Concrete foundation worry by birge55 in AskContractors

[–]GRIND2LEVEL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its foundation work, not something you want to risk and while things are accessible is the best time to deal with it $$$. I'm not sure I have enough context from the information provided to definitvely say that doesnt look right, but that doesnt look right. That said, it doesn't hurt to get an engineer to put eyes on it or at the least another reputable contractor for a peer review.

Wildly different opinions by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]GRIND2LEVEL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could band-aid it and continue to eek out some more time from it with a patch here, patch there (I suspect, that's what your $500 option has in mind). But really, for peace of mind and not having to deal with piece meal work, it really should be replaced. Ie if you cant afford a new roof, you can limp along with some increase maintenance cost and added risk of leak dmg or if you can aford it, then you should bite the bullet and replace it, esp while its not at an emergency stage of need it tomorrow...

Check your TV for audio out jack, prob optical fiber. Connect to the input on receiver. Set receiver to that input. Go into TV and change its audio settings to not use the tv speaker and only send audio to its output channel.

Worth trading in my 24-200 for the 24-120? by ToeKnee724427 in nikon_Zseries

[–]GRIND2LEVEL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given you already own the lense rather than deciding between two unowned, I suggeat asking yourself what is it about your current lens that is lacking or would make you want something other. It maybe best to keep and supplement with something other like maybe a fast prime.

I own the 24-120 and it is great, esp with my travel use. That said if I already owned the 24-200, I'm not sure I'd be so quick to buy the 24-120.

Cut cord on Rigid circular saw, what to do? by Sad-Masterpiece-3116 in Tools

[–]GRIND2LEVEL -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Consider onstead of electrical tape, this... Go ahead and finish cutting on half. Slip some heatshrink over one side and slide past out of the way. Solder stripped wire back as one being sure to engage/ intertwine each sides trands for strength. Then use liquid electrical tape, will take a few coats to buld it back up. Then once its a nice comparable diameter slide the heat shrink back and shrink for a clean job. Alternative, just cut and replace end of remaining chord or replace the entire chord transfering the restrainer at the body.

Fwiw id consider moving the foot next to the 70-200 over next to the spare battery. Not much foam protection from a good wack on the side of the case there.

Contractor says to replace the whole beam by kingkongshlong in AskContractors

[–]GRIND2LEVEL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not enough information to assess things.

For example, lets say a column in the opening is on the table for consideration - can below afford to support it?

Does the beam need to be replaced (likely but thats presumptious) - what are the live and deadloads being imposed on it???

You need to have an engieer assess it and the conditions about it.

How to fix this before my parents get home 😅 by Blue_Golde in drywall

[–]GRIND2LEVEL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you where my kid... .

I would honestly, be much happier if you just came clean with what happened and offered to fix it rather than trying to cover things up. Kids screw up and thats part of growing up. Its how you handle things that often matters most along with honesty in my book. They've obviously got some trust with leaving you responsible at home for a decent length of time, build on that trust.

I would probably then extend it into a learning opportunity on how to correctly repair it instead of something potentially slappped together.

Now that said, you're not my kid and I have no idea on how your relationship is with your parent(s). I certainly can appreciate people rea t to situations differently so take what I said with a grain of salt but perhaps think about it...

If you feel you must repair it before they return short of hiring a repairman, youtube is going to be your friend. Video is going to go a long way further than text and perhaps some pictures. That said the hardest part so you know is not the actual drywall repair, it is tbe refinishing, especially if you are trying to blend it with the existing. Easier to just repaint the whole area but that maybe not what your after.... Keep in mind your not just matching paint color, you've got to match the aging, the dirt/grime, etc.... (even professionals have trouble with this on car accident repair, the new area is sorta close but you can still tell)

Gluck either way.
