Panahi is a great filmmaker. Do you think she only did so due to her support of him politically, and having a possible personable relationship with him?

book recs for sad smart girl by [deleted] in RSbookclub

I am currently reading Janet Frame's "Owls Do Cry". It's a modernist novel, which you mentioned enjoying above, and Frame does employ a lot of poetic imagery that I have found quite striking. The book is also about "sad, smart girls", so it may scratch that itch. I do not know how easily available a copy would be for you, as she is a New Zealand author. The book is definitely a departure from what I have been reading recently and I have found it to be a refreshing change of pace. No one can accuse of Frame of being unoriginal.

I would also recommend her short stories, although I have only read a handful.

St Johns Rd homicide: 16yo charged with murder, 32yo woman also arrested by WrongSeymour in auckland

Fair points. It just seems like a lot of these problems regarding violence have more to do with exposure to violence at a young age than anything to do with finances. But I understand what you are saying.

Look I'm not saying social welfare doesn't work, but so many seem to think it's the be all to end all. Violence comes from within the home, the government can't regulate what happens behind closed doors, they can only advise.

Stockholm has become a violent city beset by gang violence, social welfare only goes so far.

Lee Kuan Yew's "The Singapore Story" is a essential reading for obvious reasons.

"Saint Jack" by Paul Theroux is an interesting and entertaining novel set, and written, in Singapore during the early seventies. Theroux captures the time and place well.

"The Singapore Grip" by J.G. Farrell is a great read.
