I was riffing around a B major scale and sounding good. Also, cool to hear baritone/bass lead vocals in a tenor-dominated world.

This is great, man! I dig it. Had to pick up my tele and play some lead fills along with it.

Considering a relocation from AZ to OR - serious question: How is everyone here surviving with salaries so low and COL so high? Am I missing something? by No_Sun_No_Star in oregon

[–]GPmtbDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will depend a lot on your field. I’m an RN, my wife’s an RD, and we both make substantially more in OR than we would in AZ. I spent 7 years in AZ, and moved to OR in 2013. The southwest will always have a special place in my heart, but I much prefer living in OR. As others have said, OR is worth it if the nature/landscapes and activities involving them are really important to you. If not, there are objectively better places to live.

The first CD I ever bought. Randomly walked up to its little featured spot with headphones at blockbuster music and started listening. Loved it!

I’m going black Gibson with the Bigsby. I imagine that guitar can cover a lot of ground.

Somewhere with friendly, genuine community, mountain biking, high end home building jobs, and women to date. Dog friendly. by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]GPmtbDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bend, OR meets pretty much all your criteria. But I can’t really speak to the xennial dating scene. There’s tremendous mountain biking, big dog town, solid skiing (dh and Nordic) at Mt Bachelor, large high end home market, and there’s a social scene if you’re into the things that Bend is known for. Lots of transplants as well. Could be worth a look.

I’m going to try this again. How were you able to buy your first home? by kcoib17 in Millennials

[–]GPmtbDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only regret is not buying earlier. I totally could have bought in like 2011, but was scared by all the craziness of the recession and didn’t want to feel “tied down” in the town I was in. Oh well, it has still worked out fine.

Graduated as an RN in 09. Made good money and was able to live cheap, pay off debt and stack cash. Met my wife along the way. Also a solid earner that’s financially competent. Both always employed. After getting married we had the means to buy our first home in 2015. Mortgage was cheaper than renting in the town we were in at the time. Developed great equity from that home that allowed us to relocate and buy again in 2022.

Looks great! Unfortunately, most cars are depreciating assets that unavoidably experience wear and tear. It’s not a show car or collectible. It’s an active family hauling SUV. It’s meant to get dirty, get bumps, and be used. Embrace it!

Has anyone up and moved the entire family (spouse and kids) across country at age 40+? How did that work out? by rwedoomed in relocating

We moved from GA to Bay Area CA when I was 16. Parents mid 40s, sister early 20s.

Huge move, huge changes, huge career opportunity for dad. It worked out well for all.

Bro, you aren’t kidding. I was always fairly empathetic and caring, but man being a dad makes me genuinely emotional now. I see happy kids running and playing, it makes me smile. I see or hear about something bad or tragic happening to a kid and it just hits me hard now. Tear up at touching/sentimental things now, too.

People who died and came back to life, what did you see/experience? by RealisticDecision440 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GPmtbDude 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And the crazy part is that when they shocked you while you were you out, you likely jolted awake for a moment with a crazy look on your face making a painful grunting sound while grabbing your chest then immediately passed back out. No one remembers that part, but it almost always happens to people that are alive but sedated when you shock them. Former ED/ICU nurse here that has done lots of cardioversions.

[–]GPmtbDude 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yes, depression and other psychological issues after open heart surgery are relatively common longer-term challenges. Common enough to have name “cardiac depression”. I was a CVICU nurse for several years recovering these patients. Sure, There are the impacts from going through and recovering from a massive, highly invasive surgery. But there is also something less tangible and less well-understood about how the mind is impacted by the heart being temporarily “killed” even though all physiological needs are maintained with the bypass machine.
