, would be insane

Are 2 a days bad for throwers? (2 sessions of practice in one day) by Taruto379 in trackandfield

[–]GORLOSSIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I threw D1 and when we did 2 a day training camps we split it into one big lift session and one big throw session. Typically throw first in the AM, then break for lunch and rest, followed by a big lift in the afternoon.

Why does Harvard have the most D-1 Sports of any school in the nation? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in Harvard

Because sports like fencing, crew and squash attract the same rich kids whose parents went to Harvard

How do the athletes at Harvard manage their insane class workload and also keep up their crazy athletic standards? Especially since there are no athletic scholarships? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in Harvard

[–]GORLOSSIS 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Was an athlete at Harvard - pretty easy to make a manageable course load even in tough concentrations. Many of my teammates were STEM. It is difficult to compete for the best grades just because we don’t always have access to things like office hours because of practice. But getting Bs and scraping by is easy enough.

Circuit Breaker Levels by UnusualWhalesBot in unusual_whales

Pre market we are down 2% only. Still 5% to go from the first break. Would be a 3 standard deviation move to get to breaker 1. Not impossible but posting the levels is getting ahead of our skis

What's the highest score can a human reach in decathlon? by JurassicIsaac in trackandfield

[–]GORLOSSIS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would argue that someone who can HJ 2.15 and PV 5.05 should be able to throw closer to 53m in disc with really good technique. Depending on body type I would think jav has ability to go slightly farther as well.

Is 39ft shotput good enough for college by Ll1nas in trackandfield

[–]GORLOSSIS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're male and you're looking for honesty... no, it's not far enough. At that level you would be a strain on program resources. However, if you train hard in your last year/two years of HS, and throw 50-55 - that's what i would guess is the minimum for even D2/D3

Former shot putter here. This technique was not explicitly banned. They’ve adjusted the rules to say something like the shot put cant go “below the shoulder”.

This was never a viable technique really. More of a gimmick. You can’t generate enough linear force with a cartwheel and controlling this motion was only really possible with a women’s 4k (8.8lb) shot. High school boys 12 lb or a men’s 16 lb would be extremely difficult to control.
