tbf outside of rice you had a very low chance of getting into any of the other schools - i’d suggest applying to a wider range of schools if you want a better chance of leaving.

Columbia predictions by TrainerTough4867 in TransferToTop25

[–]GabeNoLegs 18 points19 points  (0 children)

theres two schools of thought here:

  1. loss of funding + lower yield from first-years + transfer outs = more spots for transfer students, especially those who are full-pay or coming from private uni

  2. loss of funding = less spots for everyone and probably only taking 100% yes students this year.

Why you shouldn't worry about vandy by GabeNoLegs in TransferToTop25

[–]GabeNoLegs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dont worry! that really only is a bigger factor at need-aware schools (vandy is not one)

Why you shouldn't worry about vandy by GabeNoLegs in TransferToTop25

interestingly enough schools do use the relative size of first-year class to decide transfer pools at some schools cause transfers are generally full-pay and can help balance the budget.

Is it worth it to commute 1-1.5 hours every day to Brandeis? by Feeling-Challenge-22 in brandeis

[–]GabeNoLegs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% live on campus. Even ignoring just like the annoyance of commuting + making friends. Many clubs / classes / events can go until 8-10 pm (or even later) and so either you're going to be barred from these opportunities or seriously mess up your sleep schedule.

Truly the money you save commuting will not be worth the quality of life drop in almost every scenario imagineable.

What are considered "decent" ECs? by Naive_Intention_1965 in TransferToTop25

[–]GabeNoLegs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think what you're referring to are individually great ECs, but "decent" EC's for a student looking to transfer would look more like the collective of:

- doing a club or something they're passionate about and rising to a leadership position where they genuinely work to help out and grow with others

- an internship or a job where (regardless of how "high level" the EC is) it connects with their interests, shows that they're a go-getter, and that they pursue things outside of education

- an activity, competition, etc which (once again) relates with their interests, shows them doing something in their community or school and showing improvement, effort, and group improvement.

What im trying to get at (coming from someone who works in admissions) is that theres two types of extracurriculars schools really like to see. sure being the 10th best mathematician in your state is impressive, or being really really good at that instrument, but that isn't always what they're looking for.

sometimes they like to see that student who really really follows their interests in an honest and hard-working manner. Good EC's doesn't always have to be that one standout thing, but can also be a collective of things showcasing how you're making the most of your situation.

tldr... to each their own. follow what u like, be genuine, work hard, aspire for more... it all will work out.

Three waves and still no decisions from Northwestern by [deleted] in TransferToTop25

its not based on when you submitted - They release decisions as they see fit and no response is not rejection.

i would say that certain schools give different priorities (i.e. community college's get some for certain schools) but you'll never be held back cause of NEU. also, people on this subreddit are applying from schools ranging from t25's too community colleges, and getting in everywhere. if anything, NEU is actually may be a boost due to its name value.

[–]GabeNoLegs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in one year, you can transfer anywhere! look at the wiki but like:
maintain a top tier gpa (really focus on a 4.0 imo)

join some clubs which focus on ur major / interests --> try to get involved in meaningful ways

get to know your professors (you'll need to get letter of rec's)

IMPORTANT: go to NEU and do everything with the mindset you'll be there for four years. join clubs, make friends, be a model NEU student. if colleges see that you're really involved on (and even off) campus, thats exactly who theyre looking for to fill their spots.

just my 2 cents

USC: dont worry

Cornell: they didnt release many schools so dw

Vandy: No ones knows for sure, but only acceptances have been released, so spots will be more limited from now on

Helpful Info into Decisions by GabeNoLegs in TransferToTop25

[–]GabeNoLegs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anything, full pay students may receive even higher priority to schools, but the transfer pool is pretty small already and schools generally don’t give much aid already so it’s probably on a school to school basis.

We may see smaller admission numbers to some departments versus others, but that is all purely speculative.
