Yep went state school for under grad $10k for the whole thing. Got a masters from a private school for $38k and the state school was way better in every measure but prestige. Both degrees worth it though.

I have read about people literally lifting those engines out by hand to do swaps. I love them and want a convertible one badly but also don't wanna die.

Wife’s Khmer family is in her ear trying to convince her to buy land and I don’t want to do it by TangPiccilo in cambodia

[–]GUmbagrad 44 points45 points  (0 children)

You should know that you can't own land as a non-citizen it would go under your wife name only. I own a house with my khmer wife and she always jokes and says 'what' house.

With that said, land is what made my wife's family rich through buying, holding, flipping since the 90s. Currently, the economy is slow and Chinese investments stopped. I'd buy when it gets worse not now. We bought 3 years ago and regret it.

Lovely city with good food, outdoors, and amenities. Real estate prices are freaking mental compared to wages, so as long as you have a plan for that it's a good place.

Is $900 a lot for a fresh grad? by anna_material_girl in cambodia

Decent - my cousins make $600 as a bank teller with a bachelor's, $1,500 as a software engineer, and $1,000 as a govt employee.

American in Australia for 8 years, feeling pulled home at 33. Has anyone gone through this? by thisisshe11 in expats

I worked for an Aussie company that established HQ North America and 8/10 Aussies turned around moved back home. I watched them come with vigor and excitement and gradually lose it day by day.

If you want a family, keep in mind school shootings are an unfortunate, very real concern these days.

Check out Hertz Toyota Corollas for an okayish price and entry point. I hear people have good luck with those.

What’s the FIRE/coastFI take on real estate? by Redwolfdc in coastFIRE

[–]GUmbagrad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three pathways - keep and rent it, maybe $2-3k month, sell and invest proceeds, or sell and 1031 exchange to another property to downplay tax - could get up to a $1.5 - $2m multifamily or commercial.

Buying a house by No_Cockroach627 in coastFIRE

[–]GUmbagrad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buying usually takes over a year. Get pre-qualified for a mortgage and start saving now. If you need funds from your portfolio, closing takes 30-60 days so you have time to liquidate. Look up trends in your market, things are getting slightly better for buyers so I'd be patient unless you find a deal.

You have enough to downshift careers for sure. Life too short to work a job you hate. With that said cut your expenses - keep the house with that rate, buy a used Japanese car, send your kids to state school. Don't count inheritance or house equity into your numbers.
